BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- In an unexceptional courtyard on the street behind Jingshan Hill in central Beijing, two Chinese pines stand side by side.     This was the residence of Zhuo Lin, widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping. On Wednesday, she passed away, aged 93. Deng was also 93 when he died 12 years ago.     To complete the last trip with her beloved husband, Zhuo chose to have her ashes scattered at sea as her husband's were. Zhuo Lin, a former consultant of the Central Military Commission General Office and widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping, died of illness at 12:30 p.m. July 29 after medical treatment failed in Beijing, at the age of 93.Deng Xianqun, Deng's younger sister, recalled how Deng and Zhuo used to have a tacit understanding between each other.     "My big brother didn't love talking, but my sister-in-law was just the opposite," she said.     According to their children, Zhuo had taken care of all the details of Deng's life, including what to wear and how many sleeping pills he should take.     In 1966, when the political storms swept Deng from power as Chinese vice premier, Zhuo was bewildered, wondering what had happened exactly and what the future would hold.     But she chose to trust him and be with him.     "I've been with him for so long that I'm certain he's an upright man," she told their daughter, Deng Nan.     In 1969, Deng was exiled to eastern Jiangxi Province to work on farms.     Deng Lin, their eldest daughter, said Zhuo often spoke of the days in Jiangxi when they dug the land, pulled weeds and spread manure.     "Mother mostly did easy work, like cooking, as she was not very healthy," Deng Lin said.

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have confiscated close to 53,000 guns by the end of August in a nationwide crackdown started in March this year, and 9,849 suspects involved in gun-related crimes were punished, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Thursday.     The ministry started the special crackdown on explosives and gun-related crimes in March, and said it would continue till China's Oct. 1 National Day celebration.     The crackdown is part of the ministry's campaign to maintain public stability, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Police also confiscated more than 2 million bullets and 120,000imitation guns, the ministry said.     About 12 percent of all guns confiscated were seized in the southern Hainan Province, while about 17 percent of the confiscated bullets came from the central Henan Province, the ministry said.     The southern province of Guangdong seized 34,690 imitation guns, which took up one fourth of the total.     Meanwhile, the MPS urged that efforts to crack down on gun-related crime must not be relaxed yet. Police forces should mobilize the public to report to the ministry if they have information about gun-related crimes, the ministry said on its website.     About 60 percent of the guns confiscated by the police were handed in by the public voluntarily, the ministry said.

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's insurance capital investments hit 2.45 trillion yuan (358 billion U.S. dollars) in the first seven months of this year, according to the country's insurance regulator.     In July alone, the investments from insurance funds stood at 120.4 billion yuan, China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) said in a report on its website.     Of the total insurance investment value, about 332 billion yuan, or 9.8 percent, went to the stock markets by the end of the second quarter of this year.     During the same period, mutual funds investments suck 228.45 billion yuan, or 6.8 percent from the insurance capital.     A booming equities market and an optimistic attitude towards the country's stock markets had led to an increasing investments, said the CIRC.     Comparatively, in the first seven months, bank deposit of China's insurance capital decreased to 1.03 trillion yuan, 15.23 billion yuan less than in the first six months.     The CIRC's statistics also reflected a slowdown increasing rate in premium income in the first seven months. Premium income was 678.64 billion yuan, representing a small increase of 80 billion yuan than the June figure.

TAIPEI, Aug.15 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Morakot has killed at least 124 people and left 56 missing in Taiwan as of 10 p.m. Saturday, according to local disaster response authorities. Another 45 people were injured after the typhoon, the worst on the island in nearly five decades, wreaked havoc across central and southern regions.     Sixty-six people died in Kaohsiung, 25 in Tainan, 16 in Pingdong, six in Chiayi, seven in Nantou, three in Changhua and one in Yunlin.     Nearly 23,700 people have been evacuated, and almost 5,000 are taking refuge in 170 sheltering camps.     Morakot has caused more than 12 billion New Taiwan Dollars (365million U.S. dollars) in damages to agriculture and forestry. Among the worst-hit regions are Pingdong, Kaohsiung and Tainan.     People from a wide range of social sectors in Taiwan have donated cash and materials worth millions of New Taiwan Dollars to support the disaster-relief work. BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for efforts to intensify energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental protection to ensure clean, safe and sustainable development.     Li made the comment at a meeting in Beijing on Tuesday, urging efforts on development of green industry and sustainable economy.     He said environmental protection should be strengthened as the environmental problems in China are still severe, such as the water, air and soil pollution.     Li said China's economy is still at a critical moment as it begins to recover steadily. BRUSSELS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met Thursday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on bilateral ties, vowing to enhance cooperation between the two sides.     Xi, who congratulated Barroso for his reelection, said China appreciated his efforts in the past five years on boosting development of the comprehensive and strategic partnership between China and the European Union. China believes, too, that the bilateral ties would advance further in a healthy and stable way within the new term of Barroso, Xi said.     Xi said China and the EU, who have formed a pattern of comprehensive, wide-range and multilevel cooperation, have become two important forces to help shape the future international structure into a multipolar world.     Xi put forward a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral relations between China and the EU. The Sino-EU relations will remove various obstacles and make progress as long as both sides stick to the principle of "mutual respect and mutual trust, consultation on an equal footing, and seeking common ground while shelving differences," Xi said. It will also be important to bear in mind the overall interests of bilateral relations and respect each other's major concerns, Xi said.     China is ready to work with the EU to build Sino-EU relations into a model of peaceful coexistence and friendly exchanges between countries that transcend civilizations, social systems and development models, Xi said.     Barroso offered congratulations on the success of China's impressive National Day celebrations on October 1, speaking highly of the great achievements of China in the last 60 years.     Sino-EU relations have seen remarkable achievements, he said, adding that the past five years have witnessed frequent top-level exchanges, fruitful personnel and cultural exchanges, and rapid development of economic and trade cooperation.     China and the EU have seen increasing common ground on global issues, including the international financial crisis and climate change, and both sides oppose protectionism and champion a just international order, Barroso said.     In the next five years, the EU will continue developing and promoting the EU and China's comprehensive and strategic partnership and strive to handle disagreements in a mature and responsible spirit so as to further develop bilateral ties, he said.     Barroso also wished the forthcoming Europalia Chinese Art Festival a great success.     Xi arrived here Wednesday for an official visit to Belgium, the first leg of his five-nation European tour. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- As typhoon Morakot gains momentum and churns toward China's mainland, provinces in coastal regions are busy bracing for its impact.     By 5 p.m. Thursday, the typhoon was located at 23.3 degrees north and 126.7 degrees east, about 780 kilometers away from Wenzhou, a major city in Zhejiang Province, meteorological authorities said. It was expected to land in the eastern Zhejiang or Fujian provinces between Saturday noon and Sunday morning. "As a result, the route of Morakot is not fully predictable."     He warned Morakot was likely to continue growing in strength and become a super typhoon.     China is frequently affected by tropical storms in summer. The most destructive one recently occurred in 2006, when super typhoon Saomai claimed more than 400 lives.

Larger ones or those with delicate packing are too much for me," says Zhang.     For some, they would rather give uneatable "cakes" to their friends.     E-moon cakes are becoming popular among Chinese Internet users.     "Such a moon cake carries as much affection as the traditional edible cakes to my friends, as I have made it with my own hand," said Wang Yue, a student at Shandong University in east China's Jinan City.     An e-moon cake also requires a process of stuffing, baking and packing, but those are done with clicks of the mouse.     There are still people, however, who keep their faith to the traditional flavor of the festival food.     Every day since mid September, Li Shifu has been seeing long queues in front of his bakery in Hohhot.     People queued to wait for Li's moon cakes, which they said were simple but delicious.     Li, his wife and three employees have been busy making moon cakes for more than half a month, and sometimes they can not rest until midnight.

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's securities authority Thursday began reviewing applications of the the first seven IPOs for listing on the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), a Nasdaq-style market in China.     The seven enterprises covered fields of software, medical equipment and medicines. They planned to raise 2.27 billion yuan (332.65 million U.S. dollars).     The review meeting was for the first time opened to journalists, who were allowed to watch the meeting for about ten minutes.     The second batch of IPOs will be reviewed Friday and they plan to raise 1.13 billion yuan (165.30 million U.S. dollars), according to a report on the website of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).     IPO review meetings would be concentrated on these days, a CSRC official, who declined to be named, told Xinhua Monday.     "IPO applications sent to the regulator were concentrated. The regulator had to take into consideration forming a block and guard against speculation that might push up IPO stocks prices," the official said.     The CSRC started to accept applications of the GEM on July 26 and had received 155 applications for IPOs on the GEM as of Sept. 10. The CSRC has formally agreed to handle 149 enterprises' applications that aim to raise 33.61 billion yuan (4.92 billion U.S. dollars).

ROME, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China and EU agreed here Sunday to continue their dialogue in order to strengthen the important cooperation with each other.     Hua Jianmin, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), or China's legislature, met with President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek in Rome, before attending a summit for parliament speakers of the Group of Eight (G8) and emerging economies on behalf of top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo.
