PINGYAO, Shanxi, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A photo exhibition exclusively dedicated to Canadian surgeon Henry Norman Bethune opened Saturday at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in north China's Shanxi Province.     Bethune is a household name in China, a country where he saved numerous lives and sacrificed his own in 1939 during China's War of Resistance Against Japanese aggression.     "He is noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people," Chairman Mao wrote in his article In Memory of Norman Bethune.     The exhibition consists of 41 photos of Dr. Bethune living and working in China, some of which had never been shown before.     "As Canadians, we are all proud to be associated with this visionary adventurer and deeply touched by the respect and recognition shown to him here in China," said Canadian Ambassador to China, David Mulroney.     Most of the pictures were provided by Wang Yan, daughter of ShaFei, who was a forefather of China's news photography and a close friend of Bethune.     "I remember that I was touched when I first read about Bethune in my school days and now it feels like looking at the pictures of an old friend who has just passed away," said visitor Wu Jun.     "Many people love Bethune for they have learnt his deeds and spirit in Chairman Mao's article while my affection for him comes from his friendship with my father," Wang said. "Bethune was my father's mentor as he exemplified the essence of communism."     Upon his death Bethune left his Kodak Retina camera to Sha Fei.     Bethune also healed Japanese soldiers, took pictures of them, which were sent back to Japan.     "He wished the Japanese people would protest against the war when they saw how their sons were suffering on battlefield. He was a true humanist," Wang said.     Just before he died, Bethune wrote in a letter, saying that the last two years (those he spent in China) have been the most significant, the most meaningful years of his life.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Russian Prime Minister Putin said here on Tuesday that Russia and China are working on a huge oil and gas cooperation project.     In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Putin said the two countries have signed a 20-year oil supply agreement and laid more than 2,000 kilometers of crude oil pipelines for this. It was the name given to the illegal practice of getting items across the border without official customs approval.     The illegal practice would make the government unable to supervise domestic industries and lead to bankruptcies and unemployment, which might cause more troubles to the society against the backdrop of the financial crisis, he said.     Putin called upon the two countries to establish a set of unified rules, which would be obeyed by both sides, so as to achieve a just, sound and civilized mechanism of cooperation.

VANCOUVER, Aug 3 (Xinhua) -- As China advances its national strategy to reduce carbon and other emission from transportation, the collaboration between Canada's Westport Innovations Inc. and various alternative energy companies in China is expected to be even more, Nicholas Sonntag, president of Westport Asia, said recently.     Sonntag spoke highly of Westport's ongoing operations in China. "Westport has a very positive impression of our cooperation with partners and government officials in China," he told Xinhua in a written interview. "There have been challenges along the way but we have a full time office in Beijing with Chinese staff that has been critical to our strategic and tactical approach to all initiatives we have undertaken in China."     Westport Innovation Inc., a leading global supplier of engine and alternative fuel power technologies that allow large vehicle engines to operate on clean-burning fuels like natural gas or hydrogen, has set up two joint ventures in China. One is BTIC Westport Inc., which produces liquefied natural gas fuel tanks for vehicles, and another is Weichai Westport Inc., which develops advanced alternative fuel engines.     Sonntag, who is also the Westport's Executive Vice President of Corporate Development, suggested Westport's operations in China have benefited from the fact that China has attached growing importance to alternative energy solutions and sustainable development.     "The rapid growth of the Chinese economy has generated opportunities in a variety of sectors and alternative energy solutions to transport is one that has seen rapid growth due to the dramatically increased levels of air pollution resulting from urban development," he said. "This rapid development has certainly presented huge challenges to the policy makers in China."     He noted that despite some setbacks, the overall direction of China's strong growth "has been maintained in a manner that tries to aggressively address the many social, environmental and physical challenges being faced."     "The deep respect and commitment to sustainable development is seen at all levels," he added. "And progress is being made with new and creative policies which are being introduced regularly."     Sonntag has been active in international engineering and sustainable development for over 35 years, working as a senior executive for organizations -- corporate and non-profit -- in China, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. He has spent nearly six years in China, first serving at CH2M HILL -- a global full-service engineering, procurement, construction and operations firm-- as the President of the company's operations in China and Hong Kong, and then as President of Westport Asia. He moved back from Beijing to Westport's headquarters in Vancouver only a few weeks ago.     He has witnessed the changes that China's reform and opening up have brought about. From his perspective, the most notable changes have been "in the areas of legal process in the establishment of new companies and the increased commitment to protect intellectual property."     He said the issues relating to intellectual property have long been a big concern for foreign companies hoping to develop business in China. "They have been important to our investments in China since without assurances on the legal and intellectual property elements of our business, our long term strategies would be unsustainable."     He said a high value on intellectual property has now been seen in China and Chinese partners have developed the awareness of protecting their own intellectual property, adding "their motivation is in line with our motivation."     As for the economic globalization, Sonntag described China's contribution as "immense." He said: "All aspects of our lives are directly or indirectly impacted by China's economic growth. This will undoubtedly continue for many years to come."     He said China has only recently fully understood the implications of its growth on the global economy and is now taking responsibility for the importance of that role. "This presents large opportunities for Chinese and international companies who are cooperating in specific sectors. "     For Westport, he expected the products that its joint ventures in China have manufactured would not only serve the Chinese market, but also the Asian and global markets. LANZHOU, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- A total of 550 primary and middle school students flew back to quake-hit Chinese provinces from Russia Wednesday after completing a three-week recuperative tour.     The teenagers, 340 from Sichuan Province, 110 from Gansu Province and 100 from Shaanxi Province, were invited by the Russian government to recuperate at the "Ocean" All-Russia Children's Care Center in Vladivostok, Far East, since July 23.     The students boasted excellent performance at their schools and demonstrated bravery in the devastating earthquake in May last year. "I enjoyed learning different cultures from them."     On May 12, 2008, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Sichuan and neighboring Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, leaving more than 87,000 dead or missing and more than 370,000 injured.     Since 2008, two batches of more than 1,500 pupils from Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi have been invited to recuperate in Russia. Last year, the first group of 1,018 students went to Russia for rehabilitation.

"Although no clear signs of world economic recovery have emerged and the long-term impact of the international financial crisis cannot be overlooked, we can be confident about a bright future of China-U.S. economic cooperation and trade," said Wu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress. This can be highlighted by two points.     The first point is: the fact that the Chinese and American economies are mutually complementary has not changed.     For China the largest developing country in the world, the top priority is development. Over the past three decades of reform and the opening-up, China's economy has maintained an average annual growth rate of 9.8 percent. It was able to grow by 7.1 percent even in the first half of this year, and is expected to reach the target of around 8 percent growth for the whole year. The accelerated pace of industrialization and urbanization has generated great investment demand in China, which is at the same time a market of 1.3 billion consumers. China's development and huge market provide an inexhaustible source of business opportunities and impetus for the economic recovery and development of all countries, including the United States.     The United States is the largest developed country and accounts for 18.3 percent of the world's total GDP and 43 percent of the world's consumer market. It has a trade volume unmatched in the world and is an obvious leader in science and technology, human resources, managerial expertise and marketing.     "The complementary nature of our two economies has not been changed by the international financial crisis," Wu stated.     The second point is that the foundation of China-U.S. economic cooperation and trade remains strong.     In 2008, bilateral trade amounted to 333.74 billion U.S. dollars, making China and the U.S. each other's second largest trading partners. In the past five years, American exports to China grew by 20 percent annually. Last year, China accounted for 49 percent and 34 percent of American soybean and cotton exports respectively. In cumulative terms, the United States has invested over 61 billion U.S. dollars in 57,000 projects in China. In the first seven months of this year, China and the United States signed 888 technology contracts worth 3.26 billion U.S. dollars, up 41.3 percent year on year. They represents 25.3 percent of the total value of technology introduction contracts signed by China and makes America the largest source of technology for China. Although China-U.S. trade experienced a year-on-year drop in the first half of 2009, the decline is nearly 7 percentage points smaller than that of China's foreign trade as a whole.     "These figures provide sufficient evidence that the China-U.S. economic and trade relationship is one of cooperation and win-win progress, and such a basic pattern has not been changed by the international financial crisis," Wu said.     Second, the economic stimulus plans implemented by China and the United States have created new business opportunities.     To counter the impact of the international financial crisis and maintain steady and relatively fast economic development, the Chinese Government has introduced a proactive fiscal policy and a moderately easy monetary policy and adopted a package plan to further stimulate domestic demand and generate economic growth.     To get out the economic crisis, the U.S. Government has also introduced the biggest economic stimulus package since the 1930s, covering finance, real estate, taxation, infrastructure, the auto industry, environmental protection, energy, science and technology and health care reform, among others.     "The implementation of our respective stimulus plans has offered new business opportunities for economic cooperation and trade between our two countries," Wu said.     Just before the opening of Tuesday's Forum, the two sides signed 41 agreements and contracts on investment and economic and technological cooperation worth a total of 12.38 billion U.S. dollars, involving such areas as new energy and materials, communications, electronics, machinery and tourism, Wu said in his speech.     "This is further evidence of the abundant cooperation opportunities between China and the United States. As long as we work to seek opportunities in this time of crisis, there is a lot we can achieve together," he said.     Third, the economic restructuring strategies of China and the United States will open up new areas of cooperation.     China and the United States are at different stages of economic development, but both face the arduous task of readjustment and are under pressure to adjust their respective economic development models even without an international financial crisis, Wu said.     "The financial crisis, if anything, has only made this task more urgent, " he said.     The U.S. Government wants to adjust the development model while tackling the financial crisis and considers green technologies essential to its efforts to revitalize economic growth, enhance international competitiveness and create jobs. Likewise, China, in its effort to maintain steady and relatively fast economic development, aims to achieve sustainable development while resolving the current difficulties, Wu said.     "We are making great effort to adjust economic structure, upgrade industries and expand domestic demand, especially consumer demand, and transform the economic development model," Wu said.     "As China and the United States restructure our respective economies, we can foster new areas of economic and trade cooperation, especially in the economic and technological fields and between businesses. They may range from low carbon economy, renewable energy, clean energy, clean coal, carbon capture and storage to smart grid, efficient buildings and new energy vehicles," Wu said.     Wu arrived in Arizona on Sunday on the final leg of a three-nation North American tour. LAS VEGAS, the United States, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A record number of Chinese businesses and manufacturers are participating in the annual exhibition of Chinese products in the United States, in a way to show their confidence in the U.S. market and American consumers, a senior Chinese official said here on Monday.     Inaugurating the "China Brand Show 2009" in the Las Vegas International Convention Center, Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said the Chinese government pays much attention to the difficulties its economy is facing amid the global financial crisis.     "Ever since November last year, the Chinese foreign trade has been going down for a consecutive nine months, which complies with the world trade situation in general," said the official.     Stressing that both China and the United States are each other's essential trading partner, Zhong said that the two countries had committed to open more to trade and investment and fight protectionism at the recent China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue, held in Washington, D.C. in July.     On China's domestic efforts to tackle the global economic recession, Zhong said the government has rolled out a huge economic stimulus package, and China's stabilizing and promising economic trend has contributed to the global confidence in an early economic recovery.     "China's GDP enjoyed a 7.1-percent growth in the first half of 2009, bringing the economic slump starting from the fourth quarter last year to an end," said the vice minister.     According to organizers of the annual show, more than 200 enterprises from China are participating this year, to showcase their products during the three-day event that ends on Wednesday.     The show also serves as a promotion event for the 106th China Import and Exports Fair, to be held in Guangzhou from Oct. 12 to Nov. 4 this year, officials said.     The China Import and Export Fair, the country's number one trade fair, has become a platform for enterprises from different countries to do business and one of the key channels for foreign companies to enter the Chinese market.
