BEIJING, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Senior public security officials from China and Russia met here Friday, vowing to enhance cooperation and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.     This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China as well as the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Russia diplomatic ties, said China's Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu in a meeting with the Director of the Federal Security Guard Service of Russia Yevgeni Murov.     He praised the successful cooperation between the two countries' public security departments in the past years and called on the two sides to further enhance law enforcement cooperation within the framework of bilateral relations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).     Murov said China had accumulated valuable experience in safeguarding public security during the Beijing Olympics and the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China.     Russia is willing to learn such experience from China and hoped to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China's Ministry of Public Security, he noted.

TAIPEI, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou vowed Wednesday that he will push forward the reform of the Kuomintang (KMT) "at full speed" four days after he took the position of the party's chairman.     He said his aim of running for the chairman was to guarantee closer cooperation between the party and the administrative authorities to make the administrative work more effective.     Ma made the remarks Wednesday at the first conference for the Central Standing Committee of the KMT since he took the position.     Ma stressed that it is now a key period to strengthen the relations between the party and the administrative authorities as the island's economy is showing signs of revival.     During the conference, the party approved a decision to remove two officials from their newly-elected positions as the members of the KMT Central Standing Committee for being involved in vote-buying.

CHENGDU, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China will send two giant pandas to Australia Friday for a cooperative research program.     The four-year-old male panda "Wang Wang" and three-year-old female panda "Fu Ni" will stay in Australia for 10 years, said Zhang Hemin, chief of the Wolong Nature Reserve Administration in southwest China's Sichuan Province.     "Wang Wang", which means "net" in Chinese, is 119 kg and "Fu Ni", which means "lucky girl", is 90 kg. They were quarantined on Oct. 21 for their trip to Australia.     "Wang Wang" and "Fu Ni" were transferred to the Bifengxia Giant Panda Breeding Center in Ya'an City after the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center where they were living were destroyed in the May 12 massive earthquake in 2008.     The Australian side had sent veterinaries and feeders of the two pandas to China for training. It had also set up a 10 hectares bamboo planting base, Zhang said.     The two pandas will receive a body check Tuesday before their departure.     China and Australia made an agreement in 2007 on the cooperative research.     Giant pandas, known for being sexually inactive, are among the world's most endangered animals due to shrinking habitat.     There are about 1,590 pandas living in China's wild, mostly in Sichuan and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Friday urged geologists to make full use of the country's rich resources and explore new energy in innovative ways.     "Geological work makes the basic and pioneer industry for economic and social development and it affects the country's overall modernization... We should mainly depend on our own power to increase energy supply," said Li at the ceremony for the country's top geological science awards.     A total of 14 geologists from the geological exploration, research and education fields received the 11th Li Siguang Geological Science Award. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States have agreed to continue dialogue and cooperation in macroeconomic and financial policies as the recovery of the global economy remains unsteady, Chinese President Hu Jintao told the press here on Tuesday after his talks with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     Hu said he and President Obama exchanged views on the current global financial situation and held that given the positive signs of the recovering global economy, the foundation of it was far from solid.     "We both agreed to properly handle trade frictions between the two countries through negotiations on an equal basis, and to make concerted efforts to boost bilateral trade and economic ties in a healthy and steady way," said Hu.     "I stressed to President Obama that under the current situation, both China and the United States should oppose and resist protectionism in all forms in an even stronger stand," he said.

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Tuesday that China, a developing country, has taken important measures in reducing its emission of greenhouse gas.     "China has also taken quite important measures by cutting forty to forty-five percent of energy intensity by 2020," Ban said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.     Ban arrived here earlier on Tuesday to open a high-level segment of the conference, which entered its ninth day of negotiations on a new global deal to push forward the fight against climate change.     The UN chief said he was fully aware of particular challenges faced by developing countries, in particular poor countries, calling on rich countries to improve their commitments in climate financing.     The climate change negotiations were now in a critical but difficult situation as developed countries and developing countries remain divided on key issues, including climate financing.     Developed countries have been reluctant to provide financial support to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change. So far, they only indicated to give 10 billion U.S. dollars annually in the three years between 2010 and 2012.     Ban said developed countries should go beyond the fast-start support and also address medium and long-term financing scaled up to needs.     "I have been urging that developed countries should begin discussing the medium and long term financial support packages," he said, calling on all countries to overcome national interests or interests of any particular groups.     "That would be one of the keys in bridging the gap between developed and developing countries," he added.     Speaking at the same press conference, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was encouraged by China's move to set national targets of reducing greenhouse gas emission.     "I am very encouraged by the fact that China has proposed, at this stage, nationally binding targets for mitigation which deviates from business as usual," he said.     But he added China should translate those national targets into some kind of international language.

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Monday asked auditors to keep a close eye on public investment projects to help avoid embezzlement and waste of public funds.     Jerry-built projects and vanity projects should be strictly forbidden with the help of closer follow-up scrutiny of public funds, said the premier in a meeting with participants at a national auditing conference.     The National Audit Office (NAO) statistics showed that altogether 234.7 billion yuan (34.51 billion U.S. dollars) of public funds have been misappropriated and 16.3 billion yuan wasted during the first 11 months this year. SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Fourth Ministerial Conference of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC) opened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and African heads of state or government attended the opening ceremony of the two-day conference, with the theme of "deepening the new type of China-Africa strategic partnership for sustainable development."
