People on both sides should have broader and deeper exchanges to increase mutual understanding and achieve more common ground.     He pledged that the People First Party will continue to actively promote the cross-Strait relations.     Yok Mu-ming said the mainland and Taiwan should increase technical exchanges and industrial cooperation on agriculture and fishery to create an "economic miracle" for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Friday that China hopes to advance the strategic cooperative partnership with the Republic of Korea (ROK).     "We will work with the ROK to increase friendly exchanges at various levels and enhance pragmatic cooperation in various sectors," Hu told Kim Hyong-o, speaker of the ROK National Assembly.     Hailing the smooth development of China-ROK ties in recent years, Hu said the leaders of the two nations had maintained frequent contacts, exchanged views often and reached broad consensus on important issues.     "This gives strong impetus to the growth of bilateral relations," Hu noted. URUMQI, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Police in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China, has stepped up crackdown on criminal activities to safeguard stability and public security.     The anti-crime action will be carried out across the region from the beginning of November to the end of the year, said a spokesman for the regional public security bureau Monday.     Local police will continue manhunt to nab suspects in connection with the July 5 riot in Urumqi, the regional capital. Meanwhile police will keep a close eye on clues and cases involving terrorism and explosions, said the spokesman.     The strike also targets criminal activities involving infringement of finance and properties and criminal activities threatening public security, the spokesman said.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao stressed on Sunday that the final ends of the nation's economic growth is to improve people's well-being, which is always a priority on the government's agenda amid the global financial crisis. Despite the tight fiscal condition, China beefed up the income and welfare enjoyed by the retirees and low-income residents, and unveiled the significant health-care reform in 2008, Wen told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.     "We will overcome every difficulty to well implement the health-care reform which has close bearing on people's health," he said. BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- In cold weather, 45 Japanese war orphans revisiting China to thank their Chinese foster families received a warm welcome in Beijing.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met them, mostly in their seventies, in the Zhongnanhai compound Wednesday. Premier Wen invited the orphans to Zhongnanhai for talks and also accompanied them on a visit to the former residence and office of the late Premier Zhou Enlai inside the compound, who were much concerned about the war orphanage issue.
