Nanjing - Four people died and 16 were injured when a snow-laden fuel pump shelter in Nanjing suddenly collapsed on Sunday afternoon, according to local sources.The accident took place around 2:30 pm at the Sinopec Wujiang fuel pump station in Pukou District of Nanjing, the Jiangsu Province capital, when one van, one sedan and six motorbikes were refueling.The station ceiling, with a floor area of 1,430 square meters, suddenly gave way to the thick snow that had accumulated on it over the past few days. When it hit the ground, it engulfed all the vehicles and people beneath it, said information from the city government.It was not immediately known whether any station service workers were in the accident.The victims were all rescued from the debris and rushed to hospital immediately. Four later died from their injuries. The others were hospitalized.The accident is under further investigation.

BEIJING, March 21 -- A growing number of people are choosing to keep their money in the bank rather than invest it in stocks or property, a central bank survey released yesterday said.     More than 51 percent of the 20,000 households polled said the current level of interest rates was "appropriate", the quarterly survey by the People's Bank of China said. The figure was up from 46 percent in the previous poll held in the fourth quarter of last year, and was the fourth consecutive quarterly increase.     The central bank raised interest rates six times last year in a bid to curb inflation. The rate for a standard one-year savings account is now 4.14 percent, up from 2.52 percent at the start of last year.     While investing on the stock market was a popular option in the earlier part of last year, recent corrections have dampened enthusiasm. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index has fallen about 40 percent since October, and in recent months, bank deposits have grown significantly.     The survey was carried out last month and involved families in 50 cities. Of those polled, 35 percent said they thought it necessary to save more, up from 30 percent in the previous poll, while almost 28 percent said they planned to invest more in stocks and mutual funds, down from about 36 percent.

FUZHOU - Seven people are missing after a fishing vessel collided with a cargo ship in the sea near Keelung Islet, Taiwan, in the early hours of Saturday, said an official with the Taiwan Affairs Office of East China's Fujian Province.A cargo ship, registered in Singapore, collided with a fishing boat, which was carrying 71 people - two from Taiwan and 69 from the mainland, said the official.All the fishermen plunged into the sea but 64 people were later rescued. The seven missing people were confirmed to be residents on the mainland.The rescue operation is ongoing.

The government is to increase the level of pensions and housing subsidies for poor families in a bid to bridge the widening income gap. A State Council meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday pledged to increase pensions for more than 40 million retirees from State-owned enterprises over the next three years. The government has already raised their pensions in the past three years by an average of 8 percent a year. But the cabinet considers the present pension level "still quite low". It said the increases over the next three years would exceed the rises made between 2005 and 2007 to "further ease social tensions caused by the income gap". The move is aimed at helping retired senior technology professionals and those who now get a relatively low pension. The cabinet ordered local governments to make sure this year's pensions are paid by the end of the month. While pledging to regularize pension increases, the cabinet also called for the development of other forms of pension rather than solely relying on the budget. It mentioned commercial and enterprise-funded insurance schemes. The average pension of enterprise employees is about 750 yuan (0) per month - the minimum salary set for developed cities, including Beijing. "With my pension, I can just about make ends meet. Up to now, most big hotels, department stores and supermarkets in Beijing and Shanghai have paid fees to the Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC) for using the songs under their administration, according to sources.And Karaoke bars in China's main cities were made to pay 12 yuan (US.50) a day in royalties to music artists for each room, according to a regulation set by China's National Copyright Administration late last year.However, most television and radio stations in China are still using music works without paying any royalties.The Music Copyright Society of China is now negotiating with television and radio stations on copyright fee payments, China Press and Publishing Journal reported.The Music Copyright Society of China is the country's only officially recognized organization for music copyright administration.The association has now administered copyrights for over 14 million music works by 4,000 members.Public venues including hotels, restaurants and department stores are charged with different standards by the society. The usual fee is 2.54 yuan (US.9) per square meter per year for a department store of 10,000 to 20,000 square meters to use the music, the society said.

SHANGHAI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- A traditional commodity fair in east China, conventionally regarded as a barometer of the nation's foreign trade, reported less demands from American businessmen than expected, indicating a possible slowdown of Sino-U.S. trade.     The 18th East China Commodity Fair, an event held at the beginning of every year, reported around 1,600 American businessmen, far less than expected.     "The number of the American businessmen to the fair was only two thirds of those from the European Union, showing the deficient domestic demands of the United States," said Wang Qingjiang, an official with the fair.     "The subprime crisis in the United States has shown its influence on China's exports," he added.     The 5-day fair registered total business deals worth 583 million U.S. dollars between Chinese companies and the U.S. businessmen, a 1.5 percent dip from last year.     Deals worth more than 3.67 billion U.S. dollars were signed at the fair, a 3.52 percent growth from 2007.     Deals between Chinese companies and the European Union businessmen added up to 879 million U.S. dollars, a 9.5 percent growth compared with the last fair.     Chinese companies and the Japanese businessmen made deals worth906 million U.S. dollars, almost the same amount compared with last year.     The fair attracted more than 19,000 businessmen from 145 countries and regions around the world, with more than 60 percent from Asia.     According to experts, the fair could indicate the trend in China's foreign trade in 2008.
