BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's rural areas have the biggest potential in boosting domestic demand, said Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan during visits to the countryside concluded on Tuesday.     China should "especially place priority on tapping the rural market and developing the countryside" when spreading global financial crisis blunted the country's economic growth, said Wang.     He made the remarks when visiting towns, rural stores and farmers in central China's Henan Province on Monday and Tuesday.     More chain stores should be set up in the countryside to facilitate rural consumption, Wang said.     He also urged local officials to well implement policies to subsidize farmers' purchase of home appliances.     Financial institutions should develop more services targeting the need of farmers and rural enterprises, he said.     In its latest effort to boost rural consumption, China has decided to roll out a 13-percent subsidy nationwide for farmers who buy home appliances, starting from Feb. 1.     China has announced a 4 trillion-yuan (586 billion U.S. dollars) fiscal package to stimulate domestic demand.

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Ministry has demanded that the U.S. Embassy to China facilitate travel for the families of those killed and injured in Friday's tour bus crash near the Hoover Dam in Arizona. In a statement released Sunday, the ministry confirmed that six Chinese nationals died and nine were injured, including one from Hong Kong.     The Chinese Embassy in the United States and Consulate General in Los Angeles immediately dispatched a team assist U.S. authorities with treating the injured and investigating the accident. UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is actively promoting the relief of tension in Gaza, and China is ready to work with the international community to bring all the parties concerned back to the negotiation table at an early date in a bid to achieve the peaceful, just and durable settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, a Chinese envoy said here Tuesday.     Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement as he was speaking at the closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the Gaza conflict, which has left more than 900 Palestinians killed and 4,000 others injured.     Zhang told the Security Council that the Chinese special envoy on the Middle East issue, Sun Bigan, began his visit to Egypt, Israel and Palestine on Sunday for mediation for peace in the region.     China is gravely concerned about the growing escalation of tension in Gaza, and it is regrettable to see that the new Security Council resolution, adopted last Thursday to call for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, went unheeded by warring parties, he said.     At present, the top priority is to achieve the full implementation of the UN truce resolution -- the immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a halt to the firing of rockets into Israel by the armed Palestinian faction, and unimpeded access of Gaza to the humanitarian relief goods, he said.     At the Tuesday council meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed 15 council members on his upcoming visit to the Middle East, which will take him to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait. 

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan on Wednesday signed more than 10 deals ranging from trade and minerals to agriculture and satellites.     The package of agreements came out of a two-hour summit at Beijing's Great Hall of the People as China rolled out the red carpet for Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, who is on his first state visit to the country since taking office in September. Zardari was welcomed by President Hu Jintao and received a 21-gun military salute at the Tian'anmen Square, festooned with the national flags of China and Pakistan.     During the meeting, Hu reviewed the close bilateral ties, particularly the days of the Bhutto family.     "Your entire family are old friends of the Chinese people," Hu told Zardari. "We will never forget the outstanding contribution Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had made to boosting ties with China." "China and Pakistan should vigorously boost border trade so as to bring more substantive benefits to their citizens."     Zardari said the two should carry out big projects and work more closely in infrastructure, transport, environmental protection and finance, among others.     The two leaders agreed to step up people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, health and journalism.     Hu thanked Pakistan for its support on issues concerning Taiwan and Tibet. He also appreciated Pakistani efforts in backing Beijing's hosting of the Olympic Games.     Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan's adherence to the one-China policy and support of China's peaceful reunification,     They also agreed on enhancing coordination and collaboration on international and regional issues, cooperating on addressing global challenges and ensuring peace, stability and development in the world.     As part of his four-day trip, Zardari is also scheduled to meet with other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and top advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday.
