BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's premium income hit 936.09 billion yuan (137.1 billion U.S. dollars) in the first 10 months, according to China Insurance Regulatory Commission.     The figure represented an increase of 78 billon yuan, or 9.09 percent, over that in the first nine months.     During January to October period, premium of property and casualty insurance was 243.18 billion yuan, and 692.9 billion yuan, respectively.     Total asset of the country's insurance sector stood at 3.83 trillion yuan by the end of October.

BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China will, without any doubt, be able to achieve the 8 percent growth in gross domestic product (GDP) this year, a senior Chinese economist said Sunday.     Yao Jingyuan, chief economist with the National Bureau of Statistics, made the remarks at a fortune forum in Beijing.     However he warned that the Chinese economy will still face two major problems next year: slumping overseas market demand and weak driving force on domestic market.     Chinese economy rose 7.7 percent in the first three quarters, driven mainly by investment and consumption, but brought down by exports, Yao said.     He stressed more efforts should be made on structural adjustment to shift dependence on the industrial growth to the comprehensive development of the agricultural, industrial and service sectors.     Yao highlighted the importance to raise people's incomes, add investment on livelihood projects and give full play to the role of consumption to boost economy.     Meanwhile, China should turn its economic growth dependence from resources-intensive consumption to technology renovation, Yao said.

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday held a telephone conversation with his Ethiopian counterpart Meles Zenawi on relations and major international issues of common concern.     The two leaders pledged to work together to push forward the new type of strategic partnership between China and Africa.     They also exchanged views on China-Africa cooperation, China-Ethiopia relations and climate change.

FUZHOU, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) will hold talks in Taiwan's Taichung on Dec. 22, according to Thursday's preparatory meeting.     The two organizations are authorized by authorities in the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait issues.     According to a preliminary agreement, ARATS President Chen Yunlin and SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung will meet for the fourth round of talks since they resumed negotiations in June last year following a 10-year suspension.     Zheng Lizhong, standing vice president of the ARATS, and Kao Kung-lian, vice chairman and secretary general of the SEF, decided the ARATS delegation would visit the island between Dec. 21 and 25.     The agenda was agreed on during the preparatory meeting in Fuzhou, capital of southeastern Fujian Province, which faces Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait.     The agenda includes discussion of labor cooperation in the fishing industry, cooperation in the fields of inspection and quarantine of agricultural products and standard measurement authentication, avoidance of double taxation and boosting taxation cooperation.     The two organizations are scheduled to hold a symposium on Dec.23 to introduce the mainland investment to the island.     The ARATS delegation will also tour the Taichung City, the surrounding area and the Sun Moon Lake, and leave the island at noon of Dec. 25.     Zheng said talks between the ARATS and the SEF, which negotiate issues deeply concerned by people of both sides, were "remarkable symbolization of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."     He said it shows the two organizations respect each other and "treat each other as equals" in promoting cross-Strait economic cooperation and improving people's livelihood.     The talks were supported and welcomed by people from both sides, Zheng said, adding the upcoming fourth round of talks would take into consideration the desire of people on both sides and the development of cross-Strait relations.     The two sides also discussed the use of relief funds donated by the mainland to Taiwan to combat Typhoon Morakot in August.     The ARATS received 450 million yuan of relief funds and has already delivered one third of it to the SEF. The rest would be sent to the SEF next week, it said.     Both sides agreed that the funds would be used in rebuilding the island's damaged bridges, schools and public facilities.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States can take active steps to eliminate discriminatory measures towards Chinese poultry products, said Yao Jian, spokesman of China's Ministry of Commerce, on Friday.     Yao made the remarks in a comment on the ministry's official website on the 2010 Agriculture Appropriations Bill, which has modified the stance towards Chinese poultry imports, compared to that in the Omnibus Appropriations Act 2009.     "We welcome the changes," Yao said.     He pointed out, however, there are still restrictions against Chinese poultry products in the new bill.     "China is evaluating whether the restrictions are totally in line with the non-discrimination principle of the World Trade Organization and other relevant regulations," Yao said.     "China's poultry products are safe and reliable... We hope the United States can stand on the footing of maintaining mutual benefit in China-U.S. trade and take active steps to eliminate discriminatory measures and normalize bilateral poultry trade at an early date," Yao said.     Yao hoped that the U.S. could modify relevant regulations to resume poultry imports from China.     The U.S. House of Representatives passed the 410-billion-U.S.-dollar Omnibus Appropriations Act 2009 in February, which said "none of the funds made available in this Actmay be used to establish or implement a rule allowing poultry products to be imported into the United States from the People's Republic of China."

BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin attended a symposium here on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising of two air carriers in Hong Kong in 1949.     On Nov. 9, 1949, a total of 12 aircraft from the carriers flew from Hong Kong to Beijing and Tianjin on the Chinese mainland during the uprising, a move embraced by the New China. WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) --The U.S. Commerce Department said on Tuesday that it has set preliminary antidumping duties (AD)on imports of steel grating from China, a move that might escalate trade disputes between the two countries.     The department said it "preliminarily determined that Chinese producers/exporters have sold steel grating in the United States at 14.36 to 145.18 percent less than normal value."     As a result of this preliminary determination, Commerce will instruct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to collect a cash deposit or bond based on these preliminary rates.     The product covered by this investigation is a downstream steel product typically comprised of bearing and cross bars used for walkways, platforms and flooring.     From 2006 to 2008, imports of steel grating from China increased 538.44 percent by volume and were valued at an estimated90.7 million dollars in 2008, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.     Commerce said that it is currently scheduled to make its final determination in April 2010.     If Commerce makes an affirmative final determination, and the U.S. International Trade Commission makes an affirmative final determination that imports of steel grating from China materially injures, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, Commerce will issue an antidumping duty order.     The new case followed U.S. President Barack Obama's recent decision to impose punitive tariffs on all car and light truck tires from China for three years, a move quickly denounced by China as a "serious act of trade protectionism."     The protectionist moves by the Obama administration will ultimately hurt the U.S.-China trade relations, which are becoming more and more important due to the global financial crisis, economists warned.

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- China should enhance supervision and management of the country's insurance investment, said Li Kemu, vice chairman of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC),on Sunday.     "With insurance funds were extended into disparate fields, other than bank deposit, demand for a better supervision and risk control enhanced, said Li at the International Finance Forum held in Beijing.     By the end of September, 3.4 trillion yuan (497.8 billion U.S. dollars) of insurance funds were invested in bonds, mutual funds, and stocks markets. Bonds investment alone accounted for 50.6 percent of the total.     Jiang Dingzhi, China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) Vice Chairman also highlighted the importance of establishing a "all-coverage" financial supervision system.     He suggested the country broaden the financial supervision and management system, which would put the mutual funds, hedge funds, and credit risks appraisal agencies under control.     The new system requires financial institutions to share information, and also cooperate to fill the supervision blanks between different financial markets, he said.
