BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday personally conveyed National Day greetings to elderly scientists who have made prominent contributions to atomic and medical research.     China's National Day this year will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of modern China. Premier Wen first visited Zhu Guangya, a nuclear physicist and one of the key scientists engaged in producing the first of China's atomic and hydrogen bombs between the 1950s and 1960s.     "You have devoted your whole life to the development of the country and service to the people. We will remember you with concern forever," Wen told 85-year-old Zhu. BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday called for more policy assistance and financial support to encourage the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).     Attendees at a State Council executive meeting, chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao, agreed that promoting the sound development of the SMEs was of great importance to maintain economic growth and social stability.     The government would exert more efforts to improve the policy and law system to create a more open and fair competition environment for SMEs.     Measures would be taken to help SMEs tackle financing difficulties, and the establishment of the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), the country's first Nasdaq-style market, would speedup helping small companies raise fund.     The central government would also increase funding to support the SMEs, especially in sectors such as technological innovation, industrial structure adjustment and employment.     The government would pick some SMEs to participate in the country's subsidized purchasing program of home appliances, agricultural machinery and automobiles in rural areas as well as the auto, home appliance replacement program.     Attendees at the meeting demanded better services for SMEs and support to promote technological progress and structure adjustment in SMEs.     They also reviewed and approved draft regulations on national body-building and on the administration of joint-venture establishment of foreign companies or individuals in China. Both regulations would be released to public after further revision.

BEIJING, Oct.17 (Xinhua) -- China's civil aviation industry made profits of 9.1 billion yuan (about 1.33 billions U.S. dollars) in the first nine months of 2009, despite the punch by the financial crisis on the world's civil aviation industry, said the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on Saturday.     Domestic air passenger traffic volume grew by 23.6 percent from a year earlier in first nine months of this year.     Performance of small airports, those that handle less than 1 million passengers annually, were most inspiring, said Li Jiaxiang, director with the CAAC, at the 2009 China International General Aviation Convention held in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Saturday.     Li said that passenger volume of small airports grew 26.7 percent year on year to 14.87 million in the first half.     He contributed the vibrant performance of small airports and regional air routes to the more balanced economic development of China's different regions in recent years, which was the result of the country's strategies to develop the relatively poor western and central regions and to revive the old industrial base in northeastern regions.     Besides, the fact that Chinese people are becoming richer and CAAC's policies carried out last year to subsidize small and medium-sized airports and regional air routes also helped the passenger volume rise of small airports, said Li.     By the end of 2008, China had 116 small airports, accounting for 73 percent of the total number of the country's airports.

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China vows to strengthen the prevention and control of the A/H1N1 flu virus in the run-up to the National Day celebrations, amid fears that the situation will worsen through autumn. According to a statement released after a meeting held by the State Council here Monday, schools are currently the key places in the country's fight against the virus and classes should be suspended "properly" to avoid mass infection when an outbreak occurs.     "Currently the global epidemic situation is getting worse. As autumn comes, the number of domestic cases in China is also on the rise... The prevention and control work faces fresh obstacles," said the statement.     Primary and secondary schools in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, remained closed Monday in the wake of a recent outbreak of 43 A/H1N1 influenza cases.     Similar outbreaks have also been reported at schools in other regions, including the provinces of Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hainan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     The State Council urged railway and aviation departments to improve their emergency plan against possible epidemic outbreak in crowded situations.     According to the statement, medical staff, technical equipment and materials should be ready at any moment in case of an emergency -- especially around the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     In addition, the State Council urged medical companies to stock vaccine and other medicines and ensure vaccine safety for human use.     The meeting was presided over by premier Wen Jiabao.     By last Friday night, 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu had been reported on the Chinese mainland, of which 3,577 have recovered. There have been no deaths from A/H1N1 in main land China.

BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC)and the government are to deepen the educational campaign on national unity, Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said Monday.     At a televised conference held by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission in Beijing, Liu said strengthening education on national unity was necessary "for safeguarding national unification and opposing separatism", as well as "for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." JINAN, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged the country's companies to reduce operation costs by speeding up the development of renewable energy and help improve the country's energy structure.
