BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday stressed the growing of autumn and winter crops at an executive meeting of the State Council.     The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council would continue to strengthen the fundamental status of agriculture and boost the support for agriculture and grain output, according to the meeting.     All provincial areas and departments should put into practice the central government's policies, especially policies for the benefits of farmers, according to the meeting.     Despite uncommon droughts and the global economic recession, China was expected to have a big harvest this year, underpinning the country's stable and fast economic growth, according to the meeting.     Although China reported grain output increase for continuous years, the relationship between grain demand and supply would be strained in the long run as China's infrastructure for grain output was not stable, the grain planting efficiency was relatively low and natural disasters were frequent, according to the meeting.     Autumn and winter planting was key to next summer's harvest and even next year's harvest and measures should be taken to promote grain output, according to the meeting.     The measures should include promoting subsidy policies and stabilizing autumn and winter planting acreage, stabilizing market prices to protect farmers' interests and promoting technology services for farmers, according to the meeting.

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Tuesday China would not change the orientation of its stimulating economic policy as the country is at a critical stage in the recovery of the economy. Wen said, when meeting with World Bank President Robert Zoellick, that China's government would continue to pursue proactive fiscal and moderately easy monetary policies.     "We will not change the orientation of our policy," Wen said.     Wen said China would fully implement and continue to enhance and perfect policy in response to the international financial crisis to achieve the goals of economic and social development. The Ministry of Commerce predicts China's exports will slow their decline or even grow on a monthly basis.     "The macro-economic policy and measures that China adopted in response to the international financial crisis have been proved inconformity with reality, prompt, forceful and effective," Wen said.     Wen said the world economy was now showing signs of stabilizing, but an all-round recovery would be a slow, difficult and complicated process. It would require long-term, concerted efforts by every country in the world in strengthening dialogue, coordinating policy and deepening cooperation.     Wen said imbalances in the global economy were rooted in disparity in development. He urged the international community to pay special attention to difficulties faced by developing countries, especially the least developed ones. He said the gap should be lessened by increasing aid, writing off debts, opening markets and transferring technology.     Wen said China was ready to strengthen cooperation with the World Bank and make new contributions to achieving the UN Millennium Goals and sustainable development of the world.     This is the third time Zoellick has visited China since becoming World Bank President. Following his arrival Monday afternoon, Zoellick exchanged views on the major topics of his agenda in Beijing, the international financial crisis and climate change, with Chinese officials. Besides Beijing, Zoellick will visit Anhui province in east China.     Zoellick said the World Bank was willing to develop cooperation with China in areas such as international development aid, reform of international financial organizations and climate change.

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Military Commission (CMC) conferred the rank of general on three senior military officers here on Monday, bringing the total number of generals to 174. CMC Chairman Hu Jintao awarded the officers certificates of command at the promotion ceremony. An order for the promotion was announced by CMC Vice-Chairman Guo Boxiong.     The senior officers are deputy chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Ma Xiaotian, political commissar of the PLA's Academy of Military Sciences Liu Yuan, and political commissar of Chengdu Military Area Command Zhang Haiyang. CMC conferred the rank of general on the three senior military officers here on Monday.     China began to confer military ranks to military and police officers in 1955, when Chairman Mao Zedong promoted 10 senior officers to the rank of marshal, a rank which was later abolished.     Premier Zhou Enlai then issued a decree conferring the rank of general on 55 officers in 1955 and one each in 1956 and 1958.     Only one veteran of the revolution that founded the People's Republic of China who was among the first group of generals is still alive: 104-year-old Lu Zhengcao, former vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.     In 1965, the CMC abolished the system of military ranks and then resumed it in 1988. Since then, 118 senior military and police officers have been promoted to the rank of full general.     Hong Xuezhi, who became a member of the CMC in 1988, was the only officer to receive the honor twice in 1955 and 1988.     The PLA recognizes 10 military ranks for officers in active service: general, lieutenant general and major general; senior colonel, colonel, lieutenant colonel and major; captain, first lieutenant and second lieutenant.

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's major state-owned enterprises (SOEs) under the supervision of the central government reported a 30-percent fall in net profit last year, the country's state assets supervisor said over the weekend.     A total of 141 SOEs under the supervision of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council reported a net profit of 696.18 billion yuan (101.96 billion U.S. dollars) last year, down 30.8 percent from a year ago, the commission said in an online statement.     Yet, total assets of the 141 SOEs rose for the fifth consecutive year since 2004. Assets of the 141 state firms were worth 5.56 trillion yuan at the end of 2008, up 8.6 percent from the previous year.     Net profit of centrally administered SOEs had been rising for four years in a row from 2004 to 2007, but it fell last year as the global financial crisis struck.     The commission said 83 out of the total 141 were able to report a year-on-year growth in net profit last year.     These 141 SOEs also turned in taxes worth 1.04 trillion yuan last year, up 18.6 percent from a year ago.     The total assets of centrally administered SOEs were augmented by 2.6 trillion yuan in the past five years, or at an annualized average of 13.7 percent from 2004 to 2008.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China contributed 19.2 percent of the world economic growth in 2007, up from 2.3 percent in 1978, a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said. It said China tops the world in contribution to the global economic growth.     The report was the 18th by the NBS. It showcased the improving international status and influence of new China over years of development.     According to the NBS, China's gross domestic product (GDP) was 30 billion U.S. dollars in 1952, more than doubling by 1960, and reached 3.86 trillion U.S. dollars in 2008.     China had also become the world's third largest economy in 2008 by accounting for 6.4 percent of the global GDP.     Meanwhile, the country's gross national income (GNI) per capital has been catching up with the world average. The GNI per capita was 10.1 percent of the world average in 1978, and 32.3 percent in2008.     In terms of GNI per capita ranking among 209 countries and regions by the World Bank, China was 130th in 2008 at 2,770 U.S. dollars, up 15 places compared 750 U.S. dollars in 1997.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China is to hold a National Day military and mass parade as well as an evening gala on Tian'anmen Square Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).     Following will be highlights of the once-in-a-decade grand celebrations:     -- Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao, will be on Tian'anmen Rostrum to observe the parade.     -- President Hu is to review line-ups of the tri-service People's Liberation Army (PLA), standing in an open-top home-made Red Flag limousine.     -- National flag raising ceremony will be held on Tian'anmen Square.     -- Military parade is expected to involve more than 8,000 people, and a total of 52 types of new weapon systems, including the PLA's missiles, airborne early warning and control aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and other sophisticated military hardware, will be shown.     -- Military paraders will march goose-step through the square in new-style uniforms initiated in 2007.     -- Women militia soldiers in purple skirts will march goose-step through Tian'anmen Square, holding submachine guns. Chinese athletes reaped 51 gold medals in the Beijing Olympics, ranking the first in the gold medal list.     -- About 60,000 people will dance to the song "I Love China" at the grandiose National Day evening gala, showcasing the country's ethnic harmony and development.     -- Fireworks, designed by renowned Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang who masterminded the firework display at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, will dazzle the night of the National Day.     -- About 4,000 performers will form a "light cubic" formation in the center of Tian'anmen Square at the gala. BEIJING, Oct.17 (Xinhua) -- China's civil aviation industry made profits of 9.1 billion yuan (about 1.33 billions U.S. dollars) in the first nine months of 2009, despite the punch by the financial crisis on the world's civil aviation industry, said the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on Saturday.     Domestic air passenger traffic volume grew by 23.6 percent from a year earlier in first nine months of this year.     Performance of small airports, those that handle less than 1 million passengers annually, were most inspiring, said Li Jiaxiang, director with the CAAC, at the 2009 China International General Aviation Convention held in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Saturday.     Li said that passenger volume of small airports grew 26.7 percent year on year to 14.87 million in the first half.     He contributed the vibrant performance of small airports and regional air routes to the more balanced economic development of China's different regions in recent years, which was the result of the country's strategies to develop the relatively poor western and central regions and to revive the old industrial base in northeastern regions.     Besides, the fact that Chinese people are becoming richer and CAAC's policies carried out last year to subsidize small and medium-sized airports and regional air routes also helped the passenger volume rise of small airports, said Li.     By the end of 2008, China had 116 small airports, accounting for 73 percent of the total number of the country's airports.

LAS VEGAS, the United States, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A record number of Chinese businesses and manufacturers are participating in the annual exhibition of Chinese products in the United States, in a way to show their confidence in the U.S. market and American consumers, a senior Chinese official said here on Monday.     Inaugurating the "China Brand Show 2009" in the Las Vegas International Convention Center, Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said the Chinese government pays much attention to the difficulties its economy is facing amid the global financial crisis.     "Ever since November last year, the Chinese foreign trade has been going down for a consecutive nine months, which complies with the world trade situation in general," said the official.     Stressing that both China and the United States are each other's essential trading partner, Zhong said that the two countries had committed to open more to trade and investment and fight protectionism at the recent China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue, held in Washington, D.C. in July.     On China's domestic efforts to tackle the global economic recession, Zhong said the government has rolled out a huge economic stimulus package, and China's stabilizing and promising economic trend has contributed to the global confidence in an early economic recovery.     "China's GDP enjoyed a 7.1-percent growth in the first half of 2009, bringing the economic slump starting from the fourth quarter last year to an end," said the vice minister.     According to organizers of the annual show, more than 200 enterprises from China are participating this year, to showcase their products during the three-day event that ends on Wednesday.     The show also serves as a promotion event for the 106th China Import and Exports Fair, to be held in Guangzhou from Oct. 12 to Nov. 4 this year, officials said.     The China Import and Export Fair, the country's number one trade fair, has become a platform for enterprises from different countries to do business and one of the key channels for foreign companies to enter the Chinese market.

DALIAN, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that the World Economic Forum (WEF) is helpful in gathering confidence for fighting global economic downturn. Wen made the remarks while meeting with WEF chairman Klaus Schwab on the sidelines of the the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2009, also known as the Summer Davos.     The three-day forum, held in northeastern China's port city Dalian, has attracted some 1,400 participants from 86 countries and regions to discuss topics about the theme of "Relaunching Growth".
