BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's joint prevention and control tactic has been proved to be powerful, orderly and effective in fighting the spreading of A/H1N1 virus, said Vice-Premier Li Keqiang while he presided over a conference on the issue Friday.     The tactic has helped the nation win time and initiative in the efforts to deal with the epidemic, which has protected the people's health rights, reduced its impacts on economy and society in a maximal way, and provided favorable conditions for the country's development, said the official, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau. Li conveyed the instructions of Hu Jintao, state president and general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, and Premier Wen Jiabao on the issue. URUMQI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The Xinjiang branch of China Charity Federation said Saturday it had received 2.03 million yuan (297,218 U.S. dollars) in donation from all walks of life for victims in the Urumqi riot.     The single largest donation is 200,000 yuan from the Xinjiang company of China Pacific Life Insurance Co., Ltd., said the federation.     Wu Jie, an employee of the insurance company, said she would like to do something for the dead and injured people. "We need to comfort the families of the dead and help the people who need medical treatment."     Maolaxifu Rishat, a businessman of the Tartar ethnic group who was the first to propose a comfort fund for riot victims, donated 5,200 yuan on behalf of 14 donators from 14 different ethnic groups.     "We pray for national unity in Xinjiang, so that we can have a peaceful and harmonious environment," he said.     Urumqi Public Transport Group, which suffered 37.6 million yuan as hundreds of its buses were torched or smashed, received 3.38 million yuan in donation from enterprises in the city. BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- China's power consumption declined 3.63 percent year on year in April, larger than the 2.01 percent decrease rate in March, the China Securities News quoted figures from the China Electricity Council (CEC) Friday.     A total of 275.67 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were used in April. The figure for the first four months was 1.06 trillion kilowatt hours, down 4.03 percent from the same period a year ago.     Analysts said the extending decline indicated a soft footing in economic recovery. It is normal that power output and consumption have ups and downs in the process of economic revival.     From January to April, power used by the agriculture and tertiary sectors went up 4.69 percent and 9.04 percent. And that for industrial sector slipped 8.29 percent.     The National Bureau of Statistic (NBS) said on May 13 that power generation fell 3.5 percent last month from a year earlier, to 271.29 billion kilowatt hours. The industrial output rose 7.3 percent in the same month.     Since the industrial sector consumes about 70 percent of China's power, some economists questioned whether a rise in industrial production could be accompanied by a decline in power consumption.     Zhang Liqun, a researcher with the Development Research Center of the State Council, a government think-tank, told Xinhua that when looking at the decline in industrial power use, it was important to remember that industrial upgrading was still in progress. The decline of electricity consumption by heavy industry, which accounts for 82 percent of total industrial power consumption, was the leading cause for the overall decline.     According to CEC data, power consumed by the heavy industry was down 8.62 percent in the first four months, and that for the light industry sank 6.76 percent.     Analyst expected that power use in May would fall slower than the previous month, as the rebounding electrolytic aluminum and iron and steel industries would use more electricity in the coming months.

UNITED NATIONS, May 4 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the international community to continue to push forward the nuclear disarmament process.     Cheng Jingye, director-general of arms control and disarmament department of the Chinese foreign ministry, made the appeal here at the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.     Complete prohibition and thorough destruction of nuclear weapons for the establishment of a world free of nuclear weapons is not only the shared aspiration of the international community, but also the goal that China has advocated and worked for over the years, Cheng said.     "China believes that nuclear disarmament should be a fair and reasonable process of gradual reductions towards a downward balance," he said.     Cheng urged nuclear-weapon states to commit themselves unequivocally to complete prohibition and thorough destruction of nuclear weapons, and negotiate and conclude an international legal instrument at an early date.     Pending achievement of the above-mentioned goal, nuclear-weapon states should reduce the role of nuclear weapons in their national security policies, he said. They should undertake unequivocally not to be the first to use nuclear weapons, and conclude an international legal instrument on not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states or nuclear-weapons-free zones.     As states with largest nuclear arsenals, the United States and Russia bear special and primary responsibilities, he said. BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-nine large and medium-sized Chinese steel producers reported 5.18 billion yuan (762.46 million U.S. dollars) in aggregate losses in the first four months, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said here Friday.     The 29 producers were among 72 surveyed by CISA, the association's vice chairman, Luo Bingsheng, said.     The 72 companies reported 575.59 billion yuan in revenue, down 18.9 percent year on year, Luo said. They paid 15.42 billion yuan in taxes, down 85.07 percent year on year, Luo said.     Losses were mainly caused by slumping domestic steel prices, Luo said.     Many producers have cut costs, and the production cost of steel dropped 13.75 percent in the first quarter, Luo said.
