BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday highly praised the achievement of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) over the past decade, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the region's return to the motherland.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said Macao was "embracing a bright future" thanks to the mainland's support and Macao compatriots' hard work. Hu made the remarks while attending an exhibition in Beijing marking Macao's achievements in the past 10 years.     "Macao has undergone an extraordinary development over the past decade," he said, adding under the support of the central government and the Chinese mainland, the SAR government fully implemented the policies of "one country, two systems", "Macao people governing Macao" with a high degree of autonomy and the Basic Law. ROME, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi announced Chinese culture year in Italy at a press conference at the Chinese embassy here Friday.     The culture year, which follows Italian year in China in 2006, will officially start in September.     "The Chinese culture year in Italy is set to be a central obelisk supporting further exchange between the two countries. It is a crucial project on which both governments have long been working," said Sun.     The ambassador said nine Chinese central government departments and 22 local authorities would be involved in organizing more than100 events all over Italy, including performances of traditional Chinese musical bands, dances and operas. BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese mainland official on Wednesday urged media organizations across the Taiwan Strait to cover more stories on cross-Strait relations and report news events in an objective and comprehensive manner.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks in a meeting with a group of Taiwan media representatives led by Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     Media organizations play an irreplaceable role in promoting information exchanges, helping people on both sides better understand each other and eliminating estrangement, Jia said.     In light of the bright prospect of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, media exchanges between the two sides are facing unprecedented opportunities, he said.     Jia called for an early establishment of resident media bureaus on both sides and closer cooperation between news organizations to promote traditional Chinese culture.     He encouraged the staff of the media industry to seek common ground while shelving differences.     On behalf of the SEF and the people in Taiwan, Chiang expressed gratitude for the mainland's donations and assistance after the island was hit by Typhoon Morakot in August.     Mainland's donations, which were transferred to Taiwan mainly through the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), will be used for reconstruction in Taiwan, Chiang said.     Chiang also stressed the need for media at both sides to carry out further communication and cooperation.     According to Jia, the ARATS and the SEF had initially agreed to have the fourth round of talks in Taiwan's Taichung in mid or late December.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday voiced its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to an EU statement which denounced the execution of two Tibetans convicted of murder in last year's Lhasa riot.     The Swedish EU presidency released a statement Thursday, denouncing the recent death penalty handed down to two Tibetans involved in the Lhasa riot and asking China to abolish the capital sentences.     "We are strongly dissatisfied with and firmly oppose the EU statement," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a news release.     The Lhasa violence involving beating, smashing, looting and burning in 2008 was a sabotage activity "premeditated, organized and masterminded" by the ** Lama group, who instigated Tibetan separatists in and out of China to fuel up the incident, Ma said.     China's legal institutions have carried out fair and open trials and brought only the culprits of the criminal activities to justice, he said. "This was China's internal affair and judicial sovereignty which allows no other country to interfere with."     China asks the EU to abide by the principles of equality and mutual respect and not to send any misleading signals to Tibetan separatists, so as to ensure sound and stable development of EU-China relations, Ma said.

BARCELONA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The top Chinese negotiator for the United Nations climate change talks being held here said Tuesday that the Kyoto Protocol must be followed.     "China's position is quite clear: the Kyoto Protocol must be adhered to, since it best illustrates the principal of 'common but differentiated' responsibilities," said Su Wei, head of the Chinese delegation to the talks.     Su told Xinhua that during earlier negotiations, some countries had proposed discarding the Kyoto Protocol and adopting a totally new document at December's Copenhagen climate change meeting.     "This demand is strongly rejected by the Group of 77 and China, and other developing countries," Su said.     Su stressed that the Kyoto Protocol must be the legal basis for further negotiations at Copenhagen, and developed countries must fulfill their obligations under the protocol, which regulates that they should clarify their reduction targets in the second phase of the protocol.     "If this basic arrangement is changed, the future of the Copenhagen meeting would be greatly shadowed," Su said.     The deal to be reached at the Copenhagen conference, Su said, should have two basic elements.     One element is to set the mid-term emission reduction targets for developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol. That is, developed countries as a whole should commit to making 25-40 percent cuts below 1990 levels by 2020.     The second element is to make substantial arrangements for the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in accordance with the Bali Roadmap.     "We hope we could lay a good foundation for the Copenhagen conference through negotiations at this meeting," Su said.
