NANJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the world's major reserve currency will maintain stable, said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao here Sunday when meeting with three Euro Group leaders.     He was speaking with Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and European Union Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia ahead of the 12th EU-China summit.     China has maintained the stability of the exchange rate of the Renminbi (RMB), making an important contribution to global financial stability and economic development, he said.     He said China will continue to enhance the flexibility of the RMB exchange rate, acting on its own initiative and in a controllable and gradual manner, and keep it basically stable at reasonable, balanced levels.     Juncker said the EU is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China on monetary policies.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States singed a joint statement here Tuesday after talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, agreeing that "the transition to a green and low-carbon economy is essential."     Both China and the United States believed the clean energy industry will provide vast opportunities for citizens of both countries in the years ahead, said the statement signed during Obama' s first visit to China since taking office in January.     According to the statement, the two sides welcomed significant steps forward to advance policy dialogue and practical cooperation on climate change, energy and the environment, building on the China-U.S. Memorandum of Understanding to Enhance Cooperation on Climate Change, Energy and Environment announced at the first round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues in July and formally signed during Obama' s visit.     The statement said both sides recognized the importance of the Ten Year Framework on Energy and Environment Cooperation (TYF) and are committed to strengthening cooperation in promoting clean air, water, transportation, electricity, and resources conservation.     Through a new China-U.S. Energy Efficiency Action Plan under the TYF, both countries "will work together to achieve cost-effective energy efficiency improvement in industry, buildings and consumer products through technical cooperation, demonstration and policy exchanges," said the statement.     Noting both countries' significant investment in energy efficiency, the two Presidents underscored the enormous opportunities to create jobs and enhance economic growth brought by energy savings.     The two countries welcomed the signing of the Protocol Between the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Energy Administration of the People's Republic of China and the Department of Energy of the United States of America on a Clean Energy Research Center, according to the document.     The Center will facilitate joint research and development on clean energy by scientists and engineers from both countries. It will have one headquarters in each country, with public and private funding of at least 150 million U.S. dollars over five years split evenly between the two countries. Priority topics to be addressed will include energy efficiency in buildings, clean coal (including carbon capture and sequestration), and clean vehicles.     The two sides welcomed the launch of China-U.S. Electric Vehicles Initiative designed to put millions of electric vehicles on the roads of both countries in the years ahead, the statement said.     Building on significant investments in electric vehicles in both the United States and China, the two governments announced a program of joint demonstration projects in more than a dozen cities, along with work to develop common technical standards to facilitate rapid scale-up of the industry, the statement said, adding that the two sides agreed that their countries share a strong common interest in the rapid deployment of clean vehicles.     About 21st century coal technologies, the two countries agreed to promote cooperation on large-scale carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) demonstrations projects and begin work immediately on the development, deployment, diffusion and transfer of CCS technology. The two sides welcomed recent agreements between Chinese and U.S. companies, universities and research institutions to cooperate on CCS and more efficient coal technologies.     With regard to joint efforts on tackling the climate change, the two sides welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Development and Reform Commission of China and Environmental Protection Agency of the United States to Build Capacity to Address Climate Change.     The statement said the two sides welcomed the launch of a China-U.S. Renewable Energy Partnership, through which the two countries will chart a pathway to wide-scale deployment of wind, solar, advanced bio-fuels and a modern electric power grid in both countries and cooperate in designing and implementing the policy and technical tools necessary to make that vision possible.     Shared confidence on the bilateral cooperation in this field was expressed by the statement, which said that given the combined market size of the two countries, accelerated deployment of renewable energy in China and the United States can significantly reduce the cost of these technologies globally.     On the promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the two sides agreed to consult with one another in order to explore such approaches--including assurance of fuel supply and cradle-to-grave nuclear fuel management so that countries can access peaceful nuclear power while minimizing the risks of proliferation.

FUKUOKA, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Wednesday his visit to Japan had "a positive result" and "achieved what he had expected."     Xi made the remarks before leaving the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka, the last stop of his Japan visit, for South Korea to continue his four-country Asia tour.     During a meeting with Fukuoka Prefecture Governor Wataru Aso, Xi said he held fruitful talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in Tokyo and exchanged views with representatives of all Japanese circles. BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday called on health authorities to ensure safety in the production, storage, transportation, and inoculation process of the vaccines against A/H1N1 influenza, for the health of the public.     Li made the remarks when visiting the Beijing-based National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, where the country's self-developed vaccines against the A/H1N1 flu are tested. CHANGSHA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun has called on publicity departments and media organizations to "vigorously" disseminate the core values of socialist China and inspire the public to achieve the Party's development goals.     Li, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said during his inspection tour to Hunan Province that China's achievements in the reform and opening up and modernization cause should be well presented, as well as the country's successful experience in dealing with the financial crisis.     Li's five-day tour ended Wednesday, during which he urged publicity departments and news media to "spread China's practices in keeping economic development steady and relatively fast amid the international financial crisis."

HUA HIN, Thailand, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd called here on Saturday for an early signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two Asia-Pacific major economies. "The mutual-respect, mutual-trust and cooperation between China and Australia, both as big countries in the Asia-Pacific region, will not only yield tangible benefits for the two nations, but also have a positive impact on a larger scale," Wen said in talks with Rudd on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits.     The key to maintaining a sound and steady development of bilateral ties lies in their respect for and care about each other's core interests and major concerns, Wen said, pledging to work together with Australia to boost their ties. SANAA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese military vessel arrived in the Aden port Saturday on a goodwill official visit for the coming several days, official SABA news agency reported.     The Chinese military vessel, named Chan Dokouh, is affiliated with the Chinese naval fleet now cruising in the international waters, SANA said.     The military ship and its crew were received by a number of senior Yemeni military and security officials at the southern military naval base in Aden, said the report.     The visit of the Chinese military vessel to Aden port came as part of the joint bilateral cooperation between Yemen and China, particularly in fighting terrorism, counter-smuggling, combating piracy and ensuring safety of navigation through international waterways, added the report.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 -- Shanghai has set a GDP growth rate target for the year of more than 8 percent, almost the same as 2009's economic development rate.     Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng yesterday announced the target at a one-day session of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China.     He added the growth rate of value-added output from the service industry should be much higher than the GDP rate.     The city didn't set a higher GDP goal because it wanted to put more effort into restructuring the economy than simply seeking more GDP growth, Yu told the meeting.     The city's GDP growth was estimated to be more than 8 percent last year, a little lower than the average national level. Total retail sales of consumer goods rose by about 14 percent and growth of fixed assets investment was around 10 percent in 2009.     Yu said the targeted rate was a suitable development speed for Shanghai, which was hit by the global financial crisis during its economic restructure transition.     He told the session that the World Expo 2010 Shanghai was the most important task for the government this year.     It requires not only coordination of all districts and departments but also active participation and devotion by citizens, he said.     "We should spare no efforts to ensure a successful, wonderful and unforgettable Expo," he said.     "We should make full use of the opportunity to stimulate investment and consumption, enhance friendly cooperation with the world and build a city with international influence."     Yu emphasized the importance of security during Expo. He requested government officials to strengthen anti-terrorism efforts, guarantee food and drug safety and quality, and keep monitoring and preventing public health events, such as outbursts of swine flu.     To enhance transport during Expo, the government will continue a series of infrastructure works. More Metro lines and cross-river projects will be completed this year.     Construction of the Bund, Shanghai-Nanjing inter-city railway and the Hongqiao transport hub are planned to be finished this year.     Yu stressed that government officials should consider people's interests at all time and listen to their advices. He said the government should reduce impact on life during Expo as much as possible.     Also, Yu said regulation and control in the real estate market will be improved to help it develop in a healthy and sustainable way. And 500,000 new jobs will be created to keep the unemployment rate around 4.5 percent.

TAIPEI, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Kuomintang (KMT) Party won 12 county and city chief seats in Taiwan's local elections Saturday, while the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) landed four seats, voting results showed.     The KMT won 289 county and city lawmaker seats whereas the DPP won 128. Candidates with no party affiliations and those who did not run in the election through political parties won 170 seats.     The KMT also won a majority of 121 seats in the election of township chiefs, as opposed to the DPP's 34 seats.     The voting, also known as "three-in-one elections," lasted from8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
