RIYADH, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz here Tuesday on deepening the two countries' friendship and cooperation.     Hu arrived here earlier in the day at the start of his "journey of friendship and cooperation" to Saudi Arabia and four African countries.     In a written statement issued upon his arrival, Hu said he would exchange views with the king on China-Saudi Arabia ties and global and regional issues of common concern, including ways of addressing the international financial crisis.     Since China and Saudi Arabia established diplomatic ties in 1990, bilateral relations have developed steadily, with increasing exchange of visits at different levels and expanding cooperation in various sectors. In 2008, two-way trade between China and Saudi Arabia amounted to 41.8 billion U.S. dollars.     During the visit, President Hu will also meet Abdul Rahman Al-Attiya, secretary general of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), to discuss cooperation between China and GCC member countries.     From Riyadh, Hu will travel on to Mali, Senegal, Tanzania and Mauritius.     Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters last week that Hu's visit was aimed at further strengthening China's friendship and cooperation with these countries.     "It is believed that the visit will promote the in-depth development of China-Saudi Arabia strategic friendly relations and China-Africa new strategic partnership and further consolidate the China-Africa traditional friendship," said Jiang. 

BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) -- China's industry and commerce authorities said Friday that the number of businesses established in China rose only 0.78 percent year-on-year in 2008, much slower than an average of 5 percent growth in recent 5 years.     As of the end of 2008, the number of businesses totaled 9.71 million, up 0.78 percent, or 74,900, over the same period in 2007,the State Administration For Industry and Commerce (SAIC) said.     Private sectors and foreign-funded companies remained stable growth despite the global financial crisis. By the end of 2008, the number of private businesses stood at 6.57 million, up 9 percent, or 543,700.     The number of foreign-funded companies rose 7 percent to 434,900 last year, with total investment exceeding 2.32 trillion U.S. dollars, up 10.21 percent year-on-year.     The total registered capital of all businesses rose 12.42 percent to 43.48 trillion yuan (6.35 trillion U.S. dollars), the SAIC said.     The statistics also showed that more companies had been established in the western and central areas as the country tried to transit more industries to the regions, while the number of companies fell in more-developed eastern region due to the financial crisis.

WUHAN, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called for realizing healthy and rapid economic growth through technical innovation and industrial upgrading during a visit to the country's central regions.     More government support should go to high technology industries such as electronic information, software service and bio-medicines, Wen said during a visit to enterprises in Hubei Province from Sunday to Tuesday. BAMAKO, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday vowed to increase aid to African countries, cancel part of their debts, and expand trade with and investment in these countries.     Hu made the statement while meeting with his Malian counterpart Amadou Toumany Toure.     Hu, making his first visit to this western African nation, was accorded a 21-gun salute in a welcome ceremony before the two presidents started talks.     This is Hu's second African tour since the landmark China-Africa summit in 2006 when Hu announced eight measures to promote ties with Africa, including massive tariff cuts and debt exemptions for scores of African countries, and doubling aid to Africa over a three-year period.     In the past two years, China has increased aid to African countries, eliminated tariff for goods from some least developed African nations, and cancelled parts of the debts owed by African countries, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun said days ahead of Hu's visit. Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) meets with Malian President Amadou Toumany Toure in Bamako, Mali, on Feb. 12, 2009    Trade between China and African countries increased to 106.8 billion U.S. dollars last year from just under 40 billion dollars in 2005, according to the Chinese Commerce Ministry.     Hu said that as the world financial crisis has posed severe challenges, it is of greater significance to step up China-Africa solidarity and cooperation.     "China is paying much attention to African countries' difficulties and concerns as the global financial crisis has begun to take a toll on Africa," Hu said.     "We would like to increase communication and exchanges with Mali and other African countries so that together we will tide over the crisis," Hu said.     On China-Mali ties, Hu said the two countries will usher in a new era of development as next year marks the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.     Hu hailed the past 49 years of friendship as a "paradigm of south-south cooperation" and described the two nations as "good friends, partners and brothers."     To boost bilateral relations, Hu proposed that both nations keep high-level visits and increase exchanges between their governments, parliaments, militaries and non-governmental organizations.     On economic ties, Hu proposed that both sides step up coordination and carry out government-to-government cooperative programs.     Furthermore, the Chinese government would like to encourage and support Chinese businesses with strong capacities to invest in Mali, he said.     Hu called for the two countries to work more closely in telecommunications, agriculture, and infrastructure construction among others.     He also suggested setting up a bilateral trade and technology steering committee so as to plan and coordinate cooperative programs.     China welcomes Mali to showcase its civilization and arts in the 2010 Shanghai Expo, Hu said.     Hu also pledged to continue to offer help in personnel training and provide Mali with medicines and equipment to fight malaria.     On international affairs, Hu said China will urge the international community to pay greater attention to Africa's development and help the continent attain the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.     On his part, President Toure said his people cherished their friendship with China, which is sincere, consistent and durable.     Toure also appreciated China's long-term assistance for his country, which he said played an important role in promoting Mali's economic and social development and improving people's livelihood.     Looking to the future, Toure said his country will strengthen solidarity and friendly cooperation with China.     He said that Mali will, as always, adhere to the one-China policy.     Following their talks, the two leaders signed cooperative deals and gave a briefing to the media.     During his two-day stay in Bamako, Hu will meet with President of the Malian National Assembly Dioncounda Traore.     Hu is also scheduled to attend the inauguration of a China bridge construction aid project in Bamako and the opening ceremony of a China-aided anti-malaria center, and meet Chinese medical workers in Mali.     From Mali, Hu will travel to the three African countries of Senegal, Tanzania and Mauritius.

BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for strengthened coordination among different nations on economic polices and joint efforts against trade and investment protectionism to help the world economy recover.     The international community as a whole was severely challenged in the course of tackling the global financial crisis and resuming growth in the world economy, Hu told Xinhua on Tuesday ahead of the G20 summit scheduled to open in London on Thursday.     With the impact of the global financial crisis on the real economy unfolding and deepening, priorities should be taken by various countries to adopt economic stimulus measures in line with their own situations and work hand in hand to promote growth and employment and improve the people's lives, according to Hu.     Efforts should also be made as soon as possible to stabilize the global financial market and earnestly give play to the role of finance in spurring the real economy to restore confidence of the people and enterprises, Hu said.     "The international financial system should undergo necessary reforms in an all-round, balanced, gradual and effective manner to prevent a similar crisis in the future," the president noted.     China as a responsible country would work with all the other parties attending the summit to help it yield "positive" and "practical" results, Hu said.     China pledged to give its own contribution to the recovery of world economy. The country would adhere to its fundamental national policy of opening up to the outside world and mutually beneficial and win-win strategies, Hu said.     A vigorous and more open China would not only benefit its own steady, fast growth, but help the international community fight the financial crisis and contribute to the world's peace and development, Hu said.     The country has set an 8 percent target for economic growth this year, still notably higher than the 1 percent world average estimated by the World Bank. China grew 9 percent in 2008, the slowest pace in seven years.     The global financial crisis and economic slowdown have created many difficulties for China, Hu said, citing the slump of exports and imports, slower industrial production and unemployment.     But a basket of governmental measures to stimulate domestic demand and promote economic growth have begun to take effect, he added.     Beginning in late 2008, the Chinese government has issued a comprehensive economic stimulus package including a 4 trillion yuan (585 billion U.S. dollars) investment plan and support plans for ten key industries.     The country's central bank has cut interest rates five times and lowered deposit reserve ratio four times in an effort to enhance capital fluidity.     "We have confidence, conditions and capabilities to keep a steady and rapid growth," Hu Jintao said.

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao's five-nation "journey of friendship and cooperation" was very successful, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said on Wednesday.     The tour, which started on Feb. 10 and ended on Feb. 17, took President Hu to Saudi Arabia, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania and Mauritius. Hu's visit to the five countries in the first month of the Chinese lunar new year was very successful as it fulfilled its goals -- consolidating friendship between China and these countries, boosting cooperation and reinforcing their will to tackle the joint challenges for common development, Yang said. Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) meets with his Senegalese counterpart Abdoulaye Wade in Dakar, capital of Senegal, Feb. 13, 2009They exchanged in-depth views on the current situation in the Middle East and Africa as well as other international and regional issues, and agreed to boost bilateral ties and push forward friendly cooperation to a new stage.     The president said as a developing country, China was ready to have closer cooperation and collaboration with the five nations, jointly maintain the interests and rights of the developing countries, and join hands with them to promote the South-South cooperation and North-South dialogue.     Third, to promote mutual benefit and win-win cooperation     Yang said Hu's tour to the five developing countries further deepened cooperation in various fields with them.     During the visit, China signed more than 20 cooperation agreements with the five nations in the fields of economy and trade, investment, energy and quality control, health, culture and infrastructure construction to further extend the depth and width of pragmatic cooperation.     During his visit to the African countries, President Hu said China would strengthen cooperation with them in agriculture, textile and infrastructure construction on the basis of mutual benefits, and a win-win principle.     Hu visited some China-aided projects, as part of follow-up actions to the Beijing Summit of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum. In Mali, Hu inaugurated a China-aided bridge construction project in the capital of Bamako and attended the inauguration of the China-Mali anti-malaria center.     Hu also attended the completion ceremony of Tanzania's state stadium and the Chinese culture center in Mauritius. He put forward new measures to enhance China-Africa cooperation, such as offering more chances for personnel training and scholarships to the four countries.     Yang said that China had developed comprehensive friendly relations with the four countries and provided unselfish assistance.     During Hu's visit, China reached consensus with the four African countries on enhancing bilateral trade and deepening pragmatic cooperation, which fully demonstrates the China-Africa cooperation has great potential and broad prospects based on equality, mutual benefits and a win-win principle for all.     Fourth, to create fresh highlights of friendly exchanges with local people.     President Hu received an abundance of warm greetings from the local people, an indication that Sino-Saudi and the Sino-African friendships were deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, Yang said.     At airports, meeting venues, stadiums, construction sites, hospitals and even classrooms, Hu talked with the local people from various walks of life in a gentle and friendly manner.     Despite a tight schedule, Hu managed to meet with the media in all the countries he visited and, on behalf of the Chinese people, extended good wishes and friendship to the local people.     In the Malian capital of Bamako, tens of thousands of local people, from the outskirts all the way to Hu's downtown hotel, waved the national flags of both countries and chanted "Thank you, China," and "Long-live China-Mali Friendship" in a voluntary yet grand gesture of welcome for Hu.     During the completion ceremony of Tanzania's state stadium, a Chinese assistance project, more than a hundred teenagers performed Chinese martial arts and acrobatics, and sang popular Chinese folk songs such as "Na Ni Wan" which is about a great production campaign near Yan'an during the revolutionary 1940s.     Hu also showed his concern for Chinese aid workers in Africa. He met with a Chinese medical team in Mali and encouraged them to make further efforts to help their Malian counterparts to develop the country's medical and health industry.     In Tanzania, Hu paid tribute to a cemetery for Chinese experts who had worked and died in the country in honor of pursuing China-Africa friendship.
