BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States issued a joint statement in Beijing Tuesday, vowing to deepen counter-terrorism consultation and cooperation between the two countries on an equal and mutually beneficial basis.     The two sides promised they would boost joint efforts to combat transnational crime and criminal organizations as well as money laundering and the financing of terrorism, including counterfeiting and recovery of illicit funds.     Issued after the meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama, the statement formulated that the two countries would strengthen cooperation on criminal investigations and deepen collaboration in combating embezzlement.     Other areas, such as counter-narcotics, control of pre-cursor chemicals and combating unlawful migration, smuggling and human trafficking, are also targeted for more cooperation in the future.     The two countries agreed to exchange evidence and intelligence on law enforcement issues in a timely and reciprocal manner, and undertake joint investigations as well as provide investigative assistance on cases of mutual interest, according to the statement.     Obama is in Beijing for a four-day state visit to China that started in Shanghai on Sunday night.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang urged the country's railway departments to make efforts to promote safe railway transport and build quality railway projects to better serve socio-economic development.     Continuous efforts should be made to relieve railway transport capacity shortage and further expand the country's railways network, Zhang told a national railway conference.     "Although shortage of the country's passenger and goods transportation by railways has been eased to some extent, railways are still a bottleneck restricting economic development," Zhang said.     He stressed railway technology innovation, railway project quality and improvement of services for the convenience of passengers.     Zhang also urged railway departments make full preparations to cope with traffic peak during the upcoming holiday, when millions of people rush back home for the Spring Festival, China's Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 14.     In 2009, China's railways saw a passenger flow of 1.52 billion and transported 3.32 billion tonnes of freight, both breaking records. BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's auto sales and output both exceeded 12 million units in the first 11 months, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced Monday.     The CAAM forecast sales and output for the whole year would both exceed 13 million units.     In November alone, sales reached more than 1.35 million units, according to preliminary statistics. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States underlined that each country and its people have the right to choose their own path, and agreed to hold the next round of human rights dialogue in Washington by the end of February 2010, said the China-U.S. joint statement issued Tuesday.     According to the statement, the Chinese and U.S. sides agreed that all countries should respect each other's choice of a development model.     "Both sides recognized that China and the United States have differences on the issue of human rights," said the statement, "Addressing these differences in the spirit of equality and mutual respect, as well as promoting and protecting human rights consistent with international human rights instruments, the two sides agreed to hold the next round of the official human rights dialogue in Washington D.C. by the end of February 2010."     The two sides agreed that promoting cooperation in the field of law and exchanges on the rule of law serves the interests and needs of the citizens and governments of both countries, and decided to convene the China-U.S. Legal Experts Dialogue at an early date.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 -- Shanghai has set a GDP growth rate target for the year of more than 8 percent, almost the same as 2009's economic development rate.     Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng yesterday announced the target at a one-day session of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China.     He added the growth rate of value-added output from the service industry should be much higher than the GDP rate.     The city didn't set a higher GDP goal because it wanted to put more effort into restructuring the economy than simply seeking more GDP growth, Yu told the meeting.     The city's GDP growth was estimated to be more than 8 percent last year, a little lower than the average national level.
