LONDON, April 3 (Xinhua) -- As the curtain dropped on the G20 London summit, Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming on Friday reiterated China's opposition to protectionism and voiced support for cooperation.     "This summit has yielded a series of positive and pragmatic results for the international society to jointly tackle the current financial crisis," Chen said.     He said it included reaching broad consensus on stabilizing international financial markets, speeding up reform of the international financial system, actively pushing forward the Doha round talks, and opposing trade protectionism.     Chen said history and experiences have proved that protectionism will only drag the world economy into deeper recession. As the crisis is worsening, people have increasingly realized the necessity and urgency to reject protectionism, he said.     Chinese President Hu Jintao pointed out at the G20 summit that facing the impact of the international financial crisis, China will continue to stick to its opening-up and reform policy, and unswervingly adopt the mutually-beneficial and win-win strategy.     China will not turn to protectionism just because it is encountering some temporary difficulties during the process of economic development, he said.     What the world needs now, Chen said, is to adopt economic stimulus plans to jointly overcome the difficulties and to recover economies. At this critical time, people must be especially cautious about protectionism, preventing it from sabotaging all the efforts that the world has done so far, he said.     "China will act responsibly, seriously implement the agreements reached at the G20 summit, in efforts to push forward the world economy, as well promote the development of international trade," Chen said.     He proposed that the international community jointly maintain a fair and open international trade environment, protect the authority and seriousness of multilateral trade regulations, actively push forward the Doha round talks, and jointly resist protectionism.     Chen noted that despite all the anti-protectionism claims by many countries, protectionist measures are in fact making inroads since the outbreak of the financial crisis.     China supports the G20 agreement to extend the ban on protectionism until the end of 2010, however, it remains difficult to define protectionism and unreasonable trade restriction measures, Chen said.     All measures not allowed by the WTO are considered protectionist, and therefore should not be allowed to be implemented, he said.     Chen also raised concerns over the possible misuse of some measures permitted by the WTO, such as trade subsidy, and urged restraint.     The WTO members should try not to use, or use with discretion protectionist policies, so as to create a sound climate for promoting free trade, he said.     Currently, the WTO has established a monitoring mechanism, with periodical reports on its members' actions, a move conducive to curbing protectionism, Chen said.     Protectionism is on the rise since the crisis, but it still falls short of being rampant, which indicates the global multilateral trade rules remain effective to some extent, he said.     China supports the establishment of such a WTO supervision mechanism, he said.     China has firmly reiterated its opposition to protectionism, Chen said, noting that China's measures taken since the crisis are considered positive by both WTO Director General Pascal Lamy and EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton.     China's economic stimulus measures complied with the WTO rules, he said.     Chen also said the Doha round trade talks are of great significance in promoting the development of the multilateral trade system and a successful deal would strongly promote global economic growth.     History over the past century has proved that trade grows faster than economy, and it is trade that pushes forward economic growth, he said.     Chen urged flexibility by major countries to push forward the Doha negotiations.     "With joint efforts by various parties, we remain optimistic about the outcome of the Doha round talks," he said.

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton here on Saturday, stressing that it is of ever great importance to further deepen and develop Sino-U.S. relations.     Hu appreciated Clinton for her inaugural visit to China and other parts of Asia since taking office, saying this reflects the importance the new U.S. administration puts on developing relations with China and other Asian countries.     Clinton said she had "very good meetings" with Chinese officials during her visit, which she called the beginning of "a new era" of Sino-U.S. relations characterized by positive cooperation. BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- China has issued a circular Sunday "stoutly" ordering officials at all levels not to spend public money on sightseeing overseas.     The circular was jointly issued by the General Office of the State Council and the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee amid a situation where many Chinese officials have been using public money to pay for their personal travel disguised as business trips.     The Chinese government hoped officials at all levels to set an example for other people to cope with the financial crisis and overcome the obstacles in economic development.     According to the circular, all overseas business trips should be arranged strictly. The expenses and number of officials for such trips should be kept as low as possible. And related departments should include all those expenses into their budget and get them approved beforehand.     Officials should not add more countries or cities to their travel schedules at will and extend their stay aboard. And they should not claim reimbursement for personal trip costs or resort to companies or inferior departments to cover their travel spending.     Xinhua reported in last December that two officials were removed from their posts in east China's Jiangxi Province for being implicated in overseas sightseeing disguised as study tours earlier in 2008.     Liu Zhongping, who was on an 11-member delegation to the United States and Canada in April, was ousted from the dual posts of Party secretary and Chief of the Office for Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs of Xinyu City. BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Yu Xiuli, a victim of domestic violence, can turn to police for help if her husband continues to beat her thanks to a regulation which came into effect on Sunday.     The 40-year-old woman in eastern Shandong Province has been bearing the cursing and beating of her husband for years, but has never thought of asking police for help.     "I believed it was not the business of police to stop domestic violence so I has never thought of alerting police," said Yu.     But from Sunday women like Yu could alert police if they fall victim to domestic violence according to a regulation of the province that came into effect Sunday.     Many provinces in China have set up police centers to handle household violence after a national regulation that was issued in September last year requiring police to be dispatched whenever they receive a 110 emergency call regarding household violence.     According to the All-China Women's Federation, domestic violence poses a severe threat to women's rights in China with the authorities receiving about 50,000 complaints annually.     In fact, women in China have had more channels to protect their rights and interests.     On Saturday, a hot line - 12338 for protection of women's rights was opened in eastern Zhejiang Province. The hot line was set up to provide legal help for women, including migrant workers, in Zhejiang.     The Zhejiang provincial women's federation said the province has had 280,000 volunteers and 25,000 community or village centers for women rights protection.     The issuing of a regulation to prevent and curb household violence has been put on the agenda of the provincial legislature this year, it said.     In Beijing, the Chaoyang District People's Court opened a hot line for protection of rights and interests of women and children on Wednesday. The line was the first among the capital's court system.     The hot line will offer legal aid to women and children.     "The whole society has been attaching increasing attention to the protection of women's rights in marriage, employment and family life in recent years," said Shi Yan, a judge of the court.     The court set up a collegial panel specially for women and children in December 2007. Similar panels have also been set up in courts of other provinces across the country to better protect women's rights.
