BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Some 64.15 million people travelled on China's roads on Saturday, the 22nd day of the Spring Festival traffic rush, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) said Sunday.This figure is a 7.8 percent increase compared to the corresponding day last year, as millions of people began to return to work as the one-week holiday neared its end, the MOT said in a statement on its website.The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, fell on Feb. 14 this year. It is the most important Chinese traditional festival for family reunions. BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- The outlook of China's steel industry will be better this year than 2009 as the impact of the stimulus package continues, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Saturday.A strong increase in new investment plans would help boost domestic demand for steel while improving external demand following world economic recovery would encourage steel exports, the MIIT said.The implementation of a proactive fiscal policy and moderately easy monetary policy injected ample liquidity into the market and provided the steel enterprises with easy access for fund, it said.However, excess capacity, still weak external demand and rising production costs would all impose pressure on the development of the industry, the ministry said.China's crude steel production capacity was forecast at 700 million tonnes at the end of 2009, compared with 660 million tonnes at the end of 2008.In 2009, China's steel output rose 13.5 percent to 567.84 million tonnes. Its 68 large and medium sized iron and steel companies reaped 55.39 billion yuan (8.12 billion U.S. dollars) in profit in 2009, down 31.43 percent from a year earlier.

 BEIJING, March 22 -- Followings are regions set to be new driving force for China's economy.Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regionXinjiang literally means "New Frontier", and it is promising to be a new economic frontier in China's northwestern areas. Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has abundant oil reserves and it is the largest natural gas-producing region in China. An economic development plan for Xinjiang is expected to come out soon. It will emphasize use of Xinjiang's advantageous resources, including petrochemicals, coal, non-ferrous metals and agriculture. The investment is likely to rise steadily over the next three years, driven by increased financial support from central government and neighboring provinces, and large-scale investment for key projects from State-owned companies. The rising tourism industry will also be a contributor to Xinjiang's economic growth.Tibet autonomous regionThe Tibet autonomous region is becoming another hotspot in China's regional economic development. The plateau region was traditionally dependent on farming and herding. Recently Tibet laid out a plan to explore its mineral resources, while pledging to stick to rational exploitation and minimizing the damage to the natural environment. The government announced plans to achieve "leapfrog development" in Tibet in January, including building the region into a "strategic reserve of natural resources" with the aim of reducing poverty among the Tibetan people. Tibet has more than 3,000 proven mineral reserves and it has China's biggest proven chromium and copper deposits. According to the plan, mineral resources will contribute at least 30 percent to the regional GDP over the next 10 years. Tourism will continue to play a significant role in supporting the economy.

KUNMING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- An alleged ringleader and his 32 gang members stood trial Wednesday on gang-related charges in southwest China's Yunnan Province.Shen Chao, the alleged ringleader, faces seven charges, including organizing and leading a criminal gang, gambling, murder, intentionally injuring people, causing social disturbance, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.Shen denied all the charges except for gambling, saying that he was "too busy investing in coal mines in Shaotong city to commit the crimes (he is charged with)."Prosecutors identified Shen Chao as the ringleader, Shen Yang, Zhang Ning, Shen Hang and Yao Shunlin as the core members.The trial would last two days in Kunming Municipal Intermediate People's Court.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday urged for pushing forward mainland-Taiwan relations steadily, saying the two sides are facing a grand opportunity for the development of ties.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the call when attending a panel discussion of the annual session of the National People's Congress."The relations across the Taiwan Strait saw comprehensive improvement and development over the past year, and we are now facing a grand opportunity to develop the ties," Jia told NPC deputies of the delegation representing Taiwan."It's imperative to do well the work concerning Taiwan in a concrete and effective manner and steadily push forward cross-Strait relations," Jia said."We must stick to the principle that the mainland and Taiwan both belong to one China, consolidate the political foundation for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and strengthen political trust between the two sides," Jia said.Jia, also Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, also urged the two sides to deepen their economic cooperation and establish a long-term mechanism for mutual development and benefit.Cultural and educational exchanges should be vigorously promoted to deepen the sense of national and cultural identity between compatriots across the strait, Jia said.

BRUSSELS, March 22 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes the latest document issued by the European Union (EU) on climate change, but insists that the EU should raise its emission cut target to 30 percent by 2020, a visiting Chinese official said on Monday.Su Wei,chief negotiator of China for climate change talks in Copenhagen, told a press briefing here that China welcomed the communication the EU issued in earlier March,which elaborated the bloc's standpoints on climate change for the first time following the Copenhagen talks in December."China welcomed in general the EU's latest positions," which among others reaffirmed the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" undertaken by developing and developed countries in dealing with climate change, the Chinese official said.In the communication issued on March 9, the EU expresses its willingness to continue to play a leading role in fighting against climate change and reaffirms its commitment to reduce its greenhouse gases emissions by 20 percent by 2020 and to increase this reduction to 30 percent if "the conditions are right."However, Su told reporters that EU should and could raise its emission cut target to 30 percent by 2020 on the basis of 1990 if the bloc wanted to play a leading role in dealing with climate change.The move would put more pressure on the United States to put forward ambitious goals, the chief negotiator said.Su said he was visiting the EU headquarters with a Chinese delegation led by Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, to exchange views with his EU counterparts on climate change.China and the EU shared many common goals and interests, the two sides should work together to boost international negotiations on climate change, he said.World leaders are scheduled to meet later this year in the Mexican resort town of Cancun for another go at inking a legally- binding global accord on emission reductions after 2012.Su said that China hoped the meeting in Cancun can achieve positive and meaningful results and make further progress on the basis of the Copenhagen talks.
