BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Tuesday that China and the United States will start preparations as soon as possible for the second round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) scheduled for next summer in Beijing.     China and the United States will continue implementing the agreements reached at the first round of the dialogue last July in Washington, Hu said in remarks to reporters after talks with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     The two leaders spoke positively during the talks of the importance of the strategic and economic dialogue mechanism in strengthening mutual trust and cooperation between the two nations, he said.     Both leaders believed that close high-level contacts and other dialogues and consultations at various levels are essential to the development of bilateral relations, said the Chinese president.     The two sides agreed to keep close communication through visits, phone calls, letters and meetings during multilateral events, Hu said.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday again expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, urging the U.S. to respect China's core interests and withdraw related arms sales plan.     "The U.S. arms sales to Taiwan infringe upon China's security interest as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and interfere with China's internal affairs," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu in a statement.     Jiang made the comments in response to a reporter's question on U.S. government approval for Raytheon Company to sell 1.1 billion U.S. dollars of Patriot antimissile system to Taiwan.     "We have raised solemn representations to the U.S. side," said Jiang. "We urge the U.S. to stop arms sales to Taiwan to avoid undermining China-U.S. cooperation."     Jiang said, "We urge the U.S. to clearly recognize the severe consequences of arms sales to Taiwan, reject the cold war mentality, and adhere to the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, especially the principles established in the Joint Communique on Aug. 17, 1982."     The "Aug. 17 communique" stated that the U.S. would not seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, and intended to gradually reduce arms sales.     "We also persuade the Raytheon Company to stop pushing or participating in arms sales to Taiwan, and refrain from doing anything that harms China's sovereignty and security interest," Jiang said.

BEIJING, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's upcoming state visits to Malaysia and Singapore would comprehensively push forward China's ties with the two nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), said an official with the Foreign Ministry here Friday.     Hu will pay state visits to Malaysia and Singapore from Nov. 10to 13, at the invitations of Malaysian Supreme Head of State Mizan Zainal Abidin and Singaporean President S. R. Nathan.     It is the first time for President Hu Jintao to pay state visits to Malaysia and Singapore as president of China, and it is also the first time in 15 years for a Chinese President to visit the two countries, said Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue at a news briefing.     During his stay in Malaysia, Hu will hold talks with Supreme Head of State Mizan and meet with Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.     "President Hu's visit to Malaysia will surely further deepen strategic cooperation between the two nations and advance bilateral ties," said the assistant foreign minister.     While in Singapore, he will hold talks with President Nathan and meet with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.     President Hu will exchange views with Singaporean leaders on deepening mutually beneficial and cooperative ties, and discuss international and regional issues of common concern," said the assistant foreign minister.     Vice Minister of the Ministry of Commerce Yi Xiaozhun said China and the two countries had good economic and trade relations and were each other's important trade partners.     In Malaysia, the two sides will sign economic and trade cooperative documents to push forward joint projects in the infrastructure area.     While in Singapore, leaders of both nations will discuss on how to promote bilateral trade and investment, advance major cooperative projects and enhance cooperation within the framework of regional and international trade.     "We believe that President Hu's visit will surely expand the scale of economic and trade cooperation between China and the two countries, and promote the sustained and stable development of bilateral relations, " Yi said.

GUANGZHOU, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's railway authorities are gearing up for a real-name ticket selling system to stop ticket scalping during the upcoming Spring Festival traffic rush. The pilot system announced Friday requires passengers to show their ID cards or other identification documents when purchasing train tickets at 37 stations in the southern Guangdong and Hunan provinces, and also the southwestern province of Sichuan.     Millions of migrant workers from inland provinces like Sichuan and Hunan work in Guangdong, known as China's "factory of the world."     The system will take effect during the Spring Festival traffic peak season, from Jan. 30 to March 30. BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China will, without any doubt, be able to achieve the 8 percent growth in gross domestic product (GDP) this year, a senior Chinese economist said Sunday.     Yao Jingyuan, chief economist with the National Bureau of Statistics, made the remarks at a fortune forum in Beijing.     However he warned that the Chinese economy will still face two major problems next year: slumping overseas market demand and weak driving force on domestic market.     Chinese economy rose 7.7 percent in the first three quarters, driven mainly by investment and consumption, but brought down by exports, Yao said.     He stressed more efforts should be made on structural adjustment to shift dependence on the industrial growth to the comprehensive development of the agricultural, industrial and service sectors.     Yao highlighted the importance to raise people's incomes, add investment on livelihood projects and give full play to the role of consumption to boost economy.     Meanwhile, China should turn its economic growth dependence from resources-intensive consumption to technology renovation, Yao said.
