BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Albania issued a joint statement here Tuesday in which they said they would boost their traditional friendship and bilateral cooperation in all fields.     The statement was issued after official talks between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha in the Great Hall of the People during the afternoon.     The two countries vowed to increase mutual investment, encourage more business contacts and promote a balanced development of trade ties, the statement said.     China would support its competitive companies to invest in Albania and participate in the country's infrastructure construction, energy and mine exploitation, it said. Albania said it appreciated China's aid for its economic development. MOSCOW, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday that he is looking forward to meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao next month during the Chinese leader's trip to Russia.     Medvedev, who met with Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo on Friday, said he and Hu will exchange views on major international and regional issues of common concern during their June meeting. BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) -- China will continue its massive elimination of backward industrial facilities in 2009 to save energy and cut pollution in its bid to address climate change, the government said Friday.     China aims to close down small coal-burning power stations with a total generating capacity of 15 million kilowatts, according to an action plan approved by a joint meeting of the national steering committee for responses to climate changes and the State Council steering committee for energy-saving and emission control Friday.     China will continue to eliminate obsolete capacity in key industries, including 10 million tonnes in iron-making industry, 6million tonnes in steel industry, and 50 million tonnes in cement industry, said the plan examined at the meeting presided by Premier Wen Jiabao.     The meeting decided to adopt more measures, including stricter energy efficiency and environmental assessments, to control the expansion of industries that consumed excessive energy and discharged pollutants. (Xinhua/Pang Xinglei)    The government also called for the promotion of recycling and the use of energy efficient products, including subsidizing purchases of energy-efficient air conditioners, refrigerators and lamps.     Central and local governments would further increase investment in energy efficient projects.     In 2009, such projects are expected to reduce energy consumption equal to 750 million tonnes of standard coal usage. New sewage treatment projects will treat 10 million cubic meters of waste water.     The government would also publicize local government efforts to reduce energy consumption, improve supervision and enhance cooperation with international agencies to develop alternative energies and low-carbon technologies.     The government has set a goal to reduce energy consumption per 10,000 yuan (1,464 U.S. dollars) of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent from 2006 to 2010.     In the three years to 2008, energy consumption per unit of GDP fell 10.1 percent, according to the State Council. That means saving 300 million tonnes of standard coal and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 750 million tonnes.     Emissions of sulfur dioxide in the same period fell 8.95 percent, and chemical oxygen demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, was down 6.61 percent.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Han Seung Soo described Friday the rapid growth of bilateral ties with China as "unprecedented".     "We have witnessed over five million ROK and Chinese people visit each other's country and the two-way trade volume expand 26 times bigger during the 17 years since ROK and China forged a diplomatic relationship", Han said. Han made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua on the sideline of a spring conference of the Institute of International Finance in Beijing.     He said being neighbors, cultural similarity and friendship between the two peoples offered a solid foundation for the two nations to foster ties.     China and the ROK agreed to upgrade their "comprehensive and cooperative partnership" to "strategic cooperative partnership" in May, 2008 during the ROK president Lee Myung-bak's first visit to China. After the test, it also fired some short-range missiles.     "The status of a non-nuclear peninsula is not only a must for the peace and stability on the peninsula, but also for that of East Asia and the world," Han said, expressing his hope that China, which chairs the six-party talks, could continue to play its positive and constructive role.     Launched in 2003, the six-party talks grouped China, DPRK, ROK, the United States, Russia and Japan. The talks have been stalled since the top negotiators last met in Beijing last December.

WASHINGTON, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's National People's Congress (NPC) and the U.S. House of Representatives have wrapped up their 10th meeting under a parliamentary exchange mechanism in Washington after having an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral ties, inter-parliamentary exchanges, global financial crisis, climate change and international and regional issues of mutual concern.     The meeting, held here on Tuesday, was co-chaired by Chairman Li Zhaoxing of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee and Representative Joseph Crowley, chairman of the counterpart exchange mechanism in the House.     During the meeting, the Chinese side said that with growing common interests and greater opportunities of cooperation, China and the U.S. should further increase mutual trust and cooperation from strategic and long-term perspectives, respect and take care of each other's core interests, handle differences and sensitive issues with prudence, and ensure a healthy, stable growth of bilateral relationship.     The U.S. side reaffirmed the importance it has attached to the U.S.-China relationship and said that the House of Representatives will work to help the two countries tackle issues such as global financial crisis, climate change and energy safety through further exchanges and dialogues with NPC.     Both delegations agreed that the existing parliamentary exchange mechanism has become the most direct and effective platform for communications between the two sides and has played a positive role in deepening mutual understanding, building consensus and promoting cooperation.     The two sides also discussed the necessity for the two countries to strengthen coordination in macro economic and financial policies and how to cooperate in dealing with the climate change issue.     The Chinese side extended an invitation to the U.S. side on a visit to China in fall this year for the 11th meeting under the parliamentary exchange mechanism.

URUMQI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The Xinjiang branch of China Charity Federation said Saturday it had received 2.03 million yuan (297,218 U.S. dollars) in donation from all walks of life for victims in the Urumqi riot.     The single largest donation is 200,000 yuan from the Xinjiang company of China Pacific Life Insurance Co., Ltd., said the federation.     Wu Jie, an employee of the insurance company, said she would like to do something for the dead and injured people. "We need to comfort the families of the dead and help the people who need medical treatment."     Maolaxifu Rishat, a businessman of the Tartar ethnic group who was the first to propose a comfort fund for riot victims, donated 5,200 yuan on behalf of 14 donators from 14 different ethnic groups.     "We pray for national unity in Xinjiang, so that we can have a peaceful and harmonious environment," he said.     Urumqi Public Transport Group, which suffered 37.6 million yuan as hundreds of its buses were torched or smashed, received 3.38 million yuan in donation from enterprises in the city. Five bus drivers of the group were killed by mobs and 57 others injured.     The riot in Xinjiang on July 5, the worst in six decades, caused a severe shortage of blood at local hospitals where more than 1,000 injured people were rushed in.     Shortly after the shortage was reported, many citizens rolled up their sleeves to donate blood.     On Friday, Urumqi's blood center announced the shortage had been eased, but donors continued to pour in.     A total of 1,315 people from 13 ethnic groups had come to the blood collection stations to donate 400,000 milliliters of blood as of 10 p.m. Friday. More than 1,000 other people have made appointments with blood collection centers to donate blood in the coming days.
