BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- In an unexceptional courtyard on the street behind Jingshan Hill in central Beijing, two Chinese pines stand side by side.     This was the residence of Zhuo Lin, widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping. On Wednesday, she passed away, aged 93. Deng was also 93 when he died 12 years ago.     To complete the last trip with her beloved husband, Zhuo chose to have her ashes scattered at sea as her husband's were. BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's economy would continue to recover from the world financial crisis in the latter half and expand at the rate of 8.5 percent for the whole year, said a report from the Bank of Communications on Sunday.     The country's economic development was expected to accelerate the pace and expand at 9 percent in the third quarter and 9.8 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the report.     The report indicated that the country would achieve the set goal of 8 percent economic growth for the full year, contributed by a robust domestic investment and consumption.     In the latter half, investment would represent fast increase, boosted by development from infrastructure construction, real estate, and the industrial sector, said the report.     China saw its economy growth slowed down amid the world financial crisis. Its gross domestic product grew 7.9 percent in the second quarter after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first three months.

BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leaders on Sunday attended a concert of a renowned Chinese singer to commemorate the 70th anniversary of her participation into the country's revolutionary artistic cause.     Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun and He Guoqiang, all members of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, attended the concert performed by Wang Kun and her students.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent a congratulatory letter to the show, which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.     Wang Kun, born in 1925, was the protagonist in the opera of the White-Haired Girl, a household legend describing the sufferings by local farmers under the exploitation of landlords before 1949.

BEIJING, Oct.17 (Xinhua) -- China's civil aviation industry made profits of 9.1 billion yuan (about 1.33 billions U.S. dollars) in the first nine months of 2009, despite the punch by the financial crisis on the world's civil aviation industry, said the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on Saturday.     Domestic air passenger traffic volume grew by 23.6 percent from a year earlier in first nine months of this year.     Performance of small airports, those that handle less than 1 million passengers annually, were most inspiring, said Li Jiaxiang, director with the CAAC, at the 2009 China International General Aviation Convention held in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Saturday.     Li said that passenger volume of small airports grew 26.7 percent year on year to 14.87 million in the first half.     He contributed the vibrant performance of small airports and regional air routes to the more balanced economic development of China's different regions in recent years, which was the result of the country's strategies to develop the relatively poor western and central regions and to revive the old industrial base in northeastern regions.     Besides, the fact that Chinese people are becoming richer and CAAC's policies carried out last year to subsidize small and medium-sized airports and regional air routes also helped the passenger volume rise of small airports, said Li.     By the end of 2008, China had 116 small airports, accounting for 73 percent of the total number of the country's airports.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's railways carried 60.75 million passengers nationwide around the seven days of National Day holidays and one day of Mid-Autumn Festival, the Ministry of Railways said on Friday.     The figure was 2.18 million more or 3.7 percent up from the same period last year, according to the ministry.     The peak transport season lasted for eleven days from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8. Passengers queue to receive security check at the subway station entrance of Beijing Railway Station in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 7, 2009. As the National Day holidays are about to end, the railway transportation witnessed a travel peak all over the nation. China's railways carried a record high of 6.93 million people nationwide on Oct. 1, the National Day. The previous record was set on Oct. 5 in 2008 when China's railways carried 6.48 million passengers.     This year, China's National Day holidays and the Mid-Autumn Festival, a key festival in China for family re-union, overlapped. More people working far away from home chose to go back for family re-union in the eight-day holidays.

PLOEN, Germany, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The emissions cut target proposed by developed countries is "unfair" to developing countries, a Chinese expert said Friday.     Pan Jiahua, executive director of the research centre for sustainable development of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, made the statement in an interview with Xinhua at the Global Economic Symposium (GES 2009) held in Ploen Castle, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.     Developed countries have proposed that the world should cut CO2emissions by 50 percent by 2050, with industrialized countries reducing their emissions by 80 percent.     "An 80 percent emissions cut sounds good, when you first hear it. It shows a high profile by developed countries in dealing with climate change", said Pan. However, if developing countries accepted this target, there would be "nearly no space" left for further development in these countries.     "At present, the annual per capita CO2 emission of developed countries is 15 tons. By 2050, if 80 percent were cut, the figure will be lowered to 3 tons," Pan said. "The current annual per capita CO2 emissions of developing countries does not reach 3 tons."     "Developing countries have to cut emissions by at least 20 percent from the current level to 2.5 tons to reach the proposed target of a 50 percent decrease worldwide. That means, by 2050, the annual per capita CO2 emissions of developing countries will still be lower than developed countries."     However, at present, most of developing countries were still undergoing industrialization and urbanization and more infrustructure construction was needed, which meant they had to increase CO2 emissions to keep their development at this stage, Pan said.     Developed countries had already passed that period and they could keep regular development with a lower CO2 emission, Pan added.     So they should take more responsibility in this respect, said Pan, noting that the proposal would seriously damage the development of developing countries.     GES was first held in Ploen, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany in 2008. It aims to identify global challenges, examine their policy and business implications, and formulate concrete actions in response.     GES 2009 attracted 351 politicians and experts from all over the world with its main topics including world financial regulation, climate change and global trade.

FRANKFURT, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- China hopes for early resumption of the international talks on Iranian nuclear issue, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said in Frankfurt on Wednesday.     He made the remarks when he attended the six-nation meeting on the Iranian nuclear issue in Frankfurt. Vice foreign ministers from UN Security Council's five permanent members -- the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France, plus Germany met in Frankfurt on Wednesday, aiming to explore the solutions to tackle the thorny issue one day after Tehran said it would table a new package of proposals on the issue.     China welcomes Iran's "positive remarks" on seeking dialogue and negotiation on the nuclear issue, He was quoted as saying by a press release issued by the Chinese delegation, adding that China also appreciates the progress of the cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).     Last week, the IAEA, a UN nuclear watchdog, issued a report saying Iran has slowed production of enriched uranium and agreed to tighter monitoring of its enrichment plant.     The Chinese vice minister said China hopes that various sides to take advantage of the current favorable chances and to exert more diplomatic efforts to resume the international talks on the issue as soon as possible, so as to seek a comprehensive and long-term solution for the issue.     According to Chinese diplomats, Mr. He also met his Russian and U.S. counterparts Sergy Ryabkov and Nicholas Burns at the intervals of the meeting, exchanging views on the Iranian nuclear issue and other international issues of common concern.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Fifty-two types of new weapon systems developed with China's own technologies, including airborne early warning and control (AEWC) aircraft, will be showcased at the military parade celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China.     Further cutting-edge weaponry would include sophisticated radar, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and satellite communication devices of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Lieutenant General Fang Fenghui, general director of the parade, told Xinhua Wednesday.     The Oct. 1 parade would also show personnel and equipment from the navy, air force and China's ballistic missile corps, Fang said.     Fang did not identify the specific models of the weapon systems but said all of the weapons are tagged: "Made in China".     "They (the weapon systems) embody the ongoing transformation of the PLA from a labor-intensive force to technology-intensive might be capable of joint operations in modern warfare," said Fang, who is also commander of the PLA's Beijing Military Area Command.     "The weapon systems to be shown in the parade also showcase the ability of the PLA to carry out diverse military missions," he said.     There will be 56 regiments on the ground and in the air during the parade, symbolizing the country's 56 ethnic groups marching along the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics in solidarity, Fang said.     Fourteen of the regiments will march through Chang'an Avenue on foot, 30 in wheeled transport and 12 will take to the air.     All the troops in the parade will be dressed in PLA 07-type uniforms and most of them are from generations born in the 1980s and 1990s.     Compared with the previous military parade on National Day 10 years ago, this one would have less troops and equipment but increased high-tech weaponry and special force units, Fang said.
