HAIKOU, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's southern island province of Hainan saw a surge in travelers on Saturday, one day before the Chinese Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, said local officials.A total of 65,397 people arrived in Hainan, a tourist resort, on Saturday, up 30.16 percent from the eve of the Chinese lunar new year of 2009, according to a spokesman with the local holiday and travel coordination bureau.A survey of 10 scenic spots in Hainan showed they received about 41,750 visitors on Saturday and their total ticket income hit 2.07 million yuan (303,000 U.S.dollars), up 7.32 percent and 12.37 percent respectively from the eve of the last Spring Festival, the spokesman said.Another survey of Hainan's 21 hotels showed they accommodated 6,101 travelers on Saturday, and reported an income of 5.04 million yuan, up 26.21 percent, he said.From Feb. 1 to Feb. 13, more than 3,800 foreign travelers arrived in Hainan for a holiday, according to statistics from the Haikou General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection."I am very happy to spend Spring Festival in such a beautiful island. BEIJING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign-funded enterprises in China exported 494.4 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products in 2009.A document posted on the website of the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said the figure made up 69.3 percent of the country's total exports of such products in the past year.Exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products by privately-owned enterprises totalled 106.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, down 8.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the document.State-owned enterprises only exported 92.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products, accounting for 12.9 percent of the country's total machinery, electrical and electronic products last year.The GAC document also said the majority of the country's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products fell into the category of processing and assembling trade.China's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products in the category of processing and assembling trade totalled 466.4 billion U.S. dollars last year, making up 65.4 percent of the country's total exports of such products.The country exported 713.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products last year, down 13.4 percent year-on-year. BEIJING, Feb. 22 -- The Chinese central government plans to implement a new policy in the first half of this year to encourage auto industry consolidation and further the development of Chinese-brand passenger vehicles, an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said at a recent news conference.According to sources with knowledge of the new policy, it intends that Chinese-brand passenger vehicles will comprise at least half of vehicle sales by 2015 and sedans made by entirely domestic automakers will have about 40 percent of the nation's car market.Statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) show that 4.58 million Chinese-brand passenger vehicles were sold last year, some 44.3 percent of the total. Through an acquisition deal with Aviation Industry Corp last year, Chang'an Auto closed the biggest asset deal between State-owned auto enterprisesSales of domestic sedans hit 2.22 million units, almost 30 percent of the segment.The new policy will also focus on accelerating consolidation between automakers and could lead to a new round of reshuffling, industry insiders said.China became the world's largest auto producer and market last year with both production and sales surpassing 13.5 million vehicles due in part to government incentives.There are now more than 130 carmakers across the country, but most of them are small enterprises with annual production and sales of fewer than 10,000 units.Only five had sales of more than 1 million units last year as the country's top 10 carmakers moved a total of 11.89 million vehicles to account for 87 percent of overall sales, according to market data.Consolidation movesLast year, Chang'an Motor Corp acquired two minivan makers - Hafei and Changhe - as well as engine producer Dong'an Auto from the Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC), marking the biggest asset deal ever between State-owned auto companies.Chang'an is the fourth-largest motor group in China and the local partner of US carmaker Ford Motor and Japan's Mazda and Suzuki. BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China named and shamed more than 10,000 workshops and selling groups in dust and poisonous material-related industries last year in a bid to fight against occupational diseases, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).The figure was revealed at a national meeting on food safety and sanitation supervision here Monday amid an ongoing campaign on regulating workshops and selling companies in the fields of mining, quartzite processing, gem processing, stone processing, smelting and cement production among others.The campaign, starting in last August, was jointly launched by the State Administration of Work Safety, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and All-China Federation of Labor.Earlier this month, 152 workers at an electrical and lighting company in south China's Guangdong Province were found to have suspected mercury poisoning, showing symptoms such as headaches, hair loss, joint aches and shivers.According to the company, all six production lines of the workshop used liquid mercury, but some workers seldom took the trouble to wear a mask at work.Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong said at the meeting that the ministry is currently working with other departments to set up regular meetings at ministerial level on the prevention and control of occupational diseases.The MOH is also aiming to set up a network against occupational diseases at grassroot level while providing basic job-related health services for migrant workers, said Chen.

BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will adopt stricter measures to boost energy conservation this year to meet the goal set by an important five-year plan, Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, said Wednesday."It's the last and decisive year for us to realize the goals set by our country's 11th Five-Year Plan," Xie said at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature."The current energy conservation situation lags far behind the goal set in our plan and our task is still formidable," said Xie, one of China's leading negotiators for climate change talks.Under the 11th Five-Year Plan ending this year, China pledged to cut energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent, or four percent each year, but consumption fell by a margin much smaller than the set target during the past four years.The per unit GDP energy consumption fell only 14.38 percent from the 2005 level.Xie said the Chinese government will enact a series of measures this year to boost energy conservation, including the introduction of an accountability mechanism for provincial governments and tight control of projects of high energy consumption and high pollution.China announced in November it aimed to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with 2005 levels.
