KIEV, Sept 19 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Euro-China Forum ended Friday in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, as participants called for further dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe.     In the three-day forum entitled "Silk Road of the 21st century," nearly 200 politicians, academicians, economists from Europe and Asia discussed Sino-Europe relations and economic cooperation.     Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said China has made great achievements in its economic development and "Ukraine is willing to learn China's successful experiences and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China."     China has just successfully hosted the 2008 Olympic Games and its scale and level was impressive, the president said in a message to the forum.     Addressing the forum, former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius said that apart from economic cooperation, the Europeans and Chinese should enhance their cultural exchanges to know each other even better.     "The economic and trade relations is the core of the Europe- China cooperation. We, Europeans and Chinese, should seize every opportunity to smoothen out potential frictions and to bridge the gap between the intensification of our commercial relationship and the weakness of our intellectual exchanges. In this respect, the Euro-China Forum plays a crucial part. And its influence keeps growing." he said.     Fabius also noted that Europe in the past called China "a sleeping giant" and the giant is now waking up.     "The success of the Beijing Olympic Games showed China's vigor and enthusiasm," he said.     Chinese ambassador to Ukraine Zhou Li said that Ukraine is an important country in Europe and the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Ukraine and Europe.     The bilateral economic and trade relations between China and Ukraine have developed steadily in recent years, he said.     "I believe the friendly cooperative relations between China and Ukraine will see a more brilliant future thanks to bilateral joint efforts," Zhou Li said.     The non-governmental forum was initiated by China Europe International Business School to foster unofficial exchanges between the two sides of the Eurasian continent. The forum was first held in 2002 in Barcelona, Spain.

BEIJING, May. 13 -- China's trade surplus decreased slightly last month from a year ago amid declines in international trade growth triggered by the global economic slowdown.     Monthly surplus reached 16.68 billion last month, down 1.14 percent year-on-year but up 24.5 percent from 13.4 billion U.S. dollars in March, the General Administration of Customs said yesterday.     Exports in April rose 21.8 percent year-on-year to 118.71 billion U.S. dollars, while imports rose 26.3 percent to 102.03 billion U.S. dollars. China's trade surplus decreased slightly last month from a year ago amid declines in international trade growth triggered by the global economic slowdown.(    The sharp decline in April's export growth after a 30.6 percent rise in March should be seen as a return to the medium-term trend rather than a sudden weakening in China's exports, said Sun Mingchun with Lehman Brothers.     He said year-on-year growth of exports in March 2008 was abnormally strong given exports in March 2007 were extremely weak because exporters had frontloaded their shipments last February.     China's trade surplus has been narrowing since the government took measures to curb exports of resource-intensive and heavily polluting products and started to encourage imports from last year.     The World Trade Organization has predicted global trade growth will decline to 4.5 percent, 1 percentage point lower than last year. It could be the slowest rise since 2002.     "The global economy is facing more uncertainties this year given the possible shrinkage in US demand and inflationary pressures. Both these factors are expected to aggravate the global economic slowdown, further affecting trade," said Liang Yanfen, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation.     "Slowing external demand may take more time to impact export growth, but the weakening trend is becoming more evident both in and outside the US. Higher commodity prices and currency appreciation would check the continued rise in trade surplus," said Ken Peng, a Citi analyst.     Export growth stayed robust at 21.8 percent but is under pressure as even Asian demand has started to slow, suggesting that a weakening in the final product markets is affecting upstream producers while imports continue to be supported by a stronger currency, high commodity prices and government controls over trade in food and resources out of inflation concerns, he said.     The country's trade surplus in the first four months narrowed to 57.99 billion U.S. dollars, 5.31 billion U.S. dollars lower than a year ago.     Exports in these four months amounted to 424.6 billion U.S. dollars, up 21.5 percent, or 6 percentage points less than a year earlier. Imports were 366.6 billion U.S. dollars, up 27.9 percent, or 8.8 percentage points more than a year earlier.     Realized foreign investment reached 35.02 billion U.S. dollars during the four months, up 59.32 percent year-on-year, the Ministry of Commerce said.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The spacewalk performed by Chinese taikonauts Zhai Zhigang Saturday afternoon marks a major breakthrough in China's space program, Chinese President Hu Jintao said.     Hu talked with the trio taikonauts at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center for the Shenzhou-7 mission at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when he inquired the physical conditions of the three taikonauts.     "Your country and your fellow citizens thank you for your devotion to the space program," he said.     He congratulated the trio over the success of the spacewalk, and encouraged them to continue the efforts for a "complete success.     Zhai Zhigang was assisted during the spacewalk by Liu Boming in the orbit module. MIANYANG, Sichuan, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Ten days after the devastating earthquake in southwest China, six days after he returned to Beijing, Premier Wen Jiabao was back on the front lines of quake relief.     He flew to Mianyang in Sichuan Province, one of the worst hit cities, on Thursday afternoon. KUNMING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has pledged that his government will extend further support to poor areas inhabited by ethnic minority people.     "All ethnic groups form one big family. We must be united and help each other, to prosper and make progress together," Wen told a group of Jingpo nationality farmers during a visit to the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China's Yunnan Province. BEICHUAN, Sichuan, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Thirty-three more survivors were pulled out of debris in Beichuan county in southwest China on Friday as rescue efforts entered the fourth day since the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Monday.     The total number of survivors saved in Beichuan in Sichuan Province rose to 13,595, rescuers said.     Beichuan, a county of about 160,000 people, is one of the worst-hit region, with 80 percent of the buildings collapsed and at least 7,000 lives lost.     A 46-year-old survivor, Peng Zhijun, had lived on cigarettes, paper napkins and his urine when he was buried in the rubble in the past four days. He was still sober-minded almost 100 hours after the quake.     Doctors said he suffered bone fractures in the left arm and slight injuries in the legs, but the other parts of his body were basically in good condition.     "Natural disasters cannot be avoided. I had to save me from myself," Peng told reporters Friday evening. I only weigh 65 kilograms and they carried me by turns on their backs, walking miles to reach the medical station," said Deng.     The death toll in Sichuan alone exceeded 21,500 while 14,000 others remained buried as of 4 p.m. Friday, vice provincial governor Li Chengyun said at a press conference.     He said that 159,000 people were injured in the massive earthquake and 4.8 million people had been relocated.     Friday's death toll rose by about 2,000 from that of Thursday.     Sichuan had experienced 4,432 aftershocks in the past four days, Li said.     The national death toll from the earthquake rose to 22,069 as of 2 p.m. Friday, while 168,669 people were injured, the latest government statistics show.     In addition to the deaths in Sichuan, 364 were killed in Gansu Province, 109 in Shaanxi Province, 15 in Chongqing Municipality, two in Henan Province, one in Yunnan Province and one in Hubei Province.     The central government allocated another 1.17 billion yuan (167million U.S. dollars) to the relief fund for quake-hit areas on Friday. This brought the disaster relief fund from the central budget to 3.41 billion yuan.     Public donations in both cash and goods to the quake-hit areas rose to 3.175 billion yuan as of 4 p.m. Friday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     China has mobilized more than 130,000 troops for rescue operations, who were desperate to excavate survivors despite the passing of the prime time for survivors' rescue -- 72 hours after the quake.     Foreign rescue teams from Japan, Russia, the Republic of Korea and Singapore have arrived in Sichuan to aid the disaster relief efforts.

It left 69,227 dead with 17,923 still missing. Despite her tremendous grief, Jiang kept helping others affected in the quake.     Hu Jintao said the May earthquake was "a great test of Chinese will, courage and strength, as well as the Party's ruling capability."     "The relief work showed the great strength of the CPC and the socialist state, the great strength of the 1.3 billion Chinese people, the great strength of the reform and opening up, and the great strength of socialism with Chinese characteristics," he said.     During his speech, Hu suggested people who attended the ceremony stand in silent tribute for compatriots who died in the quake and the martyrs who sacrificed themselves in the relief work.     RECONSTRUCTION NOW A MAJOR FOCUS     Hu said the anti-quake work had again proved China's system of socialism had great vitality for development with the advantage of "concentrating strength on big events."     This proved people are the real driving force for the country's development.
