MILAN, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in the Italian city of Milan on Monday for an official goodwill visit to the country.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), began his tour in Italy at the invitation of Italian Senate President Renato Schifani and Chamber of Deputies President Gianfranco Fini.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu said China is ready to work with Italy to maintain the sound momentum of practical cooperation so as to make contributions to overcoming the international financial crisis and spurring the recovery of the world economy. Wu Bangguo (R Front), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, arrives in Milan on May 18, 2009 at the start of an official goodwill visit to Italy    Wu is scheduled to meet with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as well as heads of both houses of the Italian parliament and other Italian leaders to exchange views on bilateral relations and other regional and international issues of common concern.     Wu is also to visit a research and development center of the Italian National Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment (ENEA), which shows China's interest in using European technologies to improve energy efficiency of its economy.     After Chinese President Hu Jintao's attendance at the London G20 summit in April and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's Europe tour in January, Wu is yet another senior Chinese leader to visit Europe in the past few months.     Against the background of the worsening global financial crisis, Wu's visit highlighted the importance that China attaches to cooperation with Europe in addressing global challenges.     Italy, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G8 group, will host a summit between the leaders of G8 nations and developing countries in June. Hu is expected to attend the meeting.     Wu's visit coincides with a G8 environment ministers meeting that is to be held in Italy on May 22.     China and Italy have witnessed smooth development of bilateral ties in recent years. Berlusconi visited Beijing for the Asia-Europe summit last October.     Besides Milan, Wu is also to visit Rome, Florence and Venice. Italy is the final leg of Wu's three-nation Europe tour, which had already taken him to Russia and Austria. 

BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Taiwan-based Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung and his delegation at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Monday afternoon.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the cross-Straits relationship had made breakthroughs after a historic turning point in the past year.     Improved relations had yielded practical benefits for people on both sides, and cross-Straits peace and stability had been highly praised by the international community, said Jia. BRUSSELS, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The number of civilian deaths in Afghanistan went down by 39 percent in the first three months of 2009 compared to the same period a year before, NATO said on Wednesday.     NATO spokesman James Appathurai said 81 percent of the civilian deaths were caused by the Talilban-led insurgents and 19 percent by international troops in the first three months of 2009. He did not give the overall number of civilian deaths in this period.     A total of 1,240 civilians were killed in 2008 in Afghanistan and the Taliban and other militant groups were responsible for 80 percent of them, according to NATO counts. But the UN mission in Afghanistan said more than 2,100 civilians were killed last year.     "It is important to note that despite the increase in (the numbers of) international forces, efforts to reduce the numbers of civilian casualties are having an effect," said Appathurai.     He said NATO and the Afghan security forces will establish about three dozen joint coordination centers throughout the country by mid-summer to coordinate military support and security support for the presidential and provincial elections in August.     Four battalions of extra troops will be deployed by mid-summer to help secure the elections. The extra troops will stay long enough in case a presidential run-off is needed in early October, he said.

GUANGZHOU, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Molave hit land in south China early Sunday, with heavy rain forecast in most parts of the Guangdong Province in the following two days, local observatory said.     Molave, the 6th tropical storm this year which became typhoon, landed at Nanao town in Shenzhen City of Guangdong Province at 0:50 a.m. Sunday Beijing Time, with winds up to 145 km per hour in its eye.     Strong gales and heavy rains hit Shenzhen City, resulting in water flowing on streets. However, as residents and vehicles were scare during the night, the weather had no major impact on local people's living yet. QINGDAO, April 20 (Xinhua) -- China's senior navy officer said here Monday that the international fleet review to be held in east port city Qingdao on Thursday is aimed at promoting understanding about China's military development.     Ding Yiping, deputy commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview that the review would serve as a platform for navies from other countries to increase their understanding about China and the Chinese navy.
