SHANGHAI: In a fresh sign of China¡¯s financial strength, a leap in the shares of Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Monday made it the world¡¯s biggest bank by market capitalisation, overtaking US giant Citigroup. ICBC¡¯s Shanghai-listed A shares surged 2.68% to 5.75 yuan, giving it a market capitalisation of 4bn, according to Reuters calculations. That exceeded the 1bn capitalisation of Citigroup, previously the world¡¯s biggest bank, when its shares closed at .73 in New York on Friday. HSBC Holdings was in third place with 5bn. But some analysts believe ICBC¡¯s ballooning capitalisation may also be a sign of a dangerously overheated Shanghai stock market as speculating Chinese investors pour money into shares. ICBC, a state-controlled behemoth which is trying to modernise a creaky branch network operating almost entirely inside China, reported income of bn last year. Wen's three-day trip, the first by a Chinese premier in nearly seven years, comes six months after Abe went to Beijing to mend ties chilled by his predecessor Junichiro Koizumi, who repeatedly visited Yasukuni Shrine that honors Japan's war criminals of World War II. Yesterday, the two leaders declared their firm intention to move forward on rebuilding relations, signed agreements on energy and the environment and issued a joint statement that spelt out issues for cooperation. An environmental accord called for the two to work on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol on climate change by 2013. The other agreement committed the two nations to cooperate on developing energy resources and building nuclear power plants in China. In the joint statement, the two vowed to seek ways to jointly develop gas deposits in disputed waters, pursue the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and strengthen defense cooperation. During their talks, Wen said that the history issue is crucial for bilateral relations as it affects the national feeling of the Chinese people. It could be an obstacle to improved ties if not handled well, he added. He urged the Japanese leaders to face up to history and "open up good, forward-looking relations toward a beautiful future". Wen also reiterated China's position on the Taiwan question, hoping the Japanese side can realize the acute sensitivity of the issue and deal with it properly. Abe reiterated Japan's commitment to the principles enunciated in the three joint documents directing bilateral relations. On disputed waters in the East China Sea, the two sides agreed to speed up the negotiation process to seek a solution that is acceptable to both. The two sides pledged to make the area "a sea of peace, cooperation and friendship". Wen arrived in Tokyo just hours after the two countries signed an accord lifting Beijing's four-year ban on Japanese rice imports. China banned imports in 2003, claiming Japanese rice did not meet the requirements of its revised quarantine system. Wen is scheduled to address Japan's parliament today. He will also meet Emperor Akihito and co-chair an inaugural meeting with Abe on a high-level economic dialogue that will involve officials at the ministerial level and above. He will even join in a game of baseball - a popular sport in Japan - tomorrow with college students in western Japan before returning. Meanwhile, Abe accepted an invitation to visit China again this year. Though no timetable has been set, it is widely believed that he will visit in the autumn to attend the celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral relations. His trip is seen as setting the stage for President Hu Jintao's first visit to Japan next year.

BEIJING -- China's first lunar probe Chang'e-1 will fly to the moon orbit with no more orbital corrections, a scientist told Xinhua on Saturday.Tang Geshi, a scientist with the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC), said that the center will order the satellite to apply the first break at about 10:00 on Monday with no more planned orbital corrections.BACC carried out an orbital correction of Chang'e-1 on Friday, about nine days after its launch. "The correction has made the satellite run accurately in the transforming orbit heading to the moon, and another correction planned on November 4 will be unnecessary," Tang said.The Chang'e-1 lunar probe has been flying at a speed of 500-meter per second to the space where the moon's gravity could capture it.It has completed four orbital transforms and one halfway correction and is expected to enter the moon orbit on November 5.China's first lunar probe, Chang'e-1, named after a fairy-tale Chinese goddess who flew to the moon, blasted off on a Long March 3A carrier rocket on Oct. 24 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern Sichuan Province.

The law states that both live and mechanical performances enjoy the same rights. Up to now, most big hotels, department stores and supermarkets in Beijing and Shanghai have paid fees to the Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC) for using the songs under their administration, according to sources.And Karaoke bars in China's main cities were made to pay 12 yuan (US.50) a day in royalties to music artists for each room, according to a regulation set by China's National Copyright Administration late last year.However, most television and radio stations in China are still using music works without paying any royalties.The Music Copyright Society of China is now negotiating with television and radio stations on copyright fee payments, China Press and Publishing Journal reported.The Music Copyright Society of China is the country's only officially recognized organization for music copyright administration.The association has now administered copyrights for over 14 million music works by 4,000 members.Public venues including hotels, restaurants and department stores are charged with different standards by the society. The usual fee is 2.54 yuan (US.9) per square meter per year for a department store of 10,000 to 20,000 square meters to use the music, the society said.

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's economy would moderate but remain robust in 2008 with a growth rate of 10.7 percent, providing a cushion against the expected international downturn, according to a forecast issued by the United Nations commission here on Thursday.     "Investment continues to be the main driver of growth, remaining resilient despite government cooling measures and with support from low real interest rates," said a report released by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).     "A slowdown in exports and the country's efforts to cool the economy are the main reasons for the moderation," it said.     Other factors expected to underpin China's growth include domestic demand, increasing spending power of rural consumers and rising consumption through higher government spending on social welfare.     Official statistics show China's gross domestic product growth accelerated to 11.4 percent in 2007, the fastest for 13 years.     The report said the U.S. sub-prime mortgage crisis is not expected to have a strong impact on growth in China.     "In a worst case scenario where the U.S. economy goes into recession, the impact on China will not be as great as on other Asia-Pacific countries. Due to its blistering pace, China's growth will remain resilient, but will slow," said Shuvojit Banerjee, a senior expert with the UNESCAP.     According to the report, China's increasing exports to the European Union are expected to compensate for a steady fall in exports to the United States, China's second largest export market. China has also witnessed a boom in trade with Africa.     It said Chinese and other Asia-Pacific investors are playing a key role in supporting developed countries through the turmoil. Sovereign wealth funds and state investment institutions from the region have bolstered weakened banking sectors in the United States and the Europe.     The report said China is facing an increasing challenge from inflation. The chief inflationary concerns lie in higher international oil and food prices. "Rising food prices are a bigger inflationary concern than oil prices because food accounts for a far higher proportion of consumer spending. Food price inflation particularly hits low income households."     The report also warned that the fast growth is coming at an increasing cost to the environment. It said the destabilizing effect of growth on the environment is becoming more apparent. Air pollution, especially in large cities, is increasing the incidence of lung disease.

WASHINGTON - Senior officials from the United States and China are scheduled to hold a twice-yearly dialogue in Washington this week on bilateral and multilateral issues, AFP reported Monday, citing a statement by the US State Department. US deputy secretary of state John Negroponte and China's Executive Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo will lead their teams to the two-day US-China "senior dialogue" beginning Wednesday, said the statement. The dialogue is expected to cover the countries' bilateral relations as well as a range of key global issues, including security in Northeast Asia, energy and the environment, Iran and the conflict in Sudan's Darfur. The dialogue "is an important forum for both countries to discuss issues of strategic and political importance, including how to achieve our common goals," according to the statement. US President George W. Bush and Chinese President Hu Jintao agreed in 2004 during a summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC) forum to hold the talks among their officials as part of efforts to improve ties. US-China ties are clouded by a variety of issues, including US accusations that China is keeping its currency undervalued. Currency concerns dominated a US-China "strategic" economic dialogue last month led by Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi and US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson even as unveiled measures to boost trade and investment ties.Despite criticism from the US in particular, Chinese officials contend that currency reforms are moving as quickly as the developing economy and financial system will allow.
