BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Tuesday that he and U.S. President Barack Obama had agreed to improve Sino-U.S. relations and reached consensus on major international and regional issues of common concern. After nearly two hours of talks, Hu told the press at Beijing's Great Hall of the People that his talks with Obama was "candid, constructive and fruitful."     Standing beside Obama, Hu said China and the United States shared broad common interests and have great potential for future development on a series of major issues concerning peace and development of the mankind. "Such a commitment serves the common interests of China and the United States and all other parties concerned."     Hu said China and the United States would work with other parties concerned to stick to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the six-party talks process to safeguard peace and stability of the northeast Asia.     The two presidents stressed that it was very important for the stability in the Middle East and the Gulf Region to uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and properly resolve the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiation, Hu said.     ONE-CHINA POLICY     Hu said the key to Sino-U.S. relationship was to mutually respect and accommodate each other's core interests and major concerns while divergences from different national conditions were normal as the two sides had different country situations.     He said that China appreciated President Obama's support for the one-China policy and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, and his respect for China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Taiwan issue and other matters.     Hu said the two sides had reaffirmed the "cardinal principle" of "mutually respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity" and voiced opposition to any attempt by any force to violate this principle.     "We have both agreed to conduct dialogues and exchanges on issues including human rights and religion, in the spirit of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, so as to boost understanding, mitigate divergences and broaden consensus," Hu said.     "The Sino-U.S. relationship is very important. Maintaining and promoting the Sino-U.S. relationship is a shared responsibility of both sides," Hu said.     "China is ready to work together with the United States to push forward the continuous, healthy and stable development of the Sino-U.S. relationship to better serve the two countries' peoples and peoples across the world," Hu said.

U.S. President Barack Obama has also stressed on several occasions that U.S.-China relations would shape the 21st century.     Compared to the past, the current China-U.S. relations have shown new characteristics.     Bilateral communication has been expanded geographically against the backdrop of globalization, and the contacts involving China and the United States occur everyday at almost every corner of the world, not just between the two countries.     Moreover, the content of the China-U.S. communication has been expanded to every area, including politics, economy, military, culture and environmental protection, which is not limited to a certain field.     It's worth noticing that after entering the 21st century, the relationship between China and the United States has been increasingly intertwined with global issues, and the two nations have to face various global challenges together, not just problems of their own.     "The major challenges of the 21st century, from climate change to nuclear proliferation to economic recovery, are challenges that touch both our nations and challenges that neither of our nations can solve by acting alone," Obama said in Beijing after meeting the Chinese president on Tuesday.     As the China-U.S. Joint Statement issued after the meeting of the two leaders pointed out, under the circumstance of the international situation undergoing profound and complex changes, China and the United States have common responsibilities on regional and global security issues.     China-U.S. relations, the relationship of the world's largest developing and developed countries, reflect a new character along the evolution of world structure in this new century, that is, developing countries have been gaining more say and influence in the world, with their status on the international political and economic stage becoming more important.     In a changing world, the trend of China-U.S. ties has impact on the well-being of the future world.     Through Obama's Asia tour and his first visit to China, it is easy to see that cooperation between China and the United States will not only benefit the two countries and the two peoples, but also conduce to peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole. Such consensus has been reached by the leaders of the two countries.     Obama described China as both an important partner and a friendly competitor, saying the United States seeks cooperation, instead of confrontation, with China. He said the United States does not intend to contain China's rise and that he welcomes China as a "strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."     It is on the basis of such consensus that Obama's China visit turned to be fruitful. The two countries reaffirmed the new definition of their ties -- a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century -- as established by their heads of state, and enriched their relations and cooperation with more strategic connotation.     The cooperation between China and the United States is indispensable for the world's development. It is presumable that the two countries' interests are to further intertwine and bilateral cooperation is to make continuous progress. However, the two sides must soberly deal with differences and contradictions at the same time.     Just as President Hu said, "it is normal for China and the United States to have some discrepancies since the conditions in the two countries are different, yet the most critical part lies in the respect of common interests and major concerns."     According to Hu, for an enhanced China-U.S. relationship, it is primarily necessary to establish strategic mutual trust, and politicians of the two countries are required to "have enough strategic insight and political wisdom" and to make joint efforts, improve understanding, expand cooperation and deal properly with discrepancies so as to push China-U.S. ties onto a new level.     "The Chinese side is willing to work with the U.S. side to push for the sustained, sound and stable development of China-U.S. ties so as to better benefit the peoples of the two countries and the world as well." BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said here Thursday the peaceful and safe use of nuclear energy requires joint efforts of the international community. Li made the remarks when meeting with heads of some of the delegations attending the third meeting of ministerial level officials of the executive committee of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership(GNEP) in Beijing.     Li said China is ready to deepen international cooperation in this respect by promoting mutual benefit and win-win of all parties. BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao brought hope and confidence to the world in its fight against climate change by attending the summit of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Saturday.Yang, who had accompanied Wen during his visit on Thursday and Friday, said climate change profoundly affected mankind's existence and development, imposed a critical challenge to the world, and should be tackled by all countries jointly.     The Copenhagen conference was an important opportunity to boost international cooperation in combating climate change, Yang said.     Under the joint efforts of all parties, the conference yielded significant and positive fruits in three aspects, he said.     First, it firmly upheld the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" set by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.     Second, it made a solid step forward in promoting developed countries' binding emissions cuts and developing countries' voluntary mitigation actions.     Third, it produced important consensus on the key issues of long-term global emissions cut targets, funding and technology support to developing countries, and transparency.     Yang said Premier Wen's attendance at the summit showed the Chinese government took a highly responsible attitude toward the Chinese people, all peoples in the world and mankind's future.     Over the last two days, Wen delivered an important speech to the summit, kept close contact with many parties, communicated and coordinated with them, overcame various difficulties, and guided action according to situation. He adopted a principled but flexible attitude, broke his back to move the climate talks forward on the right track, and played a pivotal role in the climate talks.     Wen's attendance contributed to the global fight against climate change mainly in three fields, Yang said.     FIRST, ABIDING BY PRINCIPLES, MAINTAINING A FOUNDATION FOR COOPERATION     Yang said developing and developed countries were very different in their historical emissions responsibilities and current emissions levels, and in their basic national characteristics and development stages, therefore they should shoulder different responsibilities and obligations in fighting climate change.     According to Yang, Wen told the conference the international community must adhere to the following four principles to combat climate change.     First, maintaining the consistency of outcomes:     The outcome of this conference must stick to rather than obscure the basic principles enshrined in the Convention and the Protocol. It must follow rather than deviate from the mandate of the "Bali Roadmap." It should lock up rather than deny the consensus and progress already achieved in the negotiations.     Second, upholding the fairness of rules:     The principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" represents the core and bedrock of international cooperation on climate change and it must never be compromised. Developed countries must take the lead in making deep quantified emission cuts and provide financial and technological support to developing countries. Developing countries should, with the financial and technological support of developed countries, do what they can to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change in the light of their national conditions.     Third, paying attention to the practicality of the targets:     In tackling climate change, the world needed to take a long-term perspective, but more importantly, focus on the present. It was important to focus on achieving near-term and mid-term reduction targets, honoring the commitments already made and taking real action. One action was more useful than a dozen programs. The conference should give people hope by taking credible actions.     Fourth, ensure the effectiveness of institutions and mechanisms:     The international community should make concrete and effective institutional arrangements under the Convention to have developed countries honor their commitments, provide sustained and sufficient financial support to developing countries, speed up the transfer of climate-friendly technologies and effectively help developing countries strengthen their capacity in combating climate change.     Yang said Wen's propositions reflected developing countries' common stance. The propositions were reasonable and lawful, based on the present, faced the future, addressed all parties' interests, pointed out the direction for the climate conference when it was at the crossroads, effectively kept and boosted the talks, and won wide support and praise.

ASHGABAT, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Central Asia has been fruitful, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Monday.     Hu has reached broad consensus with leaders of Central Asian countries on strengthening political mutual trust, deepening practical cooperation, and promoting communication and coordination in multilateral organizations, Yang told reporters.      CHINA-KAZAKHSTAN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP PROMOTED Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) meets with Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev in Astana Dec. 12, 2009. BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Beijing saw smooth flow of traffic Monday, the first workday of 2010, after a snow storm Sunday caused traffic breakdown in the national capital.     The city's bus and subway services went smoothly on Monday, with no gridlock and serious traffic accidents reported, according to the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau.     During the peak hours on Monday morning, the Beijing Subway Operating Company dispatched 20 additional subway trains to ease the passenger flow.     The early bus of all routes started off on time in the morning, according to the Beijing Public Transport Holdings.     Most of the bus services ran smoothly, while only 19 lines leading suburban mountainous areas were suspended, it said.     From 9:00 p.m. Saturday to 8:00 a.m. Monday, more than 20,000 sanitation workers were dispatched to clean the snow in the city's main roads with 15,710 tonnes of snow-dissolving agent, said Zhang Zhiqiang, an official with the Beijing Environmental Sanitation Group Co., Ltd.     By 9:00 a.m., all expressways in Beijing reopened to traffic, while some national and municipal highways were shut down due to the slippery road conditions.     The vehicle flow in Beijing was reduced Monday after authorities announced on Sunday that classes in primary and middle schools would be suspended on Monday, and urged institutions and companies to stagger their work time.     However, transportation in eastern Shandong Province and northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was seriously affected by the heavy snow.     By 9:30 a.m. Monday, many expressways in Shangdong were closed and 19 flights cancelled in the Yantai International Airport.     In Inner Mongolia, 13 trains were delayed Monday in Hohhot, the regional capital, said the Hohhot railway authorities.     The No. 1820 train, carrying more than 800 passengers, started off at 5:10 p.m. after being stranded for 12 hours, they said.
