HANGZHOU, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Days before its 4,000 employees, mostly migrants, started off upon their annual trips home for the Chinese Lunar New Year, Tiansheng Group, a textile company in the eastern Zhejiang Province, promised pay rises hoping workers would all come back after the holiday."We are expecting a severe shortage of skilled workers this year," said Wei Guoliang, president of the company's trade union. "But it also eats way the competitive edge of thousands of small businesses that used to rely on cheap labor."Besides the worker scarcity, many entrepreneurs are also worrying about the skills and overall quality of their employees.Zhou Xiaoguang, president of a Yiwu-based decoration firm, remembers the dainty products he saw at an exposition in Europe. "Why can't we produce stuff like that? We can spend heavily to buy better equipment and hire better designers, but we don't have high-caliber workers at our production lines."Langsha Group, China's leading producer of socks and stockings, dropped a procurement plan last year for an Italian-made automatic packing machine that could spare the manual work of 30 workers and improve quality."No one is able to run the machine or fix it if it breaks down," said the group's president Weng Rongdi. "Our lack of training for the workers is a big problem.""Like all other Chinese manufacturing companies, we need high-caliber workers if we want to make further breakthroughs," he said.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday called on the Chinese people to pool their strength and resources to make sure the Shanghai World Expo a success.     With just 106 days to go before the Expo opening on May 1, Hu visited the Expo site Friday during an inspection tour in Shanghai.     "Hosting the World Expo is not only a significant event of Shanghai, but also of the whole nation," he said, noting it was both the responsibility of Shanghai and the whole country to hold a successful Expo. BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- China said on Monday protectionism of the United States has "seriously affected" their trade ties and urged it to stop abusing trade remedy measures.The Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian made the comments on the ministry's website in response to recent U.S. decisions to impose anti-dumping duties on electric blankets and wire trays from China and an anti-dumping and anti-subsidy probe into Chinese steel drill pipes."Since the outbreak of the financial crisis, the U.S. trade protectionism has been apparently on the rise, and China has become the biggest victim of U.S. abuse of trade relief measures", said Yao.Yao said a recent accusation by a senior U.S. commerce official that China has set barriers against foreign investment was "totally contrary to the facts."China is the third largest export market of the U.S., and has been the fastest growing one for years. U.S. exports to China reached 77.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, driving down the U.S.-China trade deficit by 16 percent, he said."Absorbing foreign investment is part of China's basic state policy of opening-up," said Yao. "China has always been making efforts to provide a more open and more optimized investment environment for domestic and foreign investors.""Some countries themselves resort to trade protectionism, but turn around and accuse others. This is not only unreasonable but also not good for its own economic recovery," he said.

JINAN, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese vocational school said Monday it has got bored with the repeated reports carried by the New York Times insisting that it was a source of the Google cyber attacks."The reports are too boring, simply unfounded and politically orientated," Li Zixiang, Party chief of the privately-run Lanxiang Vocational School (Lanxiang) in east China's Shandong Province, told Xinhua."We really do not want to read such reports again. If the reporter still has doubts, I invite him to come to our school to talk with us personally," he said.The New York Times has filed two reports recently claiming the cyber attacks on Google and other American firms last year have been traced to Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) and Lanxiang.Google said last month that it might pull out of the Chinese market, citing it services had been hacked by sources originating in China and that it disagreed with some Chinese government policies.In the latest report, the New York Times insisted that Lanxiang had ties with the Chinese military as it was founded on land donated by the army and had sent graduates to join the army."We had indeed used abandoned barracks for teaching venues when our school was founded in 1984, but the barracks were not a 'donation' because we must pay rent regularly for it," Li said."We have already moved out of the old barracks and built our own new teaching buildings," he said.Currently, Lanxiang has more than 20,000 students learning vocational skills such as cooking, auto repair and hairdressing."Like any other country, our school graduates can join the army if they so wish. But you cannot say a school has a military background just because some of its graduates are servicemen," Li said.

BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- "Livelihood issues" are Chinese people's top concerns as shown in on-line polls ahead of the annual parliamentary and political advisory sessions.Chinese netizens have voiced their complaints on-line and hope their voices could be heard by top leaders, national lawmakers and political advisors, who will soon gather in Beijing for the two sessions.Pension, housing and health care are among the top concerns, according to polls conducted by people.com.cn of Party's flagship newspaper People's Daily, xinhuanet.com of Xinhua News Agency and cctv.com of the state-run TV network."Pension" has earned 25,508 votes at people.com.cn, followed by anti-corruption, housing price, the income gap, employment and health care, among others. "Pension" also ranked among the top five concerns at cctv.com.Netizens called for the scraping of the long-time "dual pension scheme," in which civil servants and other public employees were entitled to pensions several times the amount of citizens employed by non-public entities."The current pension scheme widens the wealth gap," a person posted at xinhuanet.com.The amount of pension given to ordinary citizens was determined by one's monthly payment dedicated to their social security account before they retired, and is fixed to the average social income.Retirees of non-public entities get much less than their salary before retirement. But the amount of pension government employees get is almost the same as they got before retirement, sometimes two or three times higher than a factory worker.The government raised the pension for ordinary citizens by 10 percent, or 120 yuan monthly per person, starting from Jan. 1, 2010. GUIYANG, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a partial collapse of an unfinished building Sunday in southwest China's Guizhou Province has risen to seven, the rescue headquarters said.A mold supporting structure in the corridor between two halls at the International Conference and Exhibition Center under construction in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou, collapsed at around 11:30 a.m., burying workers working at the area, said a spokesman for the rescue headquarters.Rescuers found 26 workers who were rushed to hospital. Seven of the workers were proclaimed dead shortly upon arrival at hospital, one more seriously injured.Altogether seven remained hospitalized, and another 12 were discharged from hospital after some treatment.The police were investigating the cause of the accident.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's regulation on the Internet industry is in line with the laws and should be free from unjustifiable interferences, a Chinese government official said here Sunday.A spokesperson with China's State Council Information Office told Xinhua in an exclusive interview, that China is regulating the Internet legally to build a more reliable, helpful information network that is beneficial to economic and social development.Such regulation, the spokesperson said, are based on laws and regulations such as the Constitution, the Law on the Protection of Minors, and the Decision on Internet Safety pass by the National People's Congress Standing Committee.Online information which incites subversion of state power, violence and terrorism or includes pornographic contents are explicitly prohibited in the laws and regulations, the spokesperson said.China has full justification to deal with these illegal and harmful online contents, the spokesperson said.This has nothing to do with the claims of "restrictions on Internet freedom", the spokesperson stressed.Different countries have different conditions and realities, thus they are regulating the Internet in different ways, the spokesperson said.China's regulation on the Internet industry is proved to be suitable for China's national conditions and in line with common practices in most countries as well, the spokesperson said.China is willing to cooperate and exchange opinions on issues about Internet development and management wit other countries, but opposes firmly to any defiance of Chinese laws, or intervening Chinese domestic affairs under the pretence of "Internet management" regardless of the truth, the spokesperson said.According to the spokesperson, as of the end of 2009, the number of netizens in China reached 384 million, and websites topped 3.68 million.China has millions of online forums and more than 200 million blogs, and every day, there are more than four million new blog entries posted online, the spokesperson said.Chinese netizens' right to express opinions within the law is well protected, and their opinions are given full consideration by the government in policy making process, the spokesperson said.
