BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Nov. 15 to 18 are three usually unremarkable days on the calendar but this year they attracted worldwide attention as U.S. President Barack Obama paid his first state visit to China. Obama arrived in China at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao with the international focus on how the two countries would address a raft of global issues. When he left, analysts saw a new direction for developing the China-U.S. relationship, which had major significance, and believed the summit had rendered bilateral relations stronger.     Hu and Obama reiterated in the China-U.S. Joint Statement that both sides were committed to building a "positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century" and promised to take concrete action to build a partnership to jointly cope with common challenges. Challenges like climate change, nuclear proliferation, or economic recovery could never be met with a single hand.     "That's why the United States welcomes China's efforts in playing a greater role on the world stage, a role in which a growing economy is joined by growing responsibilities."     Jin Canrong, deputy dean of the International Studies School at China's Renmin University, told Xinhua the new goal for the China-U.S. relationship was to build a partnership to jointly cope with common challenges that was quite positive and significant.     Fu Mengzi, director of the Institute of American Studies under the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, told Xinhua the partnership to combat common challenges had positive and new meanings.     David Shambaugh, a George Washington University professor and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said the outcome of the summit "reflects the 30 years of hard work in building the relationship, as well as the growing strategic trust between the two sides."     He said both sides were actively committed to develop a "positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century," and a joint statement issued after the meeting between the two presidents may help take China-U.S. relations into a "totally new and positive era."     FACING GLOBAL CHALLENGES TOGETHER     As one of the topics of the meeting between Hu and Obama, facing global challenges together has obtained great attention.     Fu said the challenges not only included those related to both parties, but also those concerned with global interests.     The China-U.S. Joint Statement stressed that, with global challenges increasing, the interdependence of all countries in the world had deepened and their need for peace, development and cooperation had increased.     On numerous critical issues concerned with global stability and prosperity, China and the United States have a broader basis for cooperation and shoulder more important common responsibilities.     The two countries should further enhance coordination and cooperation, jointly cope with common challenges and make efforts to promote peace, security and prosperity in the world.     Jin said focusing on global issues during the meeting demonstrated the global characteristic of China-U.S. relationship that had gone far beyond bilateral ties. Both parties were seeking more areas for cooperation, he said.     Shambaugh told Xinhua the joint statement released on Nov. 17 was an extremely positive document -- filled with countless examples of tangible Sino-American cooperation on a large range of bilateral, regional, and global issues.     Mainichi Shimbun, a major daily in Japan, reported that both parties agreed on deepening China-U.S. relations in a new era, which symbolized the bilateral ties had entered a new phase of development.     Obama said at the press conference that the United States welcomed China as a "strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations." This gave the impression that both countries had entered a new era of cooperation on global issues, the newspaper said.     Japan's Kyodo News reported that the Chinese and U.S. presidents agreed to cooperate on a plethora of critical issues, including climate change and nuclear non-proliferation.     Differences on issues such as human rights and trade imbalances were not obvious, which demonstrated that both sides had put intensifying bilateral ties as a priority, the news agency said. 　　CONSOLIDATING FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT     During his talks with Obama, President Hu made five proposals on further advancing China-U.S. relations, of which the top priority was that the two countries should continue to increase strategic mutual trust.     Trust and cooperation is the only way to deal with country-to-country relations in the new era, Hu said, proposing that both sides view the world and each other and their relations from a new perspective.     The two leaders also believed that to nurture and deepen bilateral strategic trust was essential to China-U.S. relations in the new era. As Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said, the respect for each other's core interests is the "key" to their relations.     Fu told Xinhua China-U.S. relations had been closely connected with a solid foundation based on common interests.     "There's no reason for the two countries to stray away from the status quo," Fu said, adding that a new China-U.S. joint statement issued following the summit stressed the will to enhance strategic mutual trust.     French newspaper Le Figaro said China's Hu welcomed a long-term strategic relationship and Obama highlighted the great importance of the bilateral relations for the future development of both countries.     Observers said Obama's visit to China could demonstrate an upgraded foundation for bilateral relations.     This was echoed by Shambaugh, who said the meeting between the two leaders was warm and sincere, showing an increasing strategic trust between China and the United States.     Agreements between the two countries would bring more peace and stability to the Asia Pacific region as well as the rest of the world, he added.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States can take active steps to eliminate discriminatory measures towards Chinese poultry products, said Yao Jian, spokesman of China's Ministry of Commerce, on Friday.     Yao made the remarks in a comment on the ministry's official website on the 2010 Agriculture Appropriations Bill, which has modified the stance towards Chinese poultry imports, compared to that in the Omnibus Appropriations Act 2009.     "We welcome the changes," Yao said.     He pointed out, however, there are still restrictions against Chinese poultry products in the new bill.     "China is evaluating whether the restrictions are totally in line with the non-discrimination principle of the World Trade Organization and other relevant regulations," Yao said.     "China's poultry products are safe and reliable... We hope the United States can stand on the footing of maintaining mutual benefit in China-U.S. trade and take active steps to eliminate discriminatory measures and normalize bilateral poultry trade at an early date," Yao said.     Yao hoped that the U.S. could modify relevant regulations to resume poultry imports from China.     The U.S. House of Representatives passed the 410-billion-U.S.-dollar Omnibus Appropriations Act 2009 in February, which said "none of the funds made available in this Actmay be used to establish or implement a rule allowing poultry products to be imported into the United States from the People's Republic of China."

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke said here Monday clean energy technology is one of the most beneficial areas for U.S.-China cooperation and also the only way for the two countries to keep sustained economic growth and combat global climate change.     Locke, who accompanied U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to China, made the remarks at the Sino-U.S. clean energy round table conference held here Monday.     It has been Locke's third trip to China since becoming Commerce Secretary in March.     "The United States and China have the power and indeed an obligation to alter history for the benefit of all people on the planet," he said.     As the world's most productive and innovative economies, the U.S. and China are uniquely positioned to create the solar, wind, biofuel and renewable technologies that the world wants and needs, Locke said.     "We can do it by making clean energy the prime engine of the economic growth in the 21st century," he said.     Locke said he plans to lead an energy and trade mission to China next March, which would include U.S. firms from new energy technology sectors and make stops in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities.     U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu also attended the conference, who expressed optimism about U.S.-China cooperation in the deployment and development of clean energy technology.     The conference was co-hosted by China's State Energy Bureau, U.S. Department of Commerce and Department of Energy, in a bid to advance mutual pragmatic cooperation in clean energy and promote the development of clean energy technology and industry.

Nathan, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Senior Minister Gok Chok Tong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, and exchanged profound views with them on China-Singapore relations, on international and regional issues of common concern, and reached consensus on a number of issues.     President Hu put forward a six-point proposal for deepening the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. The proposal includes maintaining high-level exchanges, bringing into full play the bilateral cooperation mechanism, bettering the intergovernmental flagship projects of the Suzhou Industrial Park and the Tianjin Ecological Area, and strengthening defensive security and multilateral cooperation.     The Chinese president announced in Singapore that to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore next year, China will provide Singapore with a pair of giant pandas for cooperative research. The announcement was warmly applauded by the Singaporean people who take this move as a symbol of the China-Singapore friendship.     Singaporean leaders spoke highly of the progress achieved in various cooperation fields. The two sides believed that cooperation was well conducted in such important chosen fields as high-tech, in facilitating Chinese enterprises to "go global", and in the training of human resources. The Suzhou Industrial Park has achieved outstanding progress in the past 15 years.     PROPOSAL FOR TACKLING FINANCIAL CRISIS     During his visits to Malaysia and Singapore, Hu gave a comprehensive and detailed account of the policies and measures China has adopted to fight the international financial crisis and the successes achieved in this regard.     The leaders of Malaysia and Singapore spoke highly of the positive and constructive role China has played in the fight against the financial crisis in Asia and the whole world and they were convinced that China would continue to play an important role in the "post-crisis" era.     A stable, dynamic and prosperous Chinese economy would contribute greatly to economic recovery in Asia and the world at large, they agreed.     On the issue of promoting sustained growth, Hu said the profound impact of the financial crisis is still evident and the world economic upturn is not yet firmly established. A comprehensive world economic recovery still faces many uncertainties and destabilizing factors, the president said.     In addition, the Doha Round negotiations have been fraught with difficulties and twists and turns, and global issues have become more pronounced. These are all daunting challenges to the full recovery and long-term growth of the world economy, including in the Asia-Pacific region, he said.     At this critical juncture, "we should all the more get united, follow the principle of openness, cooperation and mutual benefit, strengthen coordination and work together to secure the momentum of world economic recovery and promote balanced and orderly economic growth," said the Chinese president.     SUPPORT FOR SOUND DEVELOPMENT OF MULTILATERAL TRADING SYSTEM     Hu expounded on China's position on opposing trade protectionism and supporting the multilateral trading system.     He said the APEC member economies should advance the World Trade Organization's Doha Round negotiations on the basis of locking in the existing achievements and respecting the Doha mandate.     "We are ready to speed up the settlement of the remaining issues and work for comprehensive and balanced outcomes at the negotiations at an early date in order to achieve the goals of the development round," Hu said.     "We must be committed to our promises, strongly oppose trade protectionism in all its manifestations, be vigilant against and correct the 'invisible' protectionism acts in various forms, reduce and eliminate trade barriers, and solve trade disputes through dialogue and coordination, thus creating favorable conditions for full recovery and long-term development of world economy," Hu said.     PROMOTION OF APEC REGIONAL COOPERATION TO MAKE NEW ACHIEVEMENTS     In his address at the two-day APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, President Hu called on the APEC to reform and improve itself to raise the efficiency of cooperation so as to keep advancing with the changing times.     Also, the APEC should focus more on its unique strengths, continue to promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, scale up input and promote even greater achievements in economic and technical cooperation, and continue to increase its institutional dynamism through reform and innovation, Hu said.     To promote APEC economic and technical cooperation, he said, the Chinese government will allocate 10 million U.S. dollars for the establishment of the China-APEC Cooperation Fund to encourage and support participation by relevant Chinese departments and businesses in APEC economic and technical cooperation.     The Chinese president also called on all parties to take an active part in the Fifth APEC Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting in 2010 and continuously support and take part in activities of the Asia-Pacific Network on Forest Rehabilitation and Sustainable Management. His proposal won high appraisal and was warmly applauded by the paticipating leaders.     PROMOTION OF SOLUTION OF GLOBAL ISSUES TO MAKE NEW PROGRESS     The international community is facing severe challenges of climate change, which concerns human survival and development, Hu said.     The international community has actively taken steps to tackle climate change despite the existence of some difficulties in the negotiation process, he said, adding that the world should be full of confidence, redouble efforts, and strive to overcome difficulties in this regard to achieve positive results.     Hu said the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol have laid the legal foundation for the international community to collaborate on addressing climate change and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities has already become a universally accepted and basic principle for tackling climate change.     Also, the "Bali Roadmap" has made clear the requirements and orientation of international cooperation on climate change, he added.     All parties concerned should abide by the above principle and requirements, fully demonstrate their political will, turn their political will into real action to push forward the process of relevant talks and work to realize the goal of strengthening the implementation of the UNFCCC in a comprehensive and sustainable way, the Chinese president said.     In recent years, international talks on implementing the "Bali Roadmap" had made progress and reached consensus on a number of aspects, he said, calling on the international community to build on the consensus and progress and work to reach further consensus, and push for a positive outcome of the Copenhagen climate talks. TAIPEI, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), has called for calm response to the upcoming cross-Strait talks.     The SEF and the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) plan to hold new round of talks in Taiwan's Taichung city on Dec. 22.     Chiang said issues to be discussed during the talks included labor cooperation in the fishing industry, cooperation in inspection and quarantine of agricultural products and standard measurement authentication and avoidance of double taxation.     Those issues were closely related to the health and benefits of people across the Strait, he said, adding that he hoped agreements could be reached to improve the foundation of cross-Strait relations.     It is the fourth round of talks since the SEF and the ARATS resumed negotiations in June last year following a 10-year suspension.

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Qingdao Haier Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese household electric appliance producer, announced Thursday evening that its net profit in the third quarter rose 48.88 percent year on year to 300.7 million yuan (44.03 million U.S. dollars).     Its net profit in the first three quarters increased 28.7 percent from a year earlier to 966.4 million yuan, the firm said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.     The eastern Shandong Province-based company attributed the net profit hike to reduced inventory and improved assets quality.     Equities of the Shanghai-listed firm added 1.28 percent to 18.17 yuan per share Thursday.

TAICHUNG, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Negotiators of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan ended a new round of talks Tuesday as the two sides agreed to cooperate in farm produce quarantine and cross-Strait employment of fishermen, as well as to deal with different product quality standards.     In an evening banquet held by the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) Tuesday, ARATS president Chen Yunlin expressed his gratitude to the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) and to those in Taiwan who had contributed to the ARATS-SEF meeting.     The fruitful meetings between the two organizations were made possible by both sides across the Taiwan Strait, Chen said.     He said the two sides should continue to contribute to the peaceful development of the cross-Strait ties despite all difficulties. "The only way to measure our efforts is whether the agreements really benefit people across the Taiwan Strait."     In the previous three rounds of talks since June 2008, the two sides reached nine agreements concerning transport, trade, tourism, cooperation in finance and fighting crime among other issues.     "We have done many things in the past one and half years that should have been done long before. We will work with our Taiwan counterparts to make sure the agreements are implemented and to close loopholes in them." Chen said.     Chiang Pin-kun said Taiwan and mainland must jointly tackle economic challenges, and the establishment of a cross-Strait economic framework should not be delayed.     He called on both sides to contribute to economic prosperity and development as well as long-term peace and stability.     The agreements reached at previous meetings between SEF and ARATS had brought substantial benefits for the normalization of cross-Strait communication and benefited people on both sides, he said.     However, there was room for improvement and both sides needed to carry out further negotiations, he said.     He called for both sides across the Taiwan Strait to continue efforts to push for the development of systematic talks and promote cross-Strait communication and cooperation.     The ARATS and SEF are expected to discuss future negotiations on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), although talks on the agreement were not on the agenda of this meeting.     The two sides reached a basic consensus on avoiding double taxation and strengthening taxation cooperation in a preparatory meeting Monday afternoon. BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin attended a symposium here on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising of two air carriers in Hong Kong in 1949.     On Nov. 9, 1949, a total of 12 aircraft from the carriers flew from Hong Kong to Beijing and Tianjin on the Chinese mainland during the uprising, a move embraced by the New China. Mao Zedong called it "a very patriotic action of great significance."     Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the precious spirit of the uprising should be inherited and promoted, to encourage all the Chinese to make unswerving contributions to the rejuvenation of the nation.

BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China would not let the yuan gain against the U.S. dollar in the short term, experts said here Thursday when commenting on the latest quarterly report of China's central bank.     People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, said Wednesday in its quarterly report of monetary policy, for the first time, that the bank would improve the mechanism of the exchange rate determination "based on international capital flows and movements in major currencies".     "The new wording showed that China would reduce speculation and strengthen risk control in the future, but it did not necessarily suggest a change in the yuan's exchange rate policy," said Tan Yaling, an expert with the China Institute for Financial Derivatives at Peking University.     "The future mechanism would reflect China's own concerns and status," she said.     China's foreign exchange reserves surged to a record 2.27 trillion U.S. dollars as of the third quarter of 2009, up 19.26 percent year on year, PBOC reported in September.     According to Yin Jianfeng, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), a government think tank, it is natural for the central bank to pay more attention to increasing international capital inflows.     "Excessive liquidities are pouring into China as the country is witnessing rapid recovery while the economic condition is still weak in the western world," he said.     Zuo Xiaolei, chief economist with Galaxy Securities, said the central bank's report indicated the government had raised concerns that such inflows would put China under huge external pressure for yuan appreciation.     Zuo predicted that as the U.S. dollar depreciates further, excessive liquidity will be a global issue in future, which would in turn pull up China's foreign reserve to a new level.     China has been facing calls to let its own currency gain against the dollar since it recovered quickly from the financial crisis, especially after it reported the positive economic data of last month, however, experts had expressed different opinions.     "Sudden upward movement in the yuan would slow China's economic growth when the country's exports just showed signs of recovery, "Tan said, "All in all, the exchange rate policy should not be subjected to other countries but serve our own economy."     Also, the pace of yuan's appreciation should be determined not only by the foreign trade surplus, according to Zuo Xiaolei.     The balance of China's internal development should also be taken into consideration, including the massive stimulus package and the accumulated liabilities of local governments, she said.     China's exports slid 13.8 percent year on year to 110.76 billion U.S. dollars in October, said the National Bureau of Statistics Wednesday. The decline rate was 1.4 percentage points lower than that of September.
