BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-nine large and medium-sized Chinese steel producers reported 5.18 billion yuan (762.46 million U.S. dollars) in aggregate losses in the first four months, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said here Friday.     The 29 producers were among 72 surveyed by CISA, the association's vice chairman, Luo Bingsheng, said.     The 72 companies reported 575.59 billion yuan in revenue, down 18.9 percent year on year, Luo said. They paid 15.42 billion yuan in taxes, down 85.07 percent year on year, Luo said.     Losses were mainly caused by slumping domestic steel prices, Luo said.     Many producers have cut costs, and the production cost of steel dropped 13.75 percent in the first quarter, Luo said.

SHANGHAI, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Standard Chartered Bank (China) Limited announced Wednesday that it plans to issue 3.5 billion yuan (512 million U.S.dollars) financial bonds in China, the first foreign bank to issue Renminbi bonds in the Chinese mainland.     The announcement was made in the wake of a circular released by the State Council in April on building Shanghai into an international financial center and shipping hub.     The municipal government of Shanghai convened a working meeting late last month on preparation for the financial center goal, promising to support foreign banks to issue yuan-denominated bonds.     "As China's financial market continues to liberalize, Standard Chartered is seeing a number of opportunities for our business," said Peter Sands, Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bank, during his visit to Beijing this week.     The issuance is expected to help elevate the Renminbi's status as an international reserve currency, develop local capital markets, and contribute towards Shanghai's development as a global financial center, said Sands.     Standard Chartered Group reported 26 percent income growth in 2008, or 13.97 billion U.S. dollars despite the difficult global economic environment.     In China, the bank has grown by an average annual compounded growth rate of 80 percent over the past four years.     Standard Chartered Bank is China's oldest foreign bank enjoying150 years of history. It is among the first batch of locally-incorporated foreign banks and has one of the largest foreign bank networks operating in China.

BEIJING, May 3 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales climbed 9 percent from a year ago to about 12 billion yuan (1.76 billion U.S. dollars) during the three-day May Day holiday, the Ministry of Commerce said Sunday.     The estimate was based on sales from May 1 to May 3 at 1,000 major domestic retailers monitored by the ministry.     The ministry said robust sales were reported for gold, jewelry, home appliances and autos, as retailers launched promotion campaigns.     Sales of gold and other jewelry rose 19.6 percent, the ministry said, without giving specific figures.     However, it said the Beijing Caishikou Department Store, a major gold retailer in the capital, saw its sales nearly double to 14.3 million yuan on May 1 alone.     Sales of appliances, such as LCD TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators and lap-tops, increased 11.4 percent, while those of automobiles grew 9.2 percent.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that China and Germany should join hands to combat trade and investment protectionism.     The premier made the remark during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which the two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.     Wen said cooperation between China and Germany, both among the world's major economies, is developing smoothly in a variety of fields.     He said the two sides should continue to handle their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and keep up high-level exchanges. The two nations, Wen said, also should strengthen communications and coordination to push for a healthy and stable development of their bilateral ties.     China, Wen said, always adheres to a win-win strategy in opening to the outside world and insists on the maintenance of a fair and open market environment. He said China would never discriminate against foreign enterprises or products.     The premier said China's determination to cope with climate change is firm, its operations active, and its measures effective. China, Wen said, is ready to enhance collaboration with Germany in developing new and renewable energy and maximizing energy efficiency.     China also will participate in related negotiations and work with other countries to help bring about positive results at the December UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Wen said.     Merkel said Germany is very satisfied with the development of China-Germany relations. Such a trend has helped advance the South-North dialogue and cooperation, push forward the development of multilateralism, and promote the resolution of global issues.     Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi decided to move the venue of G8 summit from the island of Sardinia to L'aquila, where an earthquake on April 6 killed 295 people and left over 60,000 people homeless.     The Italian government hopes the shift of the summit venue could attract more attention to the plight of the victims in L'aquila and help the devastated city's reconstruction.     Since the end of last year, President Hu has attended a series of major international conferences on the financial crisis and other major issues.     He participated in the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the first meeting of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) leaders in Russia's Ural city of Yekaterinburg in June.     He was present at the G20 financial summit in London in the beginning of April.     The Chinese president and other leaders from the G20 members also gathered in Washington for a summit on the financial crisis on Nov. 15 last year.     Days later, Hu flew after a Cuba visit to Peru to attend the Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Organization (APEC) on regional economic issues and the financial crisis.     Other Chinese leaders including Premier Wen Jiabao have also participated in several international conferences to seek joint actions with other countries to deal with the crisis.     Premier Wen stressed confidence, cooperation and responsibility as a key to overcoming the financial storm at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in the Swiss skiing resort of Davos in January.
