BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee convened a meeting here on Friday, analyzing and studying the economic work of next year and setting out major tasks.     The meeting said that this year has been eventful and the country has risen to many daunting challenges, including the global financial crisis and domestic natural disasters. The economy has maintained a stable and relatively fast growth and society has been stable, which are hard-won achievements, it said.     The meeting, chaired by CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao, warned that the worsening global financial crisis would have more impact on China's economic development, urging the country to take more precautionary measures to meet the challenges.     The meeting said that next year, which marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China, the nation should boost domestic demand for a stable and relatively fast economic growth, accelerate the transformation of development patterns and structure adjustment for sustainable development, deepen the reform and opening-up drive and solve problems that concern the people's interests for a healthy and rapid economic and social development.     Maintaining a stable and relatively fast economic development should be the foremost task for next year's economic work, it said, urging a better combination of ensuring growth, boosting domestic demand and adjusting structure.     An "active" fiscal policy and "moderately loose" monetary policy should be continued, and measures including tax reduction and increasing central government investment should be taken to safeguard the people's livelihood, stimulate domestic demand and transform development patterns, it said.     Consumption, rural consumption in particular, should be actively boosted and a set of major projects on livelihood, infrastructure and environment protection should be launched.     The position of agriculture as the foundation of the economy should be strengthened and agriculture production be boosted, it said.     The stable growth of foreign trade should also be maintained.     Structural adjustment should be accelerated, including developing the high-tech industry, small and medium-sized enterprises, the service sector and coordinating regional development.     More progress should be made on energy saving and emissions reduction and pollution treatment be stepped up, the meeting urged.     Rural reform and financial reform should be deepened, and people's livelihood should be improved and more jobs be created, it said.     The meeting also agreed in principle suggestions on judicial reform by the CPC Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission.     The reform should meet the judiciary needs of the people and aim at promoting social harmony, beef up measures to tighten the restraint on and supervision over the use of power, and remove barriers that hamper justice, it said.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planning agency on Monday said it would raise the minimum purchasing price for wheat by as much as 15.3 percent starting next year.     The move by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) aims to boost rural income and grain output. The country, with a population of more than 1.3 billion, relies mainly on domestic production for food.     By hiking grain purchasing prices the NDRC hopes to motivate farmers to increase agricultural production.     The government's minimum purchasing price for white wheat next year will be 0.87 yuan (12.7 U.S. cents) per 500 grams, 13 percent higher than prices in 2008. In addition, prices for red and mixed wheat will be 0.83 yuan per 500 grams, up 15.3 percent.     The agency also pledged to further increase subsidies for agricultural production materials, machinery and crop seeds.     It will also increase commercial reserves of fertilizer to help ensure market supply and price stability.     The NDRC would like to expand China's grain production capacity by 50 million tons.     On Oct. 11, China's Ministry of Agriculture predicted an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     According to estimates from the State Grain Information Center, this year's grain output should reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007.     The central government allocated 102.86 billion yuan (15.1 billion U.S. dollars) in agriculture subsidies this year, doubling the money from 2007.     The NDRC also plans to raise the minimum purchasing price for rice next year, although it did not give further details.

China has been working to reduce its heavy reliance on exports and investment over the past years.     "The country needs to take the challenges of the ongoing global financial crisis as opportunities to accelerate industrial restructuring to create new growth and foster other competitive edges," he said.     China would continue with its reform and opening up, Hu said. "The country will lose no chance to introduce reforms that can promote the development at the right time, and will take note of bringing the market into full play in allocating resources."     The country would actively develop the export-oriented sector and step up the diversification of exporting markets, Hu added.     He also said the country would stick to improving people's living conditions and building a stable society. The country would adopt "more active" employment polices next year, Hu said.     He pledged to improve urban and rural social security systems and vowed intensified efforts in supervision and inspection of food, drug and work safety.     "The country has great potential in economic development and has also accumulated strong capabilities to withstand risks over the past 30 years of reform and opening up," Hu told the non-Communist people.     The non-CPC personages said they endorsed the CPC and government's judgment on current situation as well as plans on next year's economic development.   BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- The three warships forming the small fleet that set sail from Sanya in south China's Hainan Province for escort mission off Somali are among the most sophisticated vessels of the Chinese navy.     The flagship of the fleet, DDG-169 Wuhan, is a multi-purpose missile destroyer of Type 052B of the People's Liberation Army Navy. It was built by Jiangnan Shipyard of Shanghai in 2002. BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China said Friday it welcomes and supports the UN Security Council resolution on Gaza.     "The resolution reflects the concerns and desires of the international community on the situation in Gaza," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in response to a question.     China called for effective implementation by all parties concerned of the new resolution and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, Qin noted.     China also urged Israel to withdraw its forces from Gaza, ensure the smooth operation of humanitarian aid activities and ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza at an early date, he said.     Qin called on all parties concerned to continue the political process to achieve a just and reasonable settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli issue and realize the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and peaceful coexistence.     The UN Security Council on Thursday adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza "leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces."     The new resolution, drafted by Britain, was adopted with 14 voting in favor and the United States abstaining after a compromise was reached between Arab foreign ministers and their Western counterparts.     More than 700 Palestinians reportedly died in 13 days of Israeli military action in Gaza, which was undertaken in retaliation for the firing of rockets into southern Israel by Hamas militants.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The latest test found that Chinese baby formula milk and other milk powder products met the new temporary restrictions on melamine, the country's top quality control agency said on Thursday.     It was the 13th test on the industrial chemical following the tainted baby formula scandal that killed at least three infants and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).     The latest test covered 60 batches of baby formula milk powder from 14 brands in five major cities nationwide, and 68 batches of other milk powder products from 22 brands in 12 cities, the agency said.     At present, 1,336 batches of baby formula from 74 brands and 1,935 batches of other milk powder from 178 brands produced after Sept. 14 were tested and all were in line with the limit, it added.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.     China set temporary limits on melamine content in dairy products earlier this month. The limits were a maximum of 1 mg of melamine per kg of infant formula and a maximum 2.5 mg per kg for liquid milk, milk powder and food products containing at least 15 percent milk.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is actively promoting the relief of tension in Gaza, and China is ready to work with the international community to bring all the parties concerned back to the negotiation table at an early date in a bid to achieve the peaceful, just and durable settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, a Chinese envoy said here Tuesday.     Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement as he was speaking at the closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the Gaza conflict, which has left more than 900 Palestinians killed and 4,000 others injured.     Zhang told the Security Council that the Chinese special envoy on the Middle East issue, Sun Bigan, began his visit to Egypt, Israel and Palestine on Sunday for mediation for peace in the region.     China is gravely concerned about the growing escalation of tension in Gaza, and it is regrettable to see that the new Security Council resolution, adopted last Thursday to call for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, went unheeded by warring parties, he said.     At present, the top priority is to achieve the full implementation of the UN truce resolution -- the immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a halt to the firing of rockets into Israel by the armed Palestinian faction, and unimpeded access of Gaza to the humanitarian relief goods, he said.     At the Tuesday council meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed 15 council members on his upcoming visit to the Middle East, which will take him to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait.
