BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang here Tuesday urged medical workers to improve their professional ethics and skills to contribute to the country's medical reform.     "All medical staff should strengthen their professional ethics, pay attention to humane solicitude, improve professional techniques, strengthen service skills and strive to serve the people well," said Li during a ceremony awarding outstanding organizations, individuals and rural doctors in the medical field. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday that the key to Sino-U.S. relations was to mutually respect and accomodate each other's core interests and major concerns while differences from different national conditions were normal.     "The China-U.S. relations are very important. Maintaining and promoting such ties is a shared responsibility of both sides," Hu told reporters here after meeting visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     China is ready to work together with the United States to push forward the continuous, healthy and stable development of Sino-U.S. relations to better serve the interests of the two peoples and the people around the world, said the Chinese leader.     Hu said that the two sides have reaffirmed the "cardinal principle" of "mutually respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity" and voiced opposition to any attempt by any force that violates this principle.     He said that China appreciates President Obama's support for the one-China policy and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, and his respect for China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Taiwan issue and other matters.     "We have both agreed to conduct dialogues and exchanges on issues including human rights and religion, in the spirit of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, so as to boost understanding, mitigate differences and broaden consensus," Hu said. 

SINGAPORE, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Thursday that China and Singapore should strive to create new opportunities for bilateral cooperation in an effort to achieve economic recovery at an early date.     Hu made the remarks during a speech at a reception held by Singapore business circles, which was also attended by Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng. It will continue to develop friendly cooperation with countries around the world on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence, the president said.     The country will also continue to work with nations globally to strive to build a harmonious world with lasting peace and common prosperity, he said.     The business circles of Singapore voiced their belief that a stable and prosperous China would bring benefits to the region and the world as a whole.     They also expressed the willingness to continue to play an active role in advancing mutually beneficial cooperation and bilateral ties between Singapore and China.     Trade between China and Singapore reached 52.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, up 10.5 percent year-on-year.     Up until now, Singapore has made investments worth more than 40 billion U.S. dollar in China. It has become one of the top overseas investment destinations for Chinese companies.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that different countries should learn from each other to diversify cultures in the world.     "Each country in this interconnecting world has its own culture, its own history, and its own traditions," Obama said during a dialogue with Chinese students in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.     "It is very important for the United States not to assume what is good for us is automatically good for somebody else," he said when responding to a question raised by a Shanghai college student about how to promote cultural exchanges between different countries. BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called for attention on the ageing problem, noting this is a major issue that concerns "people's livelihood and the nation's lasting peace and stability."     Hui's call came several days ahead of the country's traditional "Senior Citizen's Day," or Double Ninth Festival, which falls on the ninth day of the ninth month in the lunar calendar, or Monday.     Hui, also director of China National Working Commission on Ageing, said at a recent meeting on the aging problem held in Beijing that the elderly were "valuable wealth of the Party and the country," and researchers should provide solid scientific foundation for the government to make strategies for the well-being of the ageing population.     Statistics from the commission show more than 8.3 percent of the 1.3-billion Chinese population are above 65, and in most cities, more than 50 percent of the elderly people live without the company of their children.     Hui said efforts should be made to deal with new conditions concerning ageing, such as unbalanced distribution of the aged between urban and rural areas.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in China on Sunday night for a four-day visit to the world's most populous country.     The visit by the leader of the largest developed country to the biggest developing one has roused great interest among observers as China-U.S. relationship has always been one of the most important and complicated bilateral ties in the world.     During the first leg of his Asian tour in Japan, Obama said the United States welcomes China's appearance on the world stage, and does not seek to contain China. He said that "the rise of a strong and prosperous China can be a source of strength for the community of nations," striking a positive keynote for his forthcoming China visit.     His Chinese counterpart President Hu Jintao has also said that China-U.S. relations have significance and influence far beyond their bilateral ties, and a sound Sino-U.S. relationship is not only in the fundamental interests of the two nations and peoples, but also conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region and the world at large.     China has always maintained that, as the biggest developing and the developed countries, China and the United States share broad common interests on the vital issues of peace and development, and shoulder great responsibilities.     During a media interview before his Asia tour, Obama said "on critical issues, whether climate change, economic recovery, nuclear non-proliferation, it's very hard to see how we succeed or China succeeds in our respective goals without working together."     The remarks, however, also hinted at the difficulty of bilateral cooperation on thorny issues.     For instance, the trade spats between the two countries have recently flared up, with the U.S. government imposing anti-dumping duties on imports of poultry, tires and steel pipes from China. China criticized the measures as protectionist.     The two countries are also at odds on the issue of climate change. As the world's two largest green-house gas emitters, China and the U.S. have both pledged commitments, but their different status in economic development and interpretation of the principle of "differentiated responsibilities" have made substantial consensus difficult.     However, the Obama administration has repeatedly indicated that the two sides would not "allow any single issue to detract from our broader overall relationship," which is too important to go astray.     The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a major U.S. think tank, said in a report, "U.S.-China partnership is indispensable for addressing many of the main challenges of the 21st century ... The premise for U.S.-China relations going forward must be a shared commitment to working together to promote the global good."     To share significant global responsibilities, China and the United States should view and handle their bilateral ties from a strategic and overall perspective. Both sides should promote dialogue, expand cooperation, respect each other, seek common ground while reserving differences, and take care of each other's core interests.     Obama once quoted a famous ancient Chinese philosopher Mencius to underscore the importance of resolving disagreements between the two nations through talks.     "A trail through the mountains, if used, becomes a path in a short time, but, if unused, becomes blocked by grass in an equally short time," he said.     It is the shared hope that both sides could blaze a path towards the future, so as not to let the "grass" of suspicion and difference block the way. China also hopes Obama's visit will leave fresh and impressive footprints on this path.     The United States has changed its China policy from isolation, containment, to engagement and today's relationship of positive and comprehensive cooperation. This represents a profound change in the world arena.     As far as both countries keep to the right orientation of the development of bilateral ties, enhance mutual trust, expand cooperation and take care of each other's key interests, they will ensure the steady development of bilateral ties and contribute further to world peace, stability and prosperity.

BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter Scale hit a border area between northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Saturday afternoon, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.     The epicenter was at 38.2 degrees north latitude and 106.6 degrees east longitude.     Xinhua reporters in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia, said tremor was felt in the downtown area.     No casualties have been reported.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday the U.S.-China cooperation enables both countries to be more prosperous and more secure and that young people are the best ambassadors.     Obama had a dialogue with 500-strong Chinese college students Monday afternoon in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, a highlighted activity in the first stop of his four-day maiden trip to China since taking office in January.     He covered a wide range of topics, notably the outlook of Sino-U.S. cooperation and youth exchanges between the two countries, while delivering opening remarks and answering questions from the students and Chinese Internet users.     POSITIVE SINO-U.S. TIES     Obama said China is a nation that encompasses both a rich history and a belief in the promises of the future and that the same can be said of the relationship between the two countries. The Shanghai Communiqué signed 37 years ago opened the door to a new chapter of engagement between the governments and the people of the two countries, he said.     "Today we have a positive, constructive and comprehensive relationship that opens the door to partnership on the key global issues of our time: economic recovery, development of clean energy, stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the surge of climate change, and the promotion of peace and security in Asia and around the globe," Obama said.     "We have seen what is possible when we build on our mutual interests and engage on the basis of mutual respect."     The success of that engagement depends on understanding, on sustaining an open dialogue and learning about one another and from one another, he said.     "Our relationship has not been without disagreement and difficulties. But the notion that we must be adversaries is not predestined," Obama said, noting that the two countries "share much in common" while they are "different in certain ways."     He said one country's success need not come at the expense of another.     "That is why the United States insists we do not seek to contain China's rise; on the contrary, we welcome China as a strong and prosperous and successful member of the community of nations, a China that draws on the rights, strengths and creativity of individual Chinese like you," Obama said to the students.     YOUNG PEOPLE BEST AMBASSADORS     Obama announced in his speech that the United States would further expand its youth exchanges with China by increasing the number of students studying in China to 100,000.     "These exchanges mark a clear commitment to build ties among our people, as surely as you will help us determine the destiny of the 21st century," he said.     He said young people in China and U.S. are the best ambassadors and that cooperation between the countries should go beyond the governments.     "I believe strongly that cooperation must grow beyond our government. It must be rooted in our people, in the studies we share, in the business we do, in the knowledge that we gain, and even in the sports we play, and these bridges must be built by men and women just like you, and your counterparts in America," Obama said.     "I am absolutely confident that America has no better ambassadors to offer than our young people, for they just like you are filled with talent, energy and optimism about the history that is yet to be written.     "So let this be the next step in the steady pursuit of cooperation between our two nations and the world," Obama said.     "If there is one thing we can take from today's dialogue, I hope that it is a commitment to continue this dialogue going forward," Obama said in his speech.

The summit ended with five agreements mainly on energy and environmental cooperation.     But it also ended without a breakthrough on issues that have brought stalemate between the sides, such as trade disputes and arms embargoes.     Wen said China will keep the yuan basically stable and carry out currency reform at its own, gradual pace.     A stable yuan is not only good for the Chinese economy but the world, Wen said.     The meeting took place against the backdrop of concern about the rising euro and the possibility it might derail the recovery in Europe, which imports heavily from China.     The yuan began gaining against major currencies after a set of exchange rate reforms were introduced in July 2005. After rising nearly 20 percent against the US dollar, it hovered around 6.83 to the US dollar for about a year. In the past month or so, the euro has risen to a 15-month high.     Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker joined other European leaders in lobbying China's senior officials.     The Chinese officials explained that it was difficult to make a case for "immediate renminbi appreciation" in a country where 40 million people live on less than 1 U.S. dollar a day. It's decided that now is not the time to do that."     Despite lingering disputes, including trade protectionism and the EU's ban on the transfer of technology to China, Wen Monday raised expectations for improved relations with Beijing's largest trading partner.     "China and Europe walking together hand-in-hand will make the steps of humankind more steady, and that best illustrates the strategic significance of our ties," said Wen.     Barroso and other EU leaders Monday also applauded fresh Chinese commitments on countering climate change.     Stanley Crossick, founding chairman of the European Policy Centre, said Europe will need to commit to lifting its arms embargo against China.     "Beijing is right that listing China among a handful of embargoed pariah states is totally inconsistent with the treatment of a strategic partner," he said.     Crossick suggested that EU officials be trained in contemporary China and taught Mandarin.     Wen opened the door to better understanding Monday, announcing that 2011 will be the year for China-EU youth communication and the establishment of other youth and cultural exchange mechanisms.

TAIPEI, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Kuomintang (KMT) Party won 12 county and city chief seats in Taiwan's local elections Saturday, while the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) landed four seats, voting results showed.     The KMT won 289 county and city lawmaker seats whereas the DPP won 128. Candidates with no party affiliations and those who did not run in the election through political parties won 170 seats.     The KMT also won a majority of 121 seats in the election of township chiefs, as opposed to the DPP's 34 seats.     The voting, also known as "three-in-one elections," lasted from8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
