“No law requires any company in China to install mandatory back doors,” Ren said at a rare briefing with foreign media on Tuesday in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. “I would never harm the interest of any customer or any country.”

“The right solution to sales tax in my view, and certainly this is Amazon’s position and its been consistent and we’ve had this position for 10 years, is that the right place to solve this is federal legislation. … There is an initiative called the simplified sales tax initiative. 22 states have already signed on. That legislation needs to get passed. I believe that will happen in the time frame that you laid out. I hope it happens much sooner than that. I think it is the right thing to do and it would be great for Amazon. By the way … keep in mind — in more than half of the geographies where we do business in certain states as well as Europe and Asia, altogether, more than half of our business is in jurisdictions where we already collect sales tax or its equivalent, like the value-added tax. Our position on this hasn’t changed. We think our position is a good one, and we will stick to that.”
“Our newest drone design includes advances in efficiency, stability and, most importantly, in safety,” Wilke wrote in a blog post. “It is also unique, and it advances the state of the art. How so? First, it’s a hybrid design. It can do vertical takeoffs and landings – like a helicopter. And it’s efficient and aerodynamic – like an airplane. It also easily transitions between these two modes – from vertical mode to airplane mode, and back to vertical mode.”
“My general take on this whole process was that it was madness,” said Nathan Jensen, a professor at the University of Texas-Austin and co-author of the book Incentives to Pander. “The Amazon public call and then giving cities two months to (respond) was crazy.?Cities can barely put together presentations in that time-frame, much less make meaningful changes.”
“So in a lot of ways, 2018 was about banking the efficiencies of investments in people, warehouses, infrastructure that we had put in place in 2016 and ’17,” Olsavsky said. “So while we’ll continue to concurrently drive growth and customer offering and Prime benefits, we certainly do take costs seriously and we will continue to work on operational efficiencies. I would expect these investments to increase relative to 2018.”

“The U.S. should have the most modern government in the world and today it doesn’t. And it’s great to see the effort that Jared is putting in in working on things that will pay back in five and 10 and 20 years. The government should be focused on its citizens and the services of the government should be measured on how pleased the citizens are with receiving those services. That basic premise is not how it’s done today and so I would really encourage you to ask the cabinet how they’re measuring their parts of government and what they’re doing to serve the citizens that they’re meant to do. Secondly, totally unrelated but something I feel very passionate about: coding should be a requirement in every public school. We have a huge deficit in the skills that we need today versus the skills that are there, and we’re trying to do our part or hopefully more than our part in doing that, but I think leadership from government is also key.”
“So, it just pops up on a drone right in front of your door?” Cummings asked.
“The amount of data generated by businesses, as well as consumers, is just incredible – especially when you consider the rise of mobile, social, interactive websites, government third-party data and other sources,” said Marcus. “Companies are just sitting on these enormous piles of data, but they’re unsure how to derive actionable intelligence from it in a timely manner. This presents a need for solutions like Versium’s that provide actionable data intelligence (in the form of a predictive score) faster, more accurately, and at a fraction of the cost of traditional predictive analytic solutions.”
“It’s certainly possible that they’ve done that,” Fancher said. “It’s also possible that they’re going to be negotiating outside of court … a couple like that does have a strong interest in keeping things out of court.”
