BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday called on health authorities to ensure safety in the production, storage, transportation, and inoculation process of the vaccines against A/H1N1 influenza, for the health of the public.     Li made the remarks when visiting the Beijing-based National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, where the country's self-developed vaccines against the A/H1N1 flu are tested. Ltd. in east Zhejiang Province, said some government officials and entrepreneurs had their health and work affected by excessive dining and wining and their health and work.     It is a common practice for Chinese to have banquets or drinking parties when treating important guests, on major occasions and during festivals. Some Chinese have taken advantage of drinking and wining opportunities to seal business deals or seek political favors.     A modest reception could make visitors think that they are not important to the host.     Zhao blamed the social tradition as part of the reason, but added that the lack of supervision and legal loopholes had made the practice continue to prevail.     China has no laws governing the excessive drinking and wining at public expenses.     In October, Fu Pinghong, head of a hospital at Gaoting township in east Zhejiang Province, was sentenced to 11 years in prison on corruption and bribery charges. He had allegedly spent 440,000 yuan (64,433 U.S. dollars) of public funds on drinking, wining and entertaining guests.     Zhao believed that lavishing public funds equalized to embezzlement of state assets and laws should be amended to add the criminal offence of extravagant and wasteful spending.     Laws should be established to regulate banquets at public expenses and the local governments' budgets on banquets should be approved by legislatures, he said.

HOHHOT, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China has invested more than 6.5 billion yuan (959 million U.S. dollars) to preserve grasslands in northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, said the regional government.     The money has been spent on returning grazing land to grassland, restoration of natural grassland and sand source control to prevent sandstorm. The efforts have helped reduce the area of degraded grasslands in Inner Mongolia to 500 million mu (33.5 million hectares) from 700 mu since 2000, it said in a statement.     Since the end of the 1990s, successive droughts, overgrazing and inadequate funding on grassland protection have led to deterioration and desertification of the grasslands in the region.     The region has set the goal of increasing the grasslands' vegetation coverage to 42 percent next year and 48 percent in 2015.     The vast autonomous region, which has a grassland area of 1.3 billion mu, plays a key role in maintaining the country's ecological security, especially in preventing desert threat to Beijing and neighboring Tianjin.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday. Both leaders agreed to start cooperation in new fields of space exploration and high-speed railway construction.     Hu said both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation between China and the United States on the basis of mutual benefits in areas such as anti-terrorism, law enforcement, science and technology, agriculture, health care and civil aviation.     The two leaders also initiated to start cooperation in new areas like space exploration and high-speed railway infrastructure construction, and keep promoting greater development in military relations.     Obama and Hu also discussed to expand cultural exchanges between the two nations, especially youth exchanges, and supported both sides to set up a cultural exchange mechanism and to strengthen cooperation on dispatching more students to each other countries.     Obama is paying a four-day visit to China, his maiden trip to China since taking office in January.
