BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua)-- China and the European Union (EU) should properly cope with trade frictions, and push forward economic and trade cooperation, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said here Wednesday.     Wang was meeting with EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton, who is on her first visit to China.     "China and the EU should appropriately handle trade frictions, and fight resolutely against trade protectionism," he said.     Since late July, the EU has launched a series of anti-dumping actions against Chinese products, covering steel wire rod, seamless steel tubes, sodium gluconate, steel cables and aluminum road wheels.     "Some of China's major trading partners have shown signs of protectionism during the global financial crisis, and there has been rising trade protectionism inside the EU," said Sun Yongfu, who is department chief in charge of European affairs of Chinese Commerce Ministry.     Vice premier Wang said the two sides' top priorities at the present time should be making efforts to continuously further coordination and cooperation, jointly tiding over the global financial crisis, and facilitating the recovery of regional and international economy. Bilateral trade volume reached 425.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.     During her visit, Ashton was scheduled to meet with Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, and attend the 13th China International Fair for Investment and Trade in Xiamen city of southeast Fujian Province.

Meanwhile, 101 countries have set up military attaché offices in China.     Among the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, China currently sends the most peacekeepers. More than 13,000 Chinese peacekeepers have carried out 18 UN peacekeeping operations since China's first dispatch of military observers to such operations in 1990.     Since the end of last year, the Chinese navy has carried out escort missions in the waters of the Gulf of Aden off Somali and has escorted more than 800 ships.

MACAO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR) Legislative Election General Auditing Committee announced the official results of the election of the fourth Legislative Assembly of Macao on Tuesday night.     In line with the Basic Law, the new legislature is composed of 29 seats including 12 directly-elected seats, 10 indirectly-elected seats, and seven others which will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     A total of 122 candidates from 16 groups contested in the direct elections, while the indirect elections did not take place since only 10 candidates have been fielded by the four constituencies involved for the 10 seats.     Eight of the 12 candidates who won the direct elections were veteran lawmakers that have served their terms in the legislature, which includes Kwan Tsui Hang, Chan Meng Kam, Ng Kuok Cheong, Angela Leong On Kei, Jose Maria Pereira Coutinho, Lee Chong Cheng, Ung Choi Kun, and Au Kam San were the winners of the direct elections, while Ho Ion Sang, Mak Soi Kun, Chan Wai Chi and Melinda Chan Mei Yi become the new faces in the legislature.     For the part of indirect elections, the list of winners comprises Ho Iat Seng, Kou Hoi In, Fong Chi Keong, and Cheang Chi Keong of the industrial, commercial and financial sector; Lau Cheok Va, Lam Heong Sang of labor sector; Chui Sai Cheong and Leonel Alberto Alves of professional sector; Vitor Cheung Lup Kwan and Chan Chak Mo of social, cultural, educational and sports sector.     The election of the fourth term of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR officially started Sunday morning. URUMQI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior government official said Friday the situation in Urumqi, the capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was under control after local residents had taken to the streets over two days to protest against hypodermic syringe attacks.     There were no major protests in the city Friday, a day after massive protests that left five people dead Thursday, said Executive Deputy Mayor Zhang Hong. BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday published a regulation to enforce environmental evaluation on new projects from October, in an effort to prevent pollution or ecological destruction from the beginning.     According to the regulation, approved on Aug. 12 by the State Council, the Cabinet, environmental evaluations are required before the planning of development projects being approved.     Under the regulation, environmental evaluation of city-level projects will be conducted by local environmental authorities while provincial projects must be evaluated by environmental authorities under the State Council.     The regulation covers all development activities, from land use and the development of rivers or oceans, to development projects related to industrial, agricultural, husbandry, and forestry sectors as well as energy, water conservation, transportation, urban construction, tourism, and exploration of natural resources.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday pledged to further assist the development of other developing countries when addressing the UN General Assembly during its the general debate.     "As a responsible and major developing country, China has always made common development an important aspect of its foreign policy," Hu said in his speech.     "We have made great efforts to provide support and assistance to other developing countries, and fulfilled our commitment under the UN Millennium Declaration," he said.     To further assist other developing countries, the Chinese president said, China will increase support for those hit hard by the global financial crisis, earnestly implement relevant capital increase and financing plans, intensify trade and investment cooperation and help raise their capacity for risk-resistance and sustainable development.     "China will continue to implement the measures announced at the UN High-level Event on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to assist other developing countries in speeding up development and facilitate the attainment of the MDGs," he added.
