KUNMING - A comprehensive research and preservation facility for the germplasm of rare and endangered plants,wild animal species and microorganisms was completed on Sunday in southwest China's Yunnan Province. With an investment of 148 million yuan (US.5 million) over the past two years, the "Southwest China Germplasm Bank of Wild Species" facility was established by the Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) with the help of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). "The bank will be a key player in China's biotech industry and a pioneer in the nation's biodiversity conservation and bioresource development strategy," Chen Zhu, vice president of CAS, said at the inauguration ceremony. According to the KIB, the bank sees itself as a leading storage facility of Asian species within 15 years of its foundation, and expects to make significant contributions to the development of the biotech industry and life science research by providing valuable resources, information and expertise. Within the next five years, the bank is expected to collect 6,450 wild species, 4,000 of which will be plant seed species. Within 15 years, its collection will reach 19,000 species. The bank comprises a seed section, an in-vitro micro-propagation unit, a microorganism bank, an animal germplasm bank, a DNA bank, an information center and a garden. Stretching across an undulating landscape and climatic zones ranging from the tropical to the frigid, Yunnan is home to a multitude of plant species linked together by a complex network of phylogenetic relations, and accounts for more than 50 percent of China's plant diversity.

BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua)-- Personal computer giant Dell Inc. said Thursday that it will raise parts purchases from China by 27.8 percent this year, increasing its presence in the booming market.     Dell is to buy 23 billion U.S. dollars worth of computer components and other equipment from Chinese suppliers this year, compared with 18 billion U.S. dollars in 2007, said Michael Dell, chief executive officer of the PC giant, at a press conference.     However, Dell's Beijing representative office denied reports that the company was planning to buy 29 billion U.S. dollars of computer parts from China in 2009.     To secure a bigger share of the Chinese market, Dell broke with its Internet sales model and sealed a deal in September to sell PCs through the country's top electronics retailer, GOME Electrical Appliances.     Dell saw its PC shipments in China up 54 percent year-on-year in 2007.     The company plans to expand its retail outlets from 45 cities in 2007 to 1,200 by the end of the year.     China, where Dell ranks third in terms of market share, is one of the company's fastest growing markets, said Michael Dell.     Dell has two factories in Xiamen, a coastal city in southeastern Fujian Province, a design center in Shanghai and a customer contact center in Dalian, a northeast coastal city, with more than 6,000 employees in China.     Meanwhile, Dell estimates it will contribute more than 50 billion U.S. dollars to China's gross domestic product (GDP) this year, and provide about 2 million jobs.     Dell also said it would donate 1.7 million yuan (239,436 U.S. dollars) to build six education centers in China to teach computer skills to migrant workers' children.

KUNMING - Altogether 248 students fell sick after eating a school lunch including kidney beans in Southwest China's Yunnan Province on Thursday, local authorities confirmed early on Friday.Investigators suspected the beans were undercooked.The students, from Zhuyuanzhen Township High School in Fuyuan County, complained of vomiting and nausea late Thursday afternoon and were put under medical observation at night, a spokesman with the Fuyuan County government said.By 8:00 am on Friday, about 170 students were still under observation at four local hospitals.Hospital sources said none of the cases was critical.Kidney beans contain lectin, a toxic agent that can cause diarrhea if the beans aren't heated thoroughly, according to health officials.

The prestigious seat of higher learning, long known for its tradition of innovation, launched the academic-gown designing contest on Thursday. The criterion: the costume has to be traditionally Chinese. The top design could become a must at the university's graduation ceremony in the not-so-distant future, according to the university's Communist Youth League committee, which is in charge of students' activities. "If the gown proves a success, we could introduce it in other universities, too," committee director Han Liu said. The contestants, students and teachers both, have been asked to submit their gown and cap designs before June 8. After the preliminary eliminations, the selected costumes will be displayed at this year's graduation ceremony on July 3. "It's an innovation because students in all Chinese colleges today use the same Western-style gown," said Lu Peng, another committee official. "It's also part of our campaign to promote culture and tradition on campus." Colleges students used to wear different types of gowns at the graduation ceremony till the State Council's Academic Degrees Committee promoted a standard one, the Western-style gown, in 1994. The degrees committee, however, told China Daily on Friday that it was not compulsory for all colleges to use the same gown. Scholars and students have been asking if Chinese people should wear traditional clothes on important occasions, such as graduation ceremonies. Yichang - Construction of a tunnel under the Yangtze River that will form part of a gas pipeline project running from Sichuan Province to Shanghai was completed Monday.The 1.4-km, 3.08-m diameter tunnel sits 20 m beneath the riverbed and connects two wells on either side of the river in Yichang city, Hubei Province, Liu Juzheng, head of the Hubei section of the pipeline, said.With a total length of 2,203 km, the pipeline will serve as an "energy artery" as part of the West-East gas project, Liu said.The pipeline is expected to channel 12.1 billion cu m of natural gas a year from the Puguang field in Sichuan to central and eastern regions of the country, including Chongqing Municipality, the provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Jiangxi, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and Shanghai Municipality.The tunnel, which took 325 days to complete, is the first of five to be built under the Yangtze.Industry experts say the new pipeline, which will cost 62.7 billion yuan (.4 billion) to build, will provide an opportunity to develop western regions based on their rich natural resources.Chen Deming, vice-minister of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said the pipeline will be completed in late 2010 and the gas it transports will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by tens of millions of tons a year.Figures from the China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) put Puguang's proven reserves at 356.1 billion cu m. The country has total proven natural gas reserves of about 2.66 trillion cu m.The government has been promoting the use of natural gas to improve energy efficiency and reduce air pollution.Under an NDRC proposal on natural gas development, the government plans to increase the natural gas pipeline network to 44,000 km by 2010 to meet demand.Although China's natural gas output will reach 94 billion cu m in 2010, up from 58.6 billion in 2006, an additional 16 billion cu m a year will still have to be imported to meet demand, Sinopec said.In Shanghai, demand for natural gas soared from 4 million cu m in 2003 to 1.9 billion in 2005.In 2004, China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) opened its West-East gas pipeline, which runs more than 4,000 km and channels 1.2 billion cu m of gas a year to Shanghai from the Tarim Basin in the country's westernmost region of Xinjiang.CNPC is to build a second West-East pipeline to carry gas imported from central Asia to the Pearl and Yangtze river deltas. BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's economy would moderate but remain robust in 2008 with a growth rate of 10.7 percent, providing a cushion against the expected international downturn, according to a forecast issued by the United Nations commission here on Thursday.     "Investment continues to be the main driver of growth, remaining resilient despite government cooling measures and with support from low real interest rates," said a report released by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).     "A slowdown in exports and the country's efforts to cool the economy are the main reasons for the moderation," it said.     Other factors expected to underpin China's growth include domestic demand, increasing spending power of rural consumers and rising consumption through higher government spending on social welfare.     Official statistics show China's gross domestic product growth accelerated to 11.4 percent in 2007, the fastest for 13 years.     The report said the U.S. sub-prime mortgage crisis is not expected to have a strong impact on growth in China.     "In a worst case scenario where the U.S. economy goes into recession, the impact on China will not be as great as on other Asia-Pacific countries. Due to its blistering pace, China's growth will remain resilient, but will slow," said Shuvojit Banerjee, a senior expert with the UNESCAP.     According to the report, China's increasing exports to the European Union are expected to compensate for a steady fall in exports to the United States, China's second largest export market. China has also witnessed a boom in trade with Africa.     It said Chinese and other Asia-Pacific investors are playing a key role in supporting developed countries through the turmoil. Sovereign wealth funds and state investment institutions from the region have bolstered weakened banking sectors in the United States and the Europe.     The report said China is facing an increasing challenge from inflation. The chief inflationary concerns lie in higher international oil and food prices. "Rising food prices are a bigger inflationary concern than oil prices because food accounts for a far higher proportion of consumer spending. Food price inflation particularly hits low income households."     The report also warned that the fast growth is coming at an increasing cost to the environment.
