UNITED NATIONS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called for the peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations.     La Yifan, minister-counselor of China's Permanent Mission to the UN, told a Security Council meeting that China has always called for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations in a peaceful manner.     "China always believes that resolving this issue through diplomatic means is in the interest of peace and security in the Middle East and is in the common interest of the international community," he said.     La said China is ready to continue to play a constructive role in this regard.     At present, "rare opportunities" exist with regard to the restart of the negotiations with Iran over the nuclear issue, he said.     La called on Iran to strengthen its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to resolve outstanding issues as early as possible.     He also urged the international community to seize the opportunity to intensify diplomatic efforts so as to ensure an early start of the negotiations.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China's political advisors brainstormed Wednesday on the country's economic development and offered suggestions about coping with the impact of the global downturn.     They gave their advice as the standing committee of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee continued its sixth meeting, which started Tuesday.     Li Yining, a renowned economist and one of the members of the standing committee, said restructuring and innovation were pivotal for an economic recovery. Once the problems of fair play and difficulty in financing were solved for private companies, their potential for innovation would emerge.     Other proposals ranged from fostering new growth poles to solving social disputes.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, was present at the meeting.     He said Tuesday that maintaining steady, relatively fast economic development and safeguarding social stability and harmony were the foremost tasks facing China, and he asked the participants to focus their discussions on these themes and make valuable suggestions.

URUMQI, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The violence-torn Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is plodding on the road to recovery amid vigilance one week after the violence in its capital city of Urumqi that left 184 people dead and 1,680 injured.     Police with riot gears were inspecting checkpoints, combing coaches for runaway suspects involved in the deadly violence.     Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said in his tour to the autonomous region on Sunday that to maintain social stability is the top concern of the livelihood of the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang for the time being.     The regional government chairman Nur Berkri said in a televised speech Sunday afternoon that the number of people injured in violence on July 5 had risen to 1,680.     Altogether 216 of the 939 hospitalized are seriously injured and 74 injured fatally, he said.     An oil tank explosion occurred at a chemical plant in Urumqi Sunday morning. Police ruled out the possibility of intentional sabotage after on-the-spot investigation but said the reason of the explosion needs further investigation.     At the suburb of Aksu City, people who flocked into the Uygur bazaar, Toksun, as the local residents called it, said they had felt something different.     "There are much fewer people compared with what it was before the violence," said Tunxunjiang Tuohuniyazi, a local Uygur who were visiting the bazaar with his wife.     "On my way here, I saw a lot of policemen," he said. "But I understand it. The heavy security helps ensure our safety."     The bazaar, which boasts 3,000 stands, only saw a little more than 500 of them in business on Sunday.     Tuniyazi Yiming, a vender busy baking dumplings, said his turnover halved with number of the bazaar visitors on such a sharp decline.     The same bleak business picture could be seen in the border city of Kashgar in southern Xinjiang, where markets and bazaars reported only a few visitors.     Also hurt is the the region's tourism. Sources with the Urumqi Municipal government told Xinhua that because of the riot, 1,184 tour groups had cancelled their plans to visit the city as of Sunday.     They involved 74,218 travelers, including 10,731 tourists from overseas.     Railway authorities said Sunday that situation in the Urumqi's train terminal is normal.     The passenger volume was reported at 21,000 persons at the station on Sunday, 4,000 fewer than Saturday.     "There are no so-called 'waves of refugees' and ticket scalpers reported by some overseas journalists in the train terminal," said Chen Kai, vice chief of the South Train Station of Urumqi.     In Urumqi, thousands of youngsters have expressed their willingness to serve the city by signing up to be volunteers.     "Two days after the hotline was launched, we have received more than 1,600 calls," said Yu Yinglong, head of the Volunteer Association in Urumqi. "They volunteered to serve in hospitals and to give psychological help to those who were traumatized in the violence."     "The Koran teaches us that Muslims should be united. It teaches us to live in harmony with non-Muslims as well. BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The China Ping An Insurance (Group), which had plans to buy a 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) stake in Shenzhen Development Bank (SDB), said Sunday that there are no changes in buying into the bank for the moment.     There are no changes in the bank, and the stake purchase aims to improve Ping An's financial service and asset structure, said Zhang Zixin, general manager of the China's second largest insurer via a telephone news conference.     Ping An and SDB will operate with their own plans. The management team of the bank will not change right now, according to the Frank Newman, president of SDB, and Richard Jackson, president of the Ping An Bank Co., Ltd.     The company said last Friday it would buy 520 million shares from the U.S.-based TPG's Asian arm Newbridge Capital for 11.45 billion yuan by the end of 2010. Newbridge Capital is currently the top shareholder in Shenzhen Development Bank.     The Ping An would acquire no more than a 30 percent stake in Shenzhen Development Bank after the two deals, and become the top shareholder instead.     The Ping An Group, together with Ping An Life Insurance, currently holds a 4.68 percent stake in Shenzhen Development Bank.

XI'AN, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese archaeologists started a new excavation of the famous terracotta army site Saturday, hoping to find more clay figures and unravel some of the mysteries left behind by the "First Emperor."     It was the third excavation in the pit -- the first and largest of three pits at the site near Xi'an, capital of northwestern Shaanxi Province -- since 1974 when the terracotta army was discovered by peasants digging a well. Archeologists began the third large-scale excavation of the Terra-cotta Warriors on June 13, China's fourth Cultural Heritage Day, after a halt of over 20 years.FIRST DAY: "BETTER THAN THOUGHT"     The new dig began at 1 p.m. Saturday, which marks the country's fourth Cultural Heritage Day, and it lasted about five hours on the first day.     "The most important discovery today is two four-horse chariots that are standing in tandem very closely," said Cao Wei, deputy curator of the Qinshihuang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum.     "It is the first time for us to find such an existence in the excavation history," Cao said. Archaeologists soon used plastic sheets to cover them for protection.     Richly colored clay figures were unearthed from the mausoleum of Qinshihuang in the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.- 207 B.C.), the first emperor of a united China, in previous excavations, but once they were exposed to the air they began to lose their luster and turn an oxidized grey.     "From what we have excavated today, the preservation of the cultural relics is better than thought," said Xu Weihong, head of the excavation team. Archaeologists work at the excavation site of No. 1 pit of the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses of Emperor Qin Shihuang, in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, June 13, 2009.Also Saturday, deputy curator Cao told reporters that the state ministration has approved a five-year excavation plan submitted by the museum.     "We plan to dig about 2,000 square meters in the coming five years," Cao said.     NEW DISCOVERIES EXPECTED     Archaeologists hoped they might find a clay figure that appeared to be "in command" of the huge underground army, said Liu Zhancheng, head of the archeological team under the terracotta museum.     "We're hoping to find a clay figure that represented a high-ranking army officer, for example," he told Xinhua earlier.     Liu and his colleagues are also hoping to ascertain the success of decades of preservation efforts to keep the undiscovered terracotta figures intact and retain their original colors.     Most experts believe the pit houses a rectangular army of archers, infantrymen and charioteers that the emperor hoped would help him rule in the afterlife.     But Liu Jiusheng, a Chinese historian in Xi'an, claims it was an army of servants and bodyguards rather than warriors. His argument is still not widely accepted by other terracotta experts.     The army is still known to most Chinese people as the "terracotta warriors and horses."     The army was one of the greatest archeological finds of modern times. It was discovered in Lintong county, 35 km east of Xi'an, in 1974 by peasants who were digging a well.     The first formal excavation of the site lasted for six years from 1978 to 1984 and produced 1,087 clay figures. A second excavation, in 1985, lasted a year and was cut short for technical reasons.     The discovery, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO in December 1987, has turned Xi'an into one of China's major tourist attractions.

JINAN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has encouraged domestic enterprises to make breakthroughs in science and technology development to weather the global financial crisis.     Wen made the remarks during his inspection tour in east China's Shandong Province from Saturday to Sunday. It had been the Premier's fourth consecutive weekend inspection tour outside Beijing this month.
