Mark Aitchison Young, governor of the colony between 1941 and 1947, made a proposal aimed at political reform in Hong Kong in 1946. He called for establishment of a municipal council comprising a majority elected from among the public at large. The proposal was shelved in 1952 under the governance of Young's successor, Alexander Grantham.
Marking the 40th anniversary of its reform and opening-up in 2018, China outlined a new policy during the annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia earlier this year to highlight more measures for free trade and investment, such as lower tariffs for automobiles and other imports.

Mawston said the iPhone has been struggling in China for the past three years after major carriers like China Telecom reduced their subsidy programs for 4G smartphones. "De-subsidization has made the iPhone look much more expensive at the point of sale in China, causing iPhone demand to crash," he said.
