CHENGDU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Rescue operation and disaster relief for victims in the worst earthquake over decades are of top priority of the nation, and thus require concerted efforts from the whole country, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday night.     Monday's 7.8-magnitude earthquake that ravaged southwestern Sichuan Province and was felt in most parts of the country was the "most destructive" tremor and had the "most wide-spreading impact" since New China was founded in 1949, Wen said on a meeting of the rescue headquarters under the State Council headed by himself. BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday paid a morale-boosting visit to the country's Paralympic athletes, urging them to "strive to become strong and fight for the best."     With 16 days to go until the opening ceremony in Beijing, Hu, accompanied by Vice President Xi Jinping, went to the training center for Paralympic athletes in a northeastern suburb of the capital in the morning. GENEVA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Related parties should enhance diplomatic efforts and show flexibility in order to find a negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday.     "Currently there is a rare opportunity for promoting the resumption of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue," said Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi, who represented China at a meeting here with Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili.     "Enhanced diplomatic efforts and flexibility are needed for an early resumption of negotiations so that a long-term, comprehensive and appropriate solution could be found for the nuclear issue," he said.     Saturday's meeting was led by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and attended by senior diplomats from the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.     The United States was represented by Undersecretary of State William Burns at the meeting. His participation was seen as a shift of long-standing U.S. policy toward Iran, as Washington had always insisted that it would not talk with Tehran unless it halts its uranium enrichment activities.     "It's highly significant that for the first time the political directors of all six countries with Solana were talking with our Iranian colleagues," Liu told reporters.     "It was the shared hope of all parties participating in the meeting that we find a negotiated solution to the nuclear issue," he said.     Both Solana and Jalili said Saturday's meeting was positive and constructive and promoted understanding of each other's positions.     They also agreed to talk again by phone or in person in about two weeks.     At the meeting, Iran failed to give a clear answer to a package of incentives presented by the six countries last month over the resumption of nuclear negotiations.     "We hope very much we get the answer and we hope it will be done in a couple of weeks," Solana told a press conference following the meeting.     The package of incentives suggests that Iran get a temporary reprieve from economic and financial sanctions in exchange for freezing its enrichment activities. Preliminary negotiations over a permanent halt could then begin.     "The package is supported by all six powers ... we think if negotiations could be resumed on this basis and finally a negotiated solution could be found, it will be a very good way out," Liu said.

BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting Qatar Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasim Bin Jabir Al-Thani here on Thursday. DUSHANBE, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Leaders attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the Tajik capital issued a joint declaration Thursday on security, energy and several other issues.     The declaration was signed by Chinese President Hu Jintao, his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon and his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov.     ON USE OF FORCE     The leaders agreed that any attempt to solve problems by merely resorting to force could not work and would only hinder a comprehensive settlement of local conflicts, the declaration said.     A comprehensive solution to existing problems can be found only by taking into account the interests of all parties involved and including them all in the negotiation process rather than isolating any of them, said the declaration.     Any attempt to strengthen a country's own security at the expense of that of others is detrimental to maintaining global security and stability, it said.     On the issue of South Ossetia, the SCO members expressed their deep concerns over the tension triggered by the South Ossetia conflict, and called on relevant parties to solve existing problems peacefully through dialogue, strive for reconciliation and push for negotiations.
