ANCHORAGE, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Saturday met with Alaska Governor Sean Parnell here before winding up his week-long official goodwill visit to the United States.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, said he was glad to have Alaska as the final stop in his visit to the United States.     Apart from meeting with U.S. government and parliament officials, Wu said he also conducted comprehensive contacts with people from all walks of life in the U.S. during his stay.     The major topics included how to strengthen the Sino-U.S. cooperation, how to join hands to face challenges and how to realize common development of the two countries, Wu said. He and Wu had a good conversation on topics ranging across renewable energy, environmental conservation, natural resources development, Alaska seafood and tourism opportunities, he added.     At the invitation of U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Wu started to visit the U.S. on Sept. 6. His trip to the United States was the first official visit to America by a top Chinese legislator in the past two decades.     Wu met with U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the stay.     Before visiting the Unites States, Wu has visited Cuba and the Bahamas.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Russian Prime Minister Putin said here on Tuesday that Russia and China are working on a huge oil and gas cooperation project.     In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Putin said the two countries have signed a 20-year oil supply agreement and laid more than 2,000 kilometers of crude oil pipelines for this. It was the name given to the illegal practice of getting items across the border without official customs approval.     The illegal practice would make the government unable to supervise domestic industries and lead to bankruptcies and unemployment, which might cause more troubles to the society against the backdrop of the financial crisis, he said.     Putin called upon the two countries to establish a set of unified rules, which would be obeyed by both sides, so as to achieve a just, sound and civilized mechanism of cooperation.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese ambassador to Brazil Chen Duqing said Saturday China may play a significant role in Riode Janeiro's preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games.     "Compared with the other applicants, currently Rio de Janeiro still has a lot to do to improve its sports facilities and other infrastructure, which indicates a special opportunity for Chinese companies," Chen told Xinhua Saturday in an exclusive interview.     The costs of preparing for the event in 2016 are estimated at roughly 12 billion U.S. dollars. BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will implement a nation-wide investigation to find more research and development (R&D) resources to promote the country's agriculture, manufacturing, information technologies and other major industries.      The investigation will provide basic scientific data for policy-making of the nation's social and economic development during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), the Ministry of Science and Technology said in a circular on its official website Saturday.     It will also help the government monitor and evaluate the ability to make independent innovation as an effort to make China an innovation-oriented country, it said.     Six ministries and commissions of the State Council, China's Cabinet, will jointly conduct and finish the investigation by the end of the year. The first such investigation was conducted in 2000.     Statisticians around the nation will survey R&D-intensive enterprises and institutions in all the major industries.     The survey will focus on the personnel, spending, equipment, projects and institutions for research and development.     Moreover, many experts believe the investigation will help China stop wasteful spending in scientific research and promote the national sharing of resources, such as to stop squandering money in redundant purchases of laboratory equipment.     China's 2008 research and development spending of the GDP was 457 billion yuan (66.9 billion U.S.     dollars), an increase of 23.2 percent from 2007, accounting for 1.52 percent of the annual GDP.

UNITED NATIONS, July 29 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said here on Wednesday that he was pleased with what China is doing to contain climate change and what the Asian country will do in negotiations that will lead to an agreement at the Copenhagen summit on climate change in December.     Ban told his monthly press conference that "I was pleased that (Chinese) President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao assured me that China wants to seal a deal in Copenhagen in December and that China will play an active and constructive role in the negotiations to achieve this end."     During his meeting with the Chinese leaders, "we also agreed on the importance of global leaders showing the way and discussed in detail the Climate Change Summit in New York on Sept. 22," Ban said.     "I wanted to highlight the special responsibility of countries like China to lead the global fight against climate change, as well as highlight all that China is doing," he said. "Come September, we will be entering a crucial stage on climate change."     "Climate change was the major focus of my trip to Asia," he said.     "In particular, I helped to launch an ambitious program to promote energy saving lighting which could reduce China's energy consumption by 8 percent," he said.
