People on both sides should have broader and deeper exchanges to increase mutual understanding and achieve more common ground.     He pledged that the People First Party will continue to actively promote the cross-Strait relations.     Yok Mu-ming said the mainland and Taiwan should increase technical exchanges and industrial cooperation on agriculture and fishery to create an "economic miracle" for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

It will continue to develop friendly cooperation with countries around the world on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence, the president said.     The country will also continue to work with nations globally to strive to build a harmonious world with lasting peace and common prosperity, he said.     The business circles of Singapore voiced their belief that a stable and prosperous China would bring benefits to the region and the world as a whole.     They also expressed the willingness to continue to play an active role in advancing mutually beneficial cooperation and bilateral ties between Singapore and China.     Trade between China and Singapore reached 52.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, up 10.5 percent year-on-year.     Up until now, Singapore has made investments worth more than 40 billion U.S. dollar in China. It has become one of the top overseas investment destinations for Chinese companies.

HOHHOT, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Police said Tuesday they had shot and killed an escaped prisoner and apprehended three others in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     The four escaped on Saturday from the No. 2 Prison in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia, after killing a prison guard, said a spokesman from the regional public security department.     Acting on information from local residents, police surrounded the men in Helin County early Tuesday, after they had hijacked a motor tricycle and taken the woman driver hostage.     Police shot dead Gao Bo, who resisted arrest and injured a police officer with knife, said the spokesman. Police searched thousands of hotels, nightclubs and Internet bars, questioned 47,500 people and stopped 24,600 vehicles.     The four prisoners were on the run for only 66 hours before they were apprehended.     "We appreciate the local residents' help in hunting the prisoners," said Zhao Liping, head of the public security department of the region." BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's central government launched 20 venture capital funds with seven local governments on Friday to provide investment in the country's high-tech sectors, the top economic planner said in a statement on its web site.     The investment would go to high-tech sectors including the electronic and information sector, biological and pharmaceutical industry, new energy sector and projects related to energy conservation and environmental protection, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said.     The 20 funds would collect about nine billion yuan (1.31 billion U.S. dollars), of which, one billion yuan was invested by the central government, 1.2 billion yuan by local governments and the rest from private investment, the NDRC said.     The funds were aimed to direct capital into new industries and competitive high-tech enterprises to push forward self-innovation, it said.     The NDRC and the Ministry of Finance signed the agreement with 7 local governments of Beijing, Jilin, Shanghai, Anhui, Hunan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Justices in China's Supreme People's Court, as well as judges in local courts, will start working side by side with anti-corruption supervisors from Monday.     On Friday, 14 full time supervisors were installed in the Supreme People's Court (SPC) to oversee judges, court-order enforcers and other court staff.     The SPC said in a statement Sunday that 24,521 anti-corruption supervisors had been in place in 2,392 courts across the country.     In local courts, the posts of anti-corruption supervisors were concurrently held by senior judges, it said.     The system was born out of the efforts "to better combat corruption and redress injustices in a timely manner," said Shen Deyong, SPC executive vice-president.     The Supreme People's court had issued a tentative measure to facilitate coordination between the internal check system and external supervision departments, said the statement.     It also said courts across China would work to optimize the system with measures such as appointing more supervisors and setting up regular exchange and appraisal systems for anti-corruption supervisors.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Beijing saw smooth flow of traffic Monday, the first workday of 2010, after a snow storm Sunday caused traffic breakdown in the national capital.     The city's bus and subway services went smoothly on Monday, with no gridlock and serious traffic accidents reported, according to the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau.     During the peak hours on Monday morning, the Beijing Subway Operating Company dispatched 20 additional subway trains to ease the passenger flow.     The early bus of all routes started off on time in the morning, according to the Beijing Public Transport Holdings.     Most of the bus services ran smoothly, while only 19 lines leading suburban mountainous areas were suspended, it said.     From 9:00 p.m. Saturday to 8:00 a.m. Monday, more than 20,000 sanitation workers were dispatched to clean the snow in the city's main roads with 15,710 tonnes of snow-dissolving agent, said Zhang Zhiqiang, an official with the Beijing Environmental Sanitation Group Co., Ltd.     By 9:00 a.m., all expressways in Beijing reopened to traffic, while some national and municipal highways were shut down due to the slippery road conditions.     The vehicle flow in Beijing was reduced Monday after authorities announced on Sunday that classes in primary and middle schools would be suspended on Monday, and urged institutions and companies to stagger their work time.     However, transportation in eastern Shandong Province and northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was seriously affected by the heavy snow.     By 9:30 a.m. Monday, many expressways in Shangdong were closed and 19 flights cancelled in the Yantai International Airport.     In Inner Mongolia, 13 trains were delayed Monday in Hohhot, the regional capital, said the Hohhot railway authorities.     The No. 1820 train, carrying more than 800 passengers, started off at 5:10 p.m. after being stranded for 12 hours, they said.
