BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 40-member Chinese medical care and epidemic prevention team left here for Haiti on Sunday afternoon on a chartered flight, which also carried 20 tonnes of medical supplies, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).The MOC said earlier in the day that China had decided to provide medical supplies worth 18 million yuan (2.64 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to quake-ravaged Haiti.The 20-tonne medical supplies included medicines, hygiene equipment, medical devices and camping equipment, said the ministry in a statement.Also onboard the plane would be four Chinese peace-keeping police officers, replacing the four who were killed in the earthquake. BEIJING, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Central Government has sent eight inspection working groups to 16 provincial areas nationwide to prevent the melamine-tainted milk powder, which killed at least six in 2008, from being reclaimed illegally in producing milk products.Leftovers of milk powder contaminated by melamine were sealed in 2008 and required to be destroyed, but some might have been used as raw materials for diary products illegally in certain areas, according to local police.Police in Shaanxi Province on Thursday publicized a case on illegal use of leftovers of melamine-tainted milk powder.An initial investigation showed 10 tonnes of tainted milk powder leftovers were sold to a local diary producer Lekang Company in September and October in 2009. Three suspects were arrested.Three suspects from the Shanghai Panda Dairy Company were prosecuted in December 2009 on suspicion of using leftovers of melamine-laced milk powder in milk products. Local police said all the company's products had been recalled and caused no serious harms to the consumers.China's food safety authorities on Feb. 1 launched a 10-day checks for melamine-tainted milk products across the country.However, the string of problems gave another blow to China's efforts to restore confidence in its dairy products.The melamine-laced milk products scandal in 2008 killed at least six infants and sickened 300,000 children across the country.Any illegal practices concerning food safety would be punished severely, an official with the National Food Safety Rectification Office led by Health Minister Chen Zhu said earlier this week.The quality watchdog of Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, has carried out food safety inspection on 73 batches of different brands of milk products and has not found problems.The northeastern Jilin provincial government kicked off a milk product safety check at the end of January."We must do our best to retrieve and destroy milk products that have quality problems. BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday objected Japan's claim on a tiny atoll in the Pacific Ocean, saying international laws saw no justification for Japan's latest move on the atoll, some 1,700 kilometers south of Tokyo.The Japanese government reportedly submitted a bill to the congress on Monday, which proposes the protection of the coastlines of remote islands, including the so-called Okinotori island.This was widely seen as Japan's latest step to change the Okinotori into an "island", which would imply Japan's rights to claim Okinotori's surrounding area as an exclusive economic zone.But China insisted that Okinotori is merely a rock rather than an island, which can be used to claim an EEZ around."The Okinotori atoll is only about 10 square meters above the sea at the flood-tide and is nothing but a rock according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLS)," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told a regular press briefing Tuesday in Beijing.Japan's move to claim rights over such a large marine area, centered on the Okinotori atoll, is against international laws and would gravely damage the interests of the international community as a whole, Ma said.According to Article 121 of the UNCLS, rocks that cannot sustain human habitation or an economic life of their own shall have no exclusive economic zone or continental shelf.Japan has been trying to make the atoll a de facto island by a spate of moves in years.Since 1987, Japan has spent some 300 million U.S. dollars in building concrete wall around the Okinotori atoll, and has completed a solar-powered lighthouse on the atoll.Besides, Japan has allocated part of its fiscal 2010 draft budget for infrastructure building on Okinotori atoll to keep it from submerging into the sea."Japan's such actions and claims are obviously untenable in legal terms and other countries have also raised their concerns," Ma said. "The construction of facilities, however, will not change its legal status."Some analysts say Japan tries to create an "artificial island" to meet the international laws because the Okinotori, which lies between Taiwan and Guam in a strategically important position, could win the country an EEZ and rich resources in the surrounding sea area.Japan could claim the EEZ of about 400,000 square kilometers and continental shelf of about 740,000 square kilometers around the Okinotori atoll as long as it proves to be an "island"."The activities Japan has conducted is obviously attempting to build a artificial island, which, however, can not enjoy the same status of a natural island that can claim an EEZ around it," said Zhou Zhonghai, an expert on international laws from the China University of Political Science and Law."Japan is trying to pass a bill at home to challenge the world," Zhou added."Japan's claim has harmed other countries' interests of navigation and marine survey in the sea waters around the Okinotori, and is contrary to the principle of fairness, " said Jin Yongming, a fellow researcher from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China named and shamed more than 10,000 workshops and selling groups in dust and poisonous material-related industries last year in a bid to fight against occupational diseases, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).The figure was revealed at a national meeting on food safety and sanitation supervision here Monday amid an ongoing campaign on regulating workshops and selling companies in the fields of mining, quartzite processing, gem processing, stone processing, smelting and cement production among others.The campaign, starting in last August, was jointly launched by the State Administration of Work Safety, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and All-China Federation of Labor.Earlier this month, 152 workers at an electrical and lighting company in south China's Guangdong Province were found to have suspected mercury poisoning, showing symptoms such as headaches, hair loss, joint aches and shivers.According to the company, all six production lines of the workshop used liquid mercury, but some workers seldom took the trouble to wear a mask at work.Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong said at the meeting that the ministry is currently working with other departments to set up regular meetings at ministerial level on the prevention and control of occupational diseases.The MOH is also aiming to set up a network against occupational diseases at grassroot level while providing basic job-related health services for migrant workers, said Chen.

GUIYANG, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a partial collapse of an unfinished building Sunday in southwest China's Guizhou Province has risen to seven, the rescue headquarters said.A mold supporting structure in the corridor between two halls at the International Conference and Exhibition Center under construction in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou, collapsed at around 11:30 a.m., burying workers working at the area, said a spokesman for the rescue headquarters.Rescuers found 26 workers who were rushed to hospital.
