BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Aluminum Corporation of China Ltd. (Chalco), reported a 99.9 percent plunge in full-year net profit to 9.2 million yuan (1.35 million U.S. dollars) in 2008, due to product price fluctuations on the international market, the company's annual report revealed Monday.     "The company suffered major losses from the snowstorm at the beginning of last year, and the earthquake disaster," said the statement.     The shock from the financial crisis, rises in raw material prices and consecutive plunges of finished product prices had posted "unprecedented difficulties and challenges" for the company, said the statement.     Chalco's business turnover reached 76.73 billion yuan, down 9.94 percent from last year, largely because of a decline in product prices, said a statement submitted to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.     The price of alumina, a major type of aluminum product, which at one point reached 4,500 yuan per tonne in the domestic market in 2008, dropped to 1,900 yuan per tonne as demand shrank drastically because of the financial crisis, said the statement.     Board chairman Luo Jianchuan said the company should actively cope with the problem, which would persist in 2009. Measures should be taken to cut cost, control investment, and maintain stable production.     Though estimated to suffer losses in the first quarter this year, Chalco was confident it would "get over the difficulties and have a bright prospect," said Luo.     Share prices of Chalco on Shanghai Stock Exchange plunged more than 4 percent to 10.46 yuan Monday morning.     Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco), Chalco's parent company, had obtained support from four Chinese banks, including the Bank of China (BOC), to finance its bid for the world's third largest miner Rio Tinto.     They have signed agreements to provide 21 billion U.S. dollars worth of syndicated loans to support the bid.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, will conclude its annual session Thursday morning.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the 11th CPPCC National Committee, is to deliver a speech at the closing ceremony.     The China National Radio, China Radio International and China Central Television will live broadcast the event.     The country's major news websites, including www.xinhuanet.com run by the Xinhua News Agency, www.people.com.cn run by the People's Daily and www.china.com.cn run by the China International Publishing Group will cover the closing ceremony to be held in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     The annual session of the 11th CPPCC National Committee started on March 3. HAIKOU, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Traffic had been resumed on Sunday on the highway that had been flooded by collapse of a small reservoir on March 27, in south China's Hainan Province, local authorities said.     The Wanning section of the province's eastern expressway had been resumed in both directions at 8:00 p.m. after nine days of reconstruction work, said an official with the provincial Communication Department.     The Bofeng reservoir, with a designed water storage capacity of1.02 million cubic meters, collapsed at about 10 p.m. in Xinglong Town, Wanning City.     The ensuing floods washed out a slip road to the province's eastern expressway and swept away two cars, injuring three people in the vehicles.     The water also inundated 20 hectares of farmland and caused slight damage to three riverside houses.     The municipal water conservancy administration had claimed that only 100,000 cubic meters of water burst from the reservoir. However, Chen Xingzhang, secretary of the CPC municipal committee of Wanning, doubted its credibility.     Vehicles had to detour around the flooded road over the past days.     The reservoir was being reinforced at the time of the accident. An investigation showed that workers of a company in charge of the project exploded part of the cofferdam before the water dropped to the safety level, which led to the collapse. The scheme had no approval from authorities at the time.     The construction contractor, Hongda Water Conservancy Projects Co, Ltd., based in Henan Province, and the project supervising company, Hainan Institute of Water Conservancy and Power Construction Survey and Design, were banned from carrying out further business in the city.     Police have detained four project workers in connection with alleged safety violations that led to the collapse in the province, the local Communist Party of China (CPC) committee said Monday.     Chen Ruchuan, former head of the water conservancy administration of Wanning City, and two deputy heads, were also sacked from their posts Monday, according to the Wanning municipal committee of the CPC.     The local government has been working on a plan to compensate people affected in the accident.

BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- China will foster a number of globally competitive logistics companies by 2011, said a stimulus plan of the country's logistics industry released on the government website on Friday.     All departments and local governments are urged to make efforts to achieve the goal, according to the plan, issued by the State Council, or the cabinet.     It said local authorities should help logistics companies solve problems in their development, realize a 10-percent annual growth in their output and lower the proportion of logistics expenses in the country's GDP.     The cabinet said in a notice that the country's logistics industry was affected by the unfolding global financial crisis. The stimulus plan was designated not only to promote its industrial upgrade but support development of other industries, expand consumption and increase employment.     As a composite service industry, logistics, comprising transport, storage, information industries and freight agencies, is an important part of national economy, said the plan.     The cabinet has rolled out support plans for ten industries including steel, auto and textile, targeting industrial growth, as well as restructuring and upgrading.

BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- China lodged another stern representation to Japan on Friday over Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone's remarks that the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and United States is applicable to the Diaoyu Islands.     According to the reports by the Taiwan-based Broadcasting Corporation of China (BCC), an official of the U.S. State Department, familiar with East Asian affairs, said at a press conference in Washington on Friday that the Diaoyu Islands were always under Japan's administrative jurisdiction and the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and United States was applicable to them.     Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone echoed the U.S. official's remarks afterwards.     Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu rejected Nakasone's remarks later in a press release, saying the Japan-U.S. Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty should not harm the interests of third parties, including China.     "Any words and deeds that bring the Diaoyu Islands into the scope of the Japan-U.S. Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty are absolutely unacceptable for the Chinese people," he said.     Ma stressed again that the Diaoyu Islands and adjacent islets had been Chinese territories since ancient times and China held "indisputable" sovereignty over the islands.     "We have lodged stern representations to Japan again and required the United States to clarify reports on the issue," he said.     He also urged the two countries to realize the great sensitivity of the Diaoyu Islands issue and proceed with discretion in word and deed, so as to avoid damage to the general interests of China-Japan and China-U.S. relations and regional stability.

BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese share prices registered a dramatic 3.87 percent drop Thursday as investor confidence collapsed ahead of the wary market performance and caused panic selling, analysts said.     The decline on overseas markets also had a negative effect.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, opened higher after the government announced stimulus plans, but dipped 85.05 points, or 3.87 percent, to 2,121.52 points in the afternoon session.     The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller Shenzhen bourse dropped to 7,777.90 points, down 463.76 points, or 5.63 percent.     Total turnover was 198.52 billion yuan (29.07 billion U.S. dollars), down from 209.05 billion yuan on Wednesday.     Losers led gainers by 841 to 34 in Shanghai and 719 to 36 in Shenzhen.     The weak performance of both the Wall Street and Hong Kong shares had cast a shadow over the mainland market, said analysts.     The financial sector, which led a market rebound Wednesday, failed to support the market in afternoon trading as it dipped 4.76 percent.     Shenzhen Development Bank, which almost fell by the 10-percent daily limit, ended up with an 8.91 percent drop to 13.8 yuan.     China Merchants Bank, which rose by 9.57 percent Wednesday, slipped4.36 percent to 14.27 yuan.     Machinery, automobiles, media and semiconductor sectors led the retreat, dropping 7.88 percent, 7.54 percent, 7.68 percent and 7.79 percent, respectively.     Non-ferrous metals also fell by 7.54 percent though the government announced a stimulus package for the industry Wednesday.     Chenzhou Mining, Corun New Energy, Tibet Mining, Advanced Technology and Materials, Western Metal Material, Sichuan Hongda and Xiamen Tungsten fell by the 10-percent daily limit.     Yongan Forestry bucked the trend, rising by the 10-percent daily limit. The forestry sector managed to close at no more than a 2 percent decline, as domestic media reported a government stimulus plan for forestry was under discussion.     China Eastern Airlines, one of the country's top three airlines, announced Thursday that its shareholders had passed a share placement plan which intended to raise 7 billion yuan from its parent company, China Eastern Group.     The company will issue 1.44 billion Shanghai-listed A shares at a price of 3.87 yuan per share, as well as 1.44 billion Hong Kong-listed H shares at 1.00 yuan each, according to the announcement.     The fund would reduce the company's asset liability ratio and improve its financial situation, said the company.     China Eastern Airlines shares were suspended Thursday.     Hong Kong shares dipped 0.85 percent to 12,894.94 points Thursday, while U.S. stocks fell Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 80.05 points, or 1.09 percent, at 7,270.89. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 8.24 points, or 1.07 percent, to 764.90. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 16.40 points, or 1.14 percent, to 1,425.43.
