 BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China hopes to work with the United States to maintain a healthy and stable relationship which benefits the people of both countries and the world, said Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo on Wednesday.     "Sino-U.S. relations are at a crucial point linking the past to the future," Dai told the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte, who was here to honor the 30th anniversary of Sino-U.S. relations.     Dai said China and the U.S. shared common interests and consolidated a strategic foundation. This paved the way for further development of the relationship.     He summarized four achievements in Sino-U.S. relations made during the Bush administration.     --The two countries confirmed the relationship as stakeholders and constructive cooperators.     --The two heads of state maintained frequent contacts.     --High-level strategic dialogues were institutionalized to promote mutual trust and cooperation.     --Cooperation in all areas deepened such as major international and regional issues.     "Sino-U.S. relations have made remarkable progress over the past three decades and this linked the two countries closely," Dai said.     Negroponte said both the U.S. and China were important countries in the world and needed more dialogue and cooperation to safeguard global security and stability.     The strategic dialogue and the strategic and economic dialogue were two effective mechanisms and should be continued, he said.

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao expounded on "The Scientific Outlook on Development" for Bruce Alberts, editor-in-chief of the Science Magazine of the United States on Sept. 30.     In the two-hour exclusive interview at the Zhongnanhai leadership compound, Wen said the first and foremost principle of the concept of scientific development is to put people first, to make every person attain full and harmonious development in an equal and free environment.     He said the comprehensive development came to the second, which means the integration of economic development with social development, the integration of economic reform with political reform, the integration of an opening-up and inclusive approach with independent innovation, and the integration of advanced civilization with traditional Chinese culture.     "Thirdly, we need to resolve the disparities, including rich-poor disparity, regional disparity and urban-rural disparity in our country's developmental process. " He added.     Sustainable development is also an important part of the concept, which aims at meeting the challenges of population, resources, and environmental protection faced by the 1.3 billion Chinese people in the modernization process. He said.     "We want to achieve sustainable development by adopting a resource-conserving and environment-friendly approach."     He also emphasized that these four goals could not be achieved without science and technology or without innovations.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday spoke over telephone with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush about bilateral relations and major international issues of common concern.     The two leaders exchanged congratulations on achievements that have been made in the development of bilateral relations since the forging of diplomatic ties between China and the U.S. 30 years ago.     They expressed the hope that a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations would be successful.     President Hu agreed with Bush's positive remarks on China-U.S. relations and hailed his efforts to develop a constructive and cooperative Sino-U.S. relationship.     In the new historical period of time, China and the United States, through their joint efforts, will surely be able to stay firm in the general direction of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative relationship and promote sound, stable, all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties, Hu noted.     Bush, for his part, said China and the United States have engaged in good cooperation over the past 30 years which deserves congratulation.     The U.S. president said he was pleased that he has conducted satisfactory cooperation with President Hu during his presidency.     On the Middle East situation, Hu said China is seriously concerned about escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and worsening of the volatile situation in the Middle East and is deeply worried about the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Gaza Strip.     China calls on all the parties concerned to stop military operation and armed conflicts, promote the relaxation of tension in the region and create conditions for a solution to the conflict by political means, Hu said.

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday extended sympathy over a Japanese consumer's sickness caused by eating China-made frozen green beans.     "We hope she will recover soon," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a regular press conference when asked to comment on this case.     The Chinese government valued product quality and food safety, and attached great importance to this case, he noted.     According to Japanese media, a woman fell ill after eating the beans produced by a company in Yantai, a coastal city of east China's Shandong Province. The woman experienced numbness in her mouth after eating the beans on Sunday.     Japanese health authorities reportedly said they had detected 6,900 parts per million of organophosphate pesticide dichlorvos in the beans, or 34,500 times the maximum level the government allows for imports. No dichlorvos were found in other packaged beans.     Informed of this case, China immediately contacted with the Japanese embassy to China to size up situation, China's quality inspection authorities immediately went to Yantai to conduct investigation in the company, and local governments also set up a special group to assist the investigation, according to Qin.     Now the investigation is well under way, he noted.     According to the current result of the tests, the company's production facilities were normal, all production records were in order, and no hidden trouble was found in quality or safety, Qin said.     The management of the company conformed to the standards, he noted.     Moreover, this batch of products exported to Japan had passed tests before exportation and no pesticide residue, such as the dichlorvos or methamidophos, was detected.     Qin said the Chinese quality inspection department Wednesday once again tested the retention samples of the exported beans and found no pesticide residues.     He said the Chinese side has reported the initial investigation results to the Japanese side and made arrangement for the officials with the Japanese embassy to visit Yantai on Thursday tofind out relevant situation.     Qin also disclosed some information provided by the Japanese side which said relevant Japanese organization only found residue of dichlorvos in one bag of beans but found no such pesticide residues in other products of the same batch.     He said he has noted that the Japanese police and media recently both believed there is little possibility that the beans were polluted during the producing process, and that the case might not be a food safety incident but a man-made poisoning case.     The Japanese police has placed the case on file for investigation, he added.     He stressed that the Chinese government is ready to keep close contacts and cooperation with the Japanese side to find out the truth as soon as possible.

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese netizens have made their voices heard more loudly and their presence better recognized in headline news events over the past year.     When the Beijing Olympic torch relay overseas was disrupted in April, almost all the Chinese msn messenger users posted "I love China" beside their names, a move that looked "overwhelming" to Kevin, a French man who was living in Shanghai at the time.     As to domestic affairs, netizens did not sit aloof. After the dairy scandal emerged in September, netizens' strong criticisms finally led to the resignation of Li Changjiang, then director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     Yan Jirong, professor at Peking University's School of Government, said this incident showed the government was paying attention to public voices on the Internet.     A report released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Dec. 2 showed about 206 million Chinese use the Internet as their main source of news.     According to the China Internet Network Information Center, under-30s are the majority of online news readers, accounting for about 69 percent of total Internet users.     On June 20, Hu visited the Qiangguo Forum, which is affiliated to people.com.cn, and chatted with netizens. Hu's visit drew so many clicks that it almost crashed the site.     Premier Wen said frankly at a press conference on March 18 that he had been using the Internet to listen to netizens' opinions and suggestions during the annual sessions of the National People's Congress, the top legislature, and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the top advisory body.     Fans of the two leaders started to post suggestions and support to the two leaders at beginning of July on a bulletin board of the people.com.cn, a website of the People's Daily.     It was prompted by affection for Hu and Wen after seeing how they dealt with the May 12 earthquake, the fans said in their postings.     After the magnitude-8.0 earthquake struck the southwestern Sichuan Province and the neighboring provinces on May 12, the two officials paid repeated visits to the devastated areas and impressed netizens with moving behavior and words.     Some scholars said bluntly that the Internet had indeed built a direct link between the grassroots and the central power.     Local officials, on the other hand, are going a step further to write blogs and hold debates with netizens on hot issues.     Li Ou, vice mayor of Siping in the northeastern Jilin Province, has been hailed by netizens as being the most active mayor who uses his real name to debate with netizens on social affairs.     Li's blog was selected as one of the "top 10 blogs of 2008" in a poll by the People's Daily based on the votes from millions of netizens.     Another local official, Liao Xinbo, deputy director of the Department of Public Health of the southern Guangdong Province, was also on the list. LONDON, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday warned against protectionism in face of lingering global financial crisis.     Speaking at a meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Wen said as international financial crisis is spreading, his visit to London was to send a message of confidence for Britain and China to join hands in overcoming current difficulties. Wen's speech at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos has sent a message of confidence in strengthening cooperation and overcoming difficulties.     The former British prime minister noted that Britain supports free trade, and is opposed to protectionism in trade. He will also deliver a speech at the University of Cambridge.     On Saturday, Wen met with Stephen Perry, chairman of 48 Group Club, and the representatives of "Young Icebreakers."     His trip is a return visit for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's China tour early last year, as a regular high-level meeting mechanism set between the two countries.     Britain is the last leg of Wen's week-long European tour, which began Tuesday and has already taken him to Switzerland, Germany, the European Union (EU) headquarters in Brussels and Spain.
