XI'AN -- A fire burnt up trees and shrubs on a mountain that shrouds one of the most famed imperial mausoleums in the ancient city of Xi'an in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, but no damage was caused to the cultural relics, local museum officials said on Sunday.The fire broke out around 2:00 p.m. Saturday on the western part of a mountain that encased the tombs of a powerful Chinese empress Wu Zetian and her husband Gaozong in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The Qianling Mausoleum, as the tombs are called, reportedly houses the most precious possessions of the two rulers, including paintings, ceramics, calligraphy works and jewelry articles.The fire was fanned up by sandstorms which struck the area on Saturday, said Fan Yingfeng, curator of the Qianling Museum.More than 100 local villagers and 15 fire-fighters managed to put out the fire around 3:10 p.m. on Saturday. About 30 trees and a few shrubs were lost to the blaze.Initial investigation showed the fire was caused by a deserted cigarette end in the dry grasses."Although the fire didn't cause any major damage, it reflected an urgent need to educate residents in neighboring villages to guard against fire risks," Fan said.He said lessons should be learnt from the destruction of a 600-year-old Namdaemun gate in Seoul, one of the most treasured landmarks in the Republic of Korea. The two-tiered gate was set ablaze by a man upset over a land dispute.

The country's fast-developing tourism industry is expected to boost the hotel sector, a senior official has said.About 200,000 new hotels, resorts and guesthouses are likely to be built by 2015, head of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) Shao Qiwei said on Thursday.Addressing a seminar on domestic and international hotels' groups, he said the new structures will include about 10,000 star-rated hotels. The number of five-star hotels in the country is expected to rise from 361 to 500."The World Tourism Organization has forecast that China will grow into a huge tourism market, and have 100 million each of inbound and outbound visitors and 2.8 billion domestic tourists by 2015," he said.The booming tourism market has created the need for new hotels and other infrastructure facilities, he said.The Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts plan to open five new facilities in the country this year, and at least 13 more in big cities such Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an in the near future, the general manager of Traders Hotel at China World Trade Center in Beijing, Xin Tao, said.In fact, the group plans to open at least 40 new hotels in the country by 2011."The Olympic Games has brought us unlimited business opportunities and the increase of leisure, as well as business, travel in China will add to the appeal of hotel operators," she said.Investment from home and abroad into hotels will hit 340 billion yuan (.14 billion) between 2006 and 2010, the CNTA has forecast.The hotel sector was one of the first to be opened up in China, with Jianguo Hotel in Beijing being the first foreign-invested hotel to be approved by the State Council in 1979.Since then, 67 hotel brands of 41 international groups have entered the country and are managing 516 hotels at present, according to CNTA statistics.The hotel business has been expanding over the past three decades, and by the end of last year there were more than 14,000 star-rated hotels, 100 times more than in 1978.

Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang said on Wednesday that China is fertile ground for an online advertising exchange akin to the one the US Internet titan is buying. The ad exchange serves as a place where advertisers can easily "hook-up" with websites or online services that cater to desired customer demographics. A leading Chinese trade union for journalists is considering action against a bogus "official" website for the organization. The website -- www.acja.cn -- runs genuine news industry information and links, as well as the emblem of the All-China Journalists Association (ACJA), the ACJA announced in Beijing Wednesday. "The fake website claims it is the website of the ACJA and uses the emblem of ACJA on their website," Gu Yonghua, ACJA party secretary said. "Under the name of ACJA, it even runs recruitment advertisements, carries advertisements and operates other business," Gu said. The fake website uses the abbreviation of the ACJA''''s English name as its domain name, while the genuine official website of the ACJA -- www.zgjx.cn -- uses the abbreviation of the Pinyin, phonetic Chinese name. "The fake website has several unhealthy links that impair the reputation of ACJA," claimed Gu. "The website has infringed on the rights of the ACJA," Gu said, warning Internet users to avoid the bogus site. The ACJA, formerly the China Youth Journalists Association, was founded in Shanghai on Nov. 8, 1937. The association, as a national association for Chinese journalists, has 223 local association members representing750,000 Chinese journalists. The genuine website for the ACJA was just opened in February. The fake website carries the claim that it opened 10 years ago and is planning to go public. It is linked to several media websites, including The People''s Daily and the Washington Post. Search engines like Google and Baidu are also on its webpage. However, the server and operators of the website are still unknown, sources with ACJA said. The ACJA was contacting the Ministry of Information Industry and other government agencies to identify the operators and servers and would take legal action against the website if necessary, said ACJA sources.

SHANGHAI -- China will launch its first Mars probe in October 2009 as part of a joint mission with Russia, said sources with the Shanghai Space Administration, the main developer of the probe, on Monday. Researchers are "pressing ahead" with the project for a synchronized launching with a Russian probe, said Chen Changya, a researcher with the Shanghai Institute of Satellite Engineering, at a space technology exhibition. He said the home-developed Chinese probe is scheduled for completion by June 2009. The probe, 75 centimeters long, 75 centimeters wide, 60 centimeters high and weighing 110 kilograms, is designed to be able to serve a two-year mission, according to Chen. Its model is on display at the exhibition. The Chinese probe, with Russia's Phobos-Grunt, will be launched by a Russian carrier rocket, Chen said. They are expected to land on Mars in 2010 after 10 month's flight.

The system will benefit about four million students from the 1,800 high-schools and about 16 million students from 15,000 vocational schools.To buildup the five-class subsidy framework, the government will input 15.4 billion yuan during this fall semester, with the input to be doubled to 30.8 billion yuan next year. The ministry said the annual input from the government on the improved subsidy system will reach 50 billion yuan in the future.In addition, the Chinese government has also input nearly 40 billion yuan to improve the teaching quality of the high-schools, so as to help China's high-schools listed among the world's top-level schools.To train more professional and skilled talents in the coming years, the central government also planned to input a total of 14 billion yuan on the development of vocational education in the 11th five-year period. The fund will be used to set up more training bases for the vocational schools and further improve teaching quality of those schools.
