BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's chief negotiator Ching Pin-kung hailed Wednesday significant progress on cross-Straits relations over the past year.     The cross-Straits relations in 2008 have made several breakthroughs, said Chiang, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), at Wednesday's press conference.     SEF and mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), the two main negotiation bodies, held their first meeting in Beijing last June after the talks were suspended for almost 10 years. The second meeting was held in Taiwan in November.     The two sides reached six agreements after the two rounds of talks, including the historical direct links of transport, trade and post services which started on December 15.     "With all these breakthroughs, the cross-Straits ties have turned to be normal and practical with mutual trust and understanding," Chiang said.     Chiang said SEF would persist with building "positive" and "interactive" cross-Straits relations in the coming new year.     The main topics in the next round of the talks between the mainland and Taiwan, scheduled for later this year, would include joint efforts on cracking down on crimes, financial cooperation and regular cross-Straits flights, Chiang said.     Board members, supervisors and consultants in SEF planned to visit the mainland in 2009, according to Chiang.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- A food company in east China's Shandong Province has been allowed to resume export of bean stuffing to Japan following earlier suspicion of food poisoning, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said Friday.     In a brief statement posted on its Web site, the GAQSIQ said the Japanese authorities could not conclude that the food-poisoning symptoms of two Japanese people resulted from consumption of the bean stuffing from Qingdao Fushijia Food Co., Ltd. in Shandong.     According to the GAQSIQ, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare said Dec. 17 that Japan decided to lift import ban on Fushijia's products since the Chinese side had found no quality problem with Fushijia's bean stuffing. The Japanese side had also not discovered any harmful chemical substance in imported products.     Japan banned the import of Fushijia's bean stuffing in September after two employees of a Japanese food producer importing Fushijia's products became ill.

TAIPEI, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- The mainland-donated panda pair is scheduled to meet the Taiwan public on Jan. 26, the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Taipei city government announced on Thursday.     Taipei mayor Hau Lung-bin will visit the panda pair a few days earlier, on Jan. 24, with 500 orphans and children from poor families.     "If all the quarantine measures for the panda pair and other procedures for their moving into the zoo go well as scheduled, the 500 children invited by the city government will be the first visitors on Jan. 24," Hau said.     The Taipei city zoo said an opening ceremony for the panda enclosure would also be held on Jan. 24. The area would be open to the public on the morning of Jan. 26.     It's estimated an average of 22,000 panda visitors per day will come to the enclosure once it's opened, according to the zoo. To accommodate the crowds, the zoo will extend business hours until 18:00 p.m. during the Spring Festival holidays.     The city government said earlier in a statement that the pandas were expected to attract about 6 million visitors to the zoo annually, double the current number.     The pair of 4-year-old giant pandas named "Tuan Tuan" and "Yuan Yuan" (when linked, their names mean "reunion" in Chinese), have now become "sweethearts" on the island. Cartoon images of the bears are displayed at bus stations and the airport's entrance.     The mainland announced in May 2005 it would donate two giant pandas to Taiwan. Their departure had been delayed for more than three years. Improved cross-Straits ties made their journey to Taiwan possible.

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council unveiled a long-awaited support package for the auto and steel sectors Wednesday to boost the two "pillar industries".     Under the plan, the government will lower the purchase tax on cars under 1.6 liters from 10 percent to 5 percent from Jan. 20 to Dec. 31 in a bid to stimulate sales.     It will also allocate 5 billion yuan (730 million U.S. dollars) to provide one-off allowances to farmers to upgrade their three-wheeled vehicles and low-speed trucks to mini-trucks or purchase new mini-vans under 1.3 liters from March 1 to Dec. 31. The government will offer financial support to promoting the use of energy-saving autos and those fueled by new energies, and support automakers to develop independent brands and build auto and parts export bases.     The plan also urges improvements in the credit system for car purchase loans. More than 93 percent of Chinese vehicles are sold in the domestic market, but less than 10 percent are purchased on credit.     It also requires accelerated upgrading of the steel sector, transforming "big" industry competitors into "strong" international players.     It said the industry needed to eliminate outdated technology, and must not establish new projects that merely add to steel output.     China also needed to increase domestic demand for steel and adopt a more flexible tax rebate policy to keep international markets.     Special funds will be allocated from the central budget to promote technological advancement of the sector, readjustment of products mix and improvements of product quality, according to the plan.

BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council Thursday approved a plan to deepen reform and opening up in the southern Pearl River Delta area, where the country's reform and opening up drive was initiated 30 years ago.     The plan was unveiled on the day when the nation was commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 3rd plenary session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which decided to open up the country and reform its struggling economy.     The pioneer area of the country's reform and opening up scheme was urged to accelerate economic restructuring and take the lead in building a resource-conserving and environment-friendly society, according to the plan approved by an executive meeting of the State Council, or the Cabinet.     The plan also pressed the area to promote technologies so as to excel in innovation, and coordinated development in both urban and rural areas was also stressed.     The meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, said the area was also to take the lead in deepening reforms and opening up, so that an improved socialist market economy system could be established and a more open economic system could be set up as the region enhances its cooperation with neighbors Hong Kong and Macau.     The meeting said the Pearl River Delta is still maintaining stable and relatively fast development at present, but it also admitted that the area received powerful shocks from the current financial crisis, as there are many smaller and export-oriented enterprises in the region.     To keep the pace of development would be the top priority of the region at the present stage, the meeting said.

When I went back, everybody was so interested. I was only 15 years old, but they had all questions for me like I knew something special about China. Just because I had been there," Hoarfrost recalled.     "It (Ping Pong diplomacy) is the first step of the march towards the relations between the two countries. It played a very important role," said U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte at the friendship game, a tribute to three-decade China-U.S. diplomatic ties.     Negroponte was the highest ranking U.S. official to come to China for a series of commemorative events marking the 30th anniversary diplomatic relations.     Although the 51-year-old Hoarfrost lost to Qi by 3 to 11, she said she enjoyed the match. "Ping Pong really can bring people together."     The match not only helped the veterans revive the old memories, but also connected the younger generations between the two nations. She played very well," Hsing said of Chen, a member of Chinese women team wining the 2008 Asia Juvenile Championship.     "Good job," Deputy Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Guangya told Hsing, a Chinese American born in San Jose, California.     "The rematch helped pass down the old friendship to the younger generation," said Liang Geliang, a top player who played against the U.S. team in Beijing in 1971.     As the finale of Wednesday's match, Liang and Hsing played together against another pair of Qi and Peter Li, the other junior American.     Their two matches went to the wire and ended in a tie, bringing down the house.     Since her first tour in 1971, Hoarfrost has visited China five times, all in the name of Ping Pong diplomacy.     "So many changes in China. People are much better educated now, have much more communications with other countries. People travel out of China and bring back what they learn. People have many more opportunities to learn."     Changes also took place in the China-U.S. relations over the past 30 years. "We now have a very broad and deep relationship in many different walks of lives, politically, socially, economically, and in terms of science and education," said Negroponte.     Looking to the future, Negroponte said there are "many different possibilities" for the U.S.-China relations. "I am sure the next 30 years will be even better."     "I'm very happy to win. I hope I can make it to the 2012 London Olympics," Hsing said with excitement. BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Ministry has demanded that the U.S. Embassy to China facilitate travel for the families of those killed and injured in Friday's tour bus crash near the Hoover Dam in Arizona. In a statement released Sunday, the ministry confirmed that six Chinese nationals died and nine were injured, including one from Hong Kong.     The Chinese Embassy in the United States and Consulate General in Los Angeles immediately dispatched a team assist U.S. authorities with treating the injured and investigating the accident.
