BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday visited an exhibition which pays tribute to victims of the May earthquake in Sichuan Province and the nation's concerted efforts to assist the disaster-stricken areas.     Photos and videos showing the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake, as well as items that were used to rescue victims drew attentions of the leaders.     They were also briefed on how the people from all walks of life had made donations and contributions to help the earthquake-stricken areas recover from the country's worst disaster in the past 30 years. The quake, which has left more than 80,000 dead or missing, was the deadliest and strongest tremor to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake.

SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang had a full schedule on Saturday afternoon as he spent time in north Hebei Province visiting infant patients stricken by tainted milk powder, talking to doctors, dairy farmers and salesman in a local supermarket.     In Dingxing County Hospital of Hebei Province, he went to the infants ward where he talked to parents and inquired about the symptoms and progress of the patients' illness. Li made the remarks while talking to a salesman in Womei Supermarket in the county seat of Dingxing.     He then went to Shiqiao Village of Dingxing Township where he asked about the milk supply.     He asked local officials to take measures to ensure the farmers' interests would not be hurt by the scandal.     More than 6,200 infants developed kidney stones after drinking a baby formula tainted with melamine. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is. The formula has so far killed four infants.     Dairy giant Sanlu based in the Hebei provincial capital of Shijiazhuang was the first company exposed in the scandal.

NANNING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region became the 10th Chinese locality to have replaced gasoline and diesel oil with bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday out of environmental and energy efficiency concerns.     Petrol stations in all the 14 cities of Guangxi began to sell bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday and in two weeks, traditional petrol and diesel oil will be phased out, said Fu Jian, an official in charge of transport with the regional government.     Fu said about 350,000 motor vehicles and more than 3 million motorbikes will have their tanks cleaned up for the fuel change.     Presently nine other Chinese provinces are using ethanol fuel including Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces in the northeast, Henan and Hebei provinces in the north, Anhui, Shandongand Jiangsu provinces in the east and the central Hubei Province.     Guangxi is the first Chinese locality to commercially produce ethanol fuel with cassava instead of grain. The region produces 7.8 million tonnes of cassava a year, more than 60 percent of China's total.     It is home to China's first bio-ethanol fuel production base that went into operation in December in the coastal city of Beihai. The base is designed to produce 200,000 tonnes of biofuel annually out of about 1.5 million tonnes of cassava.     China banned the use of grain for ethanol production last year to ensure sufficient food supplies, and biofuel manufacturers havesince turned to sweet potatoes, sorghum and straw stalks instead.     Ethanol fuel is believed to help ease China's energy supply bottleneck. Customs statistics say China's net crude oil import climbed at least 12 percent year on year to reach 160 million tonnes in 2007, and the country's reliance on crude oil import is at least 46 percent.     It is also believed to help cut carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions, by around 30 percent and 10 percent respectively.     Chinese officials said the country's ethanol fuel sales will reach 30 million tonnes in 2010 to make up half of the total gasoline supplies.

VIENTIANE, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here on Saturday evening, starting his working visit to Laos.     Wen is also scheduled to attend the 3rd Summit of the Great Mekong Subregion countries -- China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar -- to be convened in this Laos capital city on Monday.     According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wen, invited by Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, will meet with Lao President Choummaly Saygnasone and hold talks with his Lao counterpart Bouasone on future bilateral cooperation.     Wen and Bouasone are scheduled to attend the signing ceremony of cooperation agreement in the sectors of economy, technology, coal and e-governance. The great majority of these people live in rural areas where they lead subsistence or semi-subsistence agricultural lifestyles.     The area boasts abundant natural resources and huge development potential. With a long history of cultural and economic exchanges among the nations, the area has formed peculiar cultural and economic characteristics based on different folk customs and natural landscapes of the six nations sharing the river.     The first GMS Summit was held in Cambodia's Phnom Penh in 2002,and the second in southwest China's Kunming in 2005. 

LANZHOU, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Local governments should promote the spirit of quake relief to carry out reconstruction work and economic and social development, said a senior Chinese official.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said this during his inspection tour to quake-affected Shaanxi and Gansu provinces from Sunday to Thursday that there have been heavy tasks for local governments in terms of relocating quake survivors and rebuilding damaged or destroyed facilities. BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The parties involved in the Korean Peninsula nuclear talks held intense bilateral meetings here to pave the way for the discussions between chief negotiators, which are scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Kim Sook, chief negotiator of the Republic of Korea (ROK) delegation, met with his U.S. counterpart Christopher Hill and Chinese chief delegate Wu Dawei on Wednesday.    After the bilateral meetings, Kim told reporters that he felt neither "optimistic" nor "pessimistic" about the six-party talks, and each party needed to cool down and detail the relevant issues. The heads meeting of a new round of six-party talks on Korean Peninsular nuclear issue will be held here on July 10.     Hill, after meeting with the ROK side, said they touched upon issues including the verification process for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) denuclearization, fuel aid to the country, food shipments and other issues.     Hill said he is scheduled to have a breakfast meeting on Thursday with Russian chief delegate Alexei Borodavkin, after which there will be a trilateral meeting of China, the United States and Russia, with the aim of fully preparing for the six-party talks in the afternoon.     Hill met with the DPRK delegation soon after he arrived in Beijing on Tuesday afternoon, saying that denuclearization verification, including documents, site visits and interviews, would be a focal point in the upcoming meeting.     Under an agreement reached in October, the DPRK agreed to abandon all nuclear weapons and programs and declare all its nuclear programs and facilities by the end of 2007, in exchange for diplomatic and economic incentives.     The DPRK submitted its nuclear declaration to China on June 26 and demolished the cooling tower at the Yongbyon nuclear reactor on June 27, though it missed the deadline.
