SHANGHAI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama will start his four-day China visit Sunday in Shanghai, and the highlight of his visit in the eastern city will be broadcast live by Xinhuanet, the online news service of the Xinhua News Agency.     This is Obama's first visit to China since he took office in the White House more than a year ago.     Obama is scheduled to meet with Chinese youth on Monday in Shanghai, during which he will pick up a number of questions out of more than 3,200 put forward by China's Internet users over the past two days.     The whole event will be broadcast live online, according to the Xinhuanet.     Obama will arrive in Beijing on Monday afternoon.

BEIJING, Oct. 26 -- Shanghai has applied to regulators to launch a free exchange between the yuan and the New Taiwan dollar to enhance financial cooperation, the head of the Shanghai Financial Service Office said Sunday.     "With growing trade between Shanghai and Taiwan in recent years, we hope that a free exchange between the yuan and the New Taiwan dollar can be conducted in Shanghai as a trial," said Fang Xinghai at the 6th China International Finance Forum.     "We have applied to the regulators and expect it will be approved soon," Fang said at the two-day forum which ended Sunday.     Shanghai has recently launched a cross-border currency clearing system and Fang expects that it will be extended to Taiwan soon.     By the end of April, Taiwan had invested 5 billion U.S. dollars in more than 6,000 projects in Shanghai, and trade between the two sides totaled 13.68 billion dollars in the first eight months of this year.     Although the two sides must overcome some barriers in financial cooperation, Fang said they can explore possibilities in innovative products, such as exchange-traded funds that enable investors to buy or sell shares in an entire benchmark portfolio.     "The Shanghai Stock Exchange is making efforts to introduce ETFs based on overseas equity indices (and) we can also expect Taiwan and the mainland to introduce ETFs based on each other's index," Fang said.     The two sides can also cooperate in sectors that are not directly supervised by the central government, such as venture capital.     "Taiwan is very successful in the venture capital sector, while the Chinese mainland is still in the first stage. Policies have now been eased so that Taiwan VC firms can set up branches on the mainland," Fang noted.     The Chinese mainland and Taiwan in April sealed a cooperative financial regulatory mechanism.

PARIS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The preparation for the 2010 Shanghai Expo has proceeded into exhibits arrangements and service operation as site constructions are mostly completed, China's representatives of Executive Committee of the Shanghai Expo announced here Tuesday in its last report of progress in the 146thGeneral Assembly of the Bureau of International Exhibition (BIE).     With less than six months ahead of the 2010 Shanghai Expo, all preparation on construction and operation are underway smoothly as scheduled, said Yang Xiong, the deputy director of the executive committee for Shanghai Expo and vice mayor of Shanghai.     Transportation infrastructures inside and outside the Expo site will basically finished by the year end and put into use by the end of next March. Supporting public utilities such as medical treatment, drinking water and communication are also steadily in progress, the report said.     Five permanent structures, namely China Pavilion, Performance Center, Expo Center Theme Pavilion and Expo Boulevard will be completed by the year ends. Twenty-six out of the 42 self-built pavilions of foreign participants have completed their structure and 37 out of 42 rented pavilions were accomplished. All the 11 joint pavilions have been completed by now.     By Dec. 1, over 3,400 rooms in apartments in the Expo Village and service apartments in the surrounding areas will be put into service, and the number will reach 6,700 at the end of the year and 7,100 by the end of next March, the report said.     "As major parts of the construction work has finished, we have shifted our focus to operation, such as service, exhibits arrangement and further design and organization of events and forums," Yang told Xinhua.     During the grand cultural events, about 20,000 sessions of various performances will be staged. To date, 200 countries and international organizations have submitted application for National Day and Honor Day events, totaling 633 performances.     The Expo is not only a carnival for China, but also a showcase for worldwide extraordinary culture and innovations. "The success of World Expo 2010 is bound to help rebuild the global confidence in economic development, and further promote international exchange and cooperation," said Wang Jinzhen, chief delegate of China to the BIE.     To provide better service for foreign participants, four management departments has formed with professionals and experts to be deployed in different zones to improve on-spot service.     Additionally, during the Expo, about 200,000 volunteers selected from current 500,000 applications will offer services in the sites, on city streets, at airports and docks for visitors from across the world.     Chinese delegation issued invitation to friends all over the world at the assembly.     "I think their preparations (for the Shanghai Expo) are progressing very very well," Secretary General of the BIE Vicente Loscertales told Xinhua. TAICHUNG, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Letting in more mainland investors again hit the agenda in Taiwan as negotiators from two sides discussed mainland investment with local business people Wednesday.     At the symposium, Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), suggested Taiwan should not be "afraid" of competitors. When the mainland began to open up, the enterprises and industries also worried that they would be beaten by overseas competitors, but 30 years after, they not only survived but also became stronger, Chen said. "The restrictions will prevent mainland companies from enjoying fair competition."     She cited the complicated procedure that mainland businessmen had to undergo to travel to Taiwan.     "We have invested in an IT firm in Taiwan. Research work requires cooperation between staff on both sides and they have to travel a lot across the Strait. When there is an emergency, our mainland staff always could not go to Taiwan promptly," she said. "In a world of tough competition, we should not sacrifice efficiency."     Many mainland companies are interested in real estate development, finance and telecommunication that are still not on the list.     Long Ge, vice president of Shanghai Xiandai Architectural Design Group, just finished a business tour in Taiwan.     "We hope to set up an office in Taiwan in near future," Long said.     His company hoped to launch real estate businesses, not only design but also construction and marketing, in Taiwan. "But we cannot if the restrictions remain there," he said.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese mainland official on Wednesday urged media organizations across the Taiwan Strait to cover more stories on cross-Strait relations and report news events in an objective and comprehensive manner.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks in a meeting with a group of Taiwan media representatives led by Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     Media organizations play an irreplaceable role in promoting information exchanges, helping people on both sides better understand each other and eliminating estrangement, Jia said.     In light of the bright prospect of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, media exchanges between the two sides are facing unprecedented opportunities, he said.     Jia called for an early establishment of resident media bureaus on both sides and closer cooperation between news organizations to promote traditional Chinese culture.     He encouraged the staff of the media industry to seek common ground while shelving differences.     On behalf of the SEF and the people in Taiwan, Chiang expressed gratitude for the mainland's donations and assistance after the island was hit by Typhoon Morakot in August.     Mainland's donations, which were transferred to Taiwan mainly through the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), will be used for reconstruction in Taiwan, Chiang said.     Chiang also stressed the need for media at both sides to carry out further communication and cooperation.     According to Jia, the ARATS and the SEF had initially agreed to have the fourth round of talks in Taiwan's Taichung in mid or late December.
