TAIPEI, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said Monday that negotiating and signing a wide-ranging economic pact with the Chinese mainland was "absolutely necessary" and "needs to be done quickly."Ma made the remarks here when attending a gathering for Taiwan business people with business on the mainland. BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- A report by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said the overall situation of China's iron and steel industry will be better than last year, thanks to the steady momentum of economic recovery.The report said four factors will have positive impact on the iron and steel industry: increased government investment, a clear recovery of global economy, ample money supply in the market and a series of upcoming government policies aimed at promoting healthy development of the iron and steel industry.However, the ministry held that the foundation of the current economic recovery still needs to be consolidated and external demand still falls short, creating fairly big difficulties for the operation of the iron and steel industry.The report said in 2010 iron and steel companies must be prepared to face the challenges of over supply, sluggish international market and rising production cost.In 2009, China's 68 large and medium sized iron and steel companies made 55.39 billion yuan (8.12 billion U.S. dollars) in profit, down 31.43 percent year on year.

ABU DHABI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 World Expo, slated for May 1 to Oct. 31 in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, will provide an opportunity for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China to enhance their mutual understanding, officials said Wednesday.The UAE is the first country to complete the "base-build" of its own pavilion at the Expo, with the exception of China's national pavilion, the state news agency WAM reported.The UAE pavilion will carry the Gulf nation's message to the people of China and many other countries, Saqr Ghobash, chairman of the National Media Council that is coordinating the project, was quoted as saying."We are particularly focused on the theme of Expo 2010 -- ' Better City Better Life' -- because we recognize that this resonates very deeply with the UAE's own experience," he said.Ghobash added that the UAE government and people have made huge strides towards creating a modern society that respects its past whilst embracing the present."We have much to share with our friends and partners in other countries. BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- China promulgated a regulation Monday requiring meteorological authorities to conduct research on meteorological disasters, in an effort to reduce the damage from natural disasters like sand storms, blizzards, droughts, typhoons and icy weather.The Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council, the Cabinet, said Tuesday in a statement the regulation is designed to better protect people's lives and properties.The regulation, which takes effect April 1, requires meteorological authorities above the county level to conduct research on the frequency, intensity, and impact of meteorological disasters, and to set up a database to better evaluate risks.Schools are asked to teach students how to protect themselves and rescue others during natural disasters under the guidance of educational or meteorological authorities.The regulation also specifies the media's role in the event of meteorological disasters.Media organizations are responsible for the release of disaster warnings and alerts given by the local meteorological centers, the regulation says.Media organizations that fail in their responsibilities, release false information, or release alerts without authorization face fines of up to 50,000 yuan (about 7,322 U.S. dollars), according to the regulation.Media groups must cover the occurrence and development of disasters and emergency situations "timely and correctly", it reads.China is one of the countries most susceptible to natural disasters and 70 percent of disasters occurring in China are meteorological ones, according to the statement.

HONG KONG, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The relationship between the United States and China has been growing despite potential friction over trade and other issues, said Clark T. Randt Jr., former U.S. ambassador to China, at a lecture in Hong Kong on Friday.Randt said the potential trade friction, which should not be surprising given the dire economic situation and the upcoming mid- term elections in the United States, was more likely to come from the Congress rather than the administration.Randt, who had been U.S. ambassador to China from July 2001 to January 2009, said it was not surprising that the two countries should have disagreements given the differences in history, culture and the values."But the important thing is to keep in mind ... the awareness on both sides of the very important strategic interests we share," he added.The leaders in both Washington and Beijing understand that the two countries share strategic interests on many topics, Randt said, adding that he was "sure that the United States policy towards China has not changed.""More and more Americans are trying to know China, though the Chinese people still know the United States better than the Americans know China.
