BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said here Thursday that Japan's move to build facilities on the Okinotori atoll will not change its legal status, as Japan is seeking vast economic interests at the nearby southern Pacific.     According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLS), and based on the natural and geographic situation of the Okinotori atoll, neither exclusive economic zones nor continental shelves should be claimed on it, Spokesperson Jiang Yutold a regular press briefing.     Japan has asked the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to recognize the extended area around the so-called "Okinotori island," 1,740 km south of Tokyo, as its continental shelf, which would enable it to claim a vast surrounding area as an exclusive economic zone.     According to Article 121 of the UNCLS, rocks that cannot sustain human habitation or an economic life of their own shall have no exclusive economic zone or continental shelf.     According to Japanese media report, the Japanese government plans to build a port and conduct mineral explorations on the atoll in 2010.     "Building facilities on it would not change the atoll's legal status," Jiang said.     Such a bid did not conform to the international laws of the sea and was against the interests of the international community, she said.

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Xiao Wu, now a student at Oxford University, recalls her life in Britain started off with "depression" six years ago in a renowned board school.     Fresh from China, the reality of the new country failed to meet her expectations.     "I was disappointed to find many of my British classmates just spent plenty of time on parties, instead of study," Xiao Wu says, a straight-A student in China, who struck her teachers and peers as "extraordinarily diligent."     It has taken her long to come to terms with the fact that British students just could be academically excellent as well without "excess hardworking" that was often held dear by their Chinese peers, she says.     "It seems that they could better balance school work and entertainment than most of us," she says.     But for younger Chinese, such culture shock is much less likely as they increasingly share a common international culture and make friends abroad.     Ding Kaiyan, 15, recalls making friends with Ayumi Saito during the latter's school excursion in China in August, 2008.     "We are both veteran players of Popcart (a popular racing game designed in South Korea), fans of NEWS (a Japanese boy band), and lovers of literature," she says. "Although I had not fully mastered Japanese, we hit it off at our first meeting."     One year later, Ding called on Ayumi Saito in Japan's Toyama Prefecture. Before her trip, Ding had glimpsed Japanese pop culture and customs through her Japanese teacher, Matsushita Hiroshi, and on the Internet.     Ding is one of dozens of students at the Northeast Yucai School, in the northeastern Liaoning Province, who have traveled to Japan to meet children their own age over the past six years.     "Globalization is a buzzword for scholars, but for children it just means how they live their lives," said Professor Shi Jinghuan, executive dean of the Institute of Education of the Tsinghua University.     Their favorite foods, clothes and pop stars and cartoon characters can come from any corner of the world, and many of them start to speak English at kindergarten, she says. BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke said here Monday clean energy technology is one of the most beneficial areas for U.S.-China cooperation and also the only way for the two countries to keep sustained economic growth and combat global climate change.     Locke, who accompanied U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to China, made the remarks at the Sino-U.S. clean energy round table conference held here Monday.     It has been Locke's third trip to China since becoming Commerce Secretary in March.     "The United States and China have the power and indeed an obligation to alter history for the benefit of all people on the planet," he said.     As the world's most productive and innovative economies, the U.S. and China are uniquely positioned to create the solar, wind, biofuel and renewable technologies that the world wants and needs, Locke said.     "We can do it by making clean energy the prime engine of the economic growth in the 21st century," he said.     Locke said he plans to lead an energy and trade mission to China next March, which would include U.S. firms from new energy technology sectors and make stops in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities.     U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu also attended the conference, who expressed optimism about U.S.-China cooperation in the deployment and development of clean energy technology.     The conference was co-hosted by China's State Energy Bureau, U.S. Department of Commerce and Department of Energy, in a bid to advance mutual pragmatic cooperation in clean energy and promote the development of clean energy technology and industry.
