Since the heads of state of the two countries met in Yekaterinburg in Russia earlier this year, bilateral practical cooperation have made substantial progress and entered a new era of development, and bilateral trade has grown rapidly, with a broad prospect of cooperation in the areas of natural gas, mining and cotton.     Karimov said, in response to the worsening of the international financial crisis, the Chinese government has adopted a series of effective measures to resolve the difficulties faced by China's economy and played an important role in promoting the growth of the world economy.     He said, against the backdrop of profound and complicated changes in today's world, Uzbekistan is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields. BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale medal on Tuesday for their prominent contributions to health care.     Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China, conferred the medals on the nurses at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Premier Wen Jiabao and senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang also attended the awarding ceremony.     Chinese nurses have made great contribution to the country's humanitarian cause, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu at the awarding ceremony.     A total of 28 nurses from 15 countries worldwide won the award this year.     The Florence Nightingale medal, which is the highest international honor for nurses, is being given for the 42nd time since its introduction in 1912.     "It honors exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims of armed conflict or other disasters, or exemplary service and a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the Web site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.     The award is named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English nurse known for her pioneering work to improve the care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).     A total of 54 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates for the award in 1983.

BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- A report on the building of rural social security system was submitted Thursday to the ongoing session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, for deliberation.     Sun Wensheng, vice chairman of the NPC Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, said steady progress had been made in the development of rural social security system when delivering the report at the session of the NPC Standing Committee.     A total of 833 million rural residents, or 94 percent of the rural population, have joined the rural cooperative medical care system, up 2.5 percentage points from the beginning of this year, according to the report.     The rural cooperative medical care system, a government initiative implemented in 2005 that intended to make health services more affordable for the rural poor, had alleviated illness-caused poverty among farmers, it said.     The report said 320 counties, or 11.6 percent of the country's total, had been or would be approved to try a new rural social pension insurance system, which would benefit more than 15 million rural residents.     Under the pension system, senior rural residents will receive a monthly ole-age pension of varying amounts, which will be set by government according to the local income standards.     However, some local governments were financially challenged to implement the rural social security programs and only a relatively small percentage of migrant farmer workers were covered, Sun said.     The report was the result of a nearly four-month investigation conducted by the NPC Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.     Initiated in September, the investigation covered 17 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.
