SINGAPORE, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met here Wednesday evening with Singaporean President S. R. Nathan, with both exchanging views on further developing bilateral ties between the two countries.     President Hu said that as the two countries are to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year, China is ready to provide Singapore with a pair of pandas for joint research in a bid to further enhance the friendly feelings between the people of the two countries. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Profits of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) administered by the central government more than doubled in October from a year ago after months of declines, a senior official said here on Friday.     The 132 central SOEs reaped a profit of 79.5 billion yuan (11.64 billion U.S. dollars) in October, up 151 percent year on year, said Huang Shuhe, deputy director of the State-owed Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) at the 2009 Annual CEO Forum.     In October, revenues surged by 22 percent from a year ago to nearly 1.16 trillion yuan, Huang said.     Their profits during Jan-Oct was 633.8 billion yuan, while revenues amounted to 9.83 trillion yuan during the same period.     Huang also noted 24 central SOEs had entered the rank of Fortune 500 companies.     "China's companies still face difficulties and great challenges due to roaring raw material prices, huge environmental pressure and rampant protectionism triggered by the financial crisis," he said.     He said the companies should further enhance independent innovation, improve corporate governance and accelerate the pace of "go global" to compete with foreign brands.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua)-- The United States welcomes the peaceful development of cross-Straits ties and "more positive and stable" cross-Straits relations, said a China-US Joint Statement issued here Tuesday.     The statement said that both sides underscored the importance of the Taiwan issue in China-US relations.     The Chinese side emphasized that the Taiwan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and expressed the hope that the US side will honor its relevant commitments and appreciate and support the Chinese side's position on this issue.     The US side stated that the United States follows its one-China policy and abides by the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiques, said the statement.     The two sides reiterated that "the fundamental principle of respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity is at the core of the three Sino-US joint communiques which guide China-US relations. Neither side supports any attempts by any force to undermine this principle," said the statement.     The two sides agreed that respecting each other's core interests is extremely important to ensure steady progress in China-US relations.     Both countries believe that to nurture and deepen bilateral strategic trust is essential to China-US relations in the new era.     The US side reiterated that it welcomes a strong, prosperous and successful China that plays a greater role in world affairs.     The two sides are of the view that in the 21st century, global challenges are growing, countries are more interdependent, and theneed for peace, development and cooperation is increasing. BEIJING, Dec. 1 -- Premier Wen Jiabao Monday rejected "unfair" calls from European countries for faster reform of China's currency policies, despite lobbying from EU financial chiefs at the weekend."Some countries demand the yuan's appreciation while practicing various trade protectionism against China. It's unfair and actually limits China's development," Wen told reporters in Nanjing, Jiangsu province.     European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, were also at the press conference. We will work with our Taiwan counterparts to make sure the agreements are implemented and to close loopholes in them." Chen said.     Chiang Pin-kun said Taiwan and mainland must jointly tackle economic challenges, and the establishment of a cross-Strait economic framework should not be delayed.     He called on both sides to contribute to economic prosperity and development as well as long-term peace and stability.     The agreements reached at previous meetings between SEF and ARATS had brought substantial benefits for the normalization of cross-Strait communication and benefited people on both sides, he said.     However, there was room for improvement and both sides needed to carry out further negotiations, he said.     He called for both sides across the Taiwan Strait to continue efforts to push for the development of systematic talks and promote cross-Strait communication and cooperation.     The ARATS and SEF are expected to discuss future negotiations on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), although talks on the agreement were not on the agenda of this meeting.     The two sides reached a basic consensus on avoiding double taxation and strengthening taxation cooperation in a preparatory meeting Monday afternoon.
