RIGA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu met with Latvian President Valdis Zatlers and Parliament Speaker Gundars Daudze here on Tuesday.     In his meeting with Zatlers, Hui said the China-Latvia relations have been developing smoothly in recent years. The two sides have maintained high-level contacts and strengthened mutual political trust. There has also been remarkable progress in economic and trade cooperation and people-to-people contacts.     President Zatlers visited China last year and reached important consensus with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the development of bilateral relations, said Hui.     The current visit is aimed at implementing the consensus reached last year, deepening friendship and promoting cooperation, he said.     The two sides should work together in face of the current global financial crisis, and should also look even farther and further promote cooperation, he said. BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's securities authority Thursday began reviewing applications of the the first seven IPOs for listing on the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), a Nasdaq-style market in China.     The seven enterprises covered fields of software, medical equipment and medicines. They planned to raise 2.27 billion yuan (332.65 million U.S. dollars).     The review meeting was for the first time opened to journalists, who were allowed to watch the meeting for about ten minutes.     The second batch of IPOs will be reviewed Friday and they plan to raise 1.13 billion yuan (165.30 million U.S. dollars), according to a report on the website of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).     IPO review meetings would be concentrated on these days, a CSRC official, who declined to be named, told Xinhua Monday.     "IPO applications sent to the regulator were concentrated. The regulator had to take into consideration forming a block and guard against speculation that might push up IPO stocks prices," the official said.     The CSRC started to accept applications of the GEM on July 26 and had received 155 applications for IPOs on the GEM as of Sept. 10. The CSRC has formally agreed to handle 149 enterprises' applications that aim to raise 33.61 billion yuan (4.92 billion U.S. dollars).

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Most parts of China saw limited rainfall through Saturday as people could get view of a bright full moon in clear meteorological conditions at the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival.     Only the southwestern and part of the northwestern regions saw some rainfalls, but starting Sunday, weather in those regions will also clear up for the locals to get view of the full moon, according to China Meteorological Administration.     In the coming three days, parts of the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region expect a weak rainfall with strong wind. Temperature will drop 4-8 degrees Celsius after the cold front moves over the region.     Meanwhile, parts of the northeastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Heilongjiang Province will also see some weak rainfalls in the next three days.     The Administration also warns of twin typhoons Parma and Melor churning in the Pacific Ocean.     Typhoon Parma which now is bearing down on the Philippines expects to bring gales and major rainfalls along China's southeastern regions in its course during the coming three days.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for efforts to intensify energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental protection to ensure clean, safe and sustainable development.     Li made the comment at a meeting in Beijing on Tuesday, urging efforts on development of green industry and sustainable economy.     He said environmental protection should be strengthened as the environmental problems in China are still severe, such as the water, air and soil pollution.     Li said China's economy is still at a critical moment as it begins to recover steadily. NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak here on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the UN meetings to discuss bilateral ties and other issues of common interests.     Hu said thanks to their joint efforts the two countries have seen steady progress of exchanges and cooperation in various fields in recent years.     All consensus reached between them have been implemented smoothly, with some already bringing about remarkable results, Hu said.     Hu noted that the two countries have maintained fine communication and coordination in regional and international affairs, adding that China is ready to join hands with South Korea to strengthen strategic communication and expand mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to bring concrete benefits to both peoples and contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in Northeast Asia. They met again on the sidelines of the financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in London in April this year.     China and South Korea are both important neighbors and cooperative partners. Now China is the top trade partner, export market and source of imports of South Korea.     Hu is in New York for the UN climate change summit, the general debate of the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly and a Security Council summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.     After the UN meetings, President Hu will fly to Pittsburgh to attend the G20 financial summit.

BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Saturday called for serious study and implementation of a decision of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on strengthening and improving Party building.     The decision was adopted in mid-October at the fourth session of the 17th CPC Central Committee.     The essence of the session must be implemented in an all-out, steadfast and efficient way, said Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, while delivering a report to 1,800attendants at the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.     The six pieces of experience summarized in the document are an embodiment of the endeavors of several generations of Chinese Communists in the 60 years of ruling of the Party, and are a treasure of the Party, said Xi, also president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.     The decision is focused on major issues regarding Party building, which are strategic, fundamental and urgent, he said, adding it is a major task for Party organizations of all levels to study and implement the essence of the session under the current new situation.     Central and local Party schools are a major place to train and foster Party members, leading officials and theorists, as well as study Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and the socialist theoretical system with China's characteristics, Xi said.

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Industrial enterprises in 22 Chinese provinces, regions and municipalities generated 1.11 trillion yuan (163 billion U.S. dollars) of profit in the first seven months, down 17.3 percent from the same period last year, according to the latest official figures.     The decline is 3.8 percentage points lower than that in the first six months, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Friday.     The revenues gathered by the industrial companies' core businesses reached 21.4 trillion yuan in the first seven months, up 0.9 percent from last year. The growth rate is 0.5 percentage points higher than that in the first six months.     Of the 39 industrial sectors, 14 achieved a rebound in profit growth, nine recorded a slow-down in profit declines and four turned slumping profit to rebounding profit.     The 22 regions refer to China's provinces, regions and municipalities minus Beijing, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Hunan, Guangdong, Anhui, Hainan, Chongqing, Yunnan and Tibet Autonomous Region.     The NBS used to publicize national industrial profit every two months, but began to issue the information monthly to improve monitoring frequency on economy this year. Only 22 provinces, regions or municipalities now provide monthly industrial profit data.
